But is this realy better then a 6 year old desktop or low end gaming pc turned into a NAS?
No it is not but I got it for free and an SSD will always be slower than an NVMe. The reason I used this specific machine was 1 because it was free and 2 it had an NVMe, those were my reasons at least.
