I'm 70 years young and this music was the norm in the late 50's, 60's and early 70's. Every friggin day on the radio....and we didn't even know how lucky we were!
It's pretty neat that we get to watch an entirely different generation react to the soundtracks of our lives. Maybe that's our legacy? I hope so.

I dispute that we didn't know what we were watching. I certainly did. The fact that she still effects me the same way today is a testament to her enormous gift. While I love most of the old classics, very few effect me the same as they did when I first heard them. Janis is the exception.
I call those performers Flat Footed Singers that can blow you away. No dancers, no auto tune, no light shows, no over production. Just a song, musicians and a massive soul filled voice. Awesome.

Her last album it was said she was learning really when to tone her vocal back and when to blast it, she was really learning more about her powerful voice. Once in a lifetime talent. Just imagine how many more great sings and performances she had in her? Gone way too soon.
She was destined to be too good is WHY she's gone. The controllers of ALL agendas had to intervene. They don't want us too distracted. She is one of the originals of the 27club.

The Woman saying "Wow!" at the end of the performance is Cass Elliot of the group the Mamas and the Papas ("California Dreaming", etc), who was one of the people who set up the Monterey Pop Music Festival. This was Janis Joplin's introduction to world fame; previously, she was just a singer for the band "Big Brother and the Holding Company" who were backing her in this performance.
Just a poor girl from Lubbock, TX, bullied and overlooked in school, but Janis loved the Blues. She was 24 that day in June 1967. She died from her own self-destructive behavior just 3 years later, in October 1970.

Actually, she was from Port Arthur, Texas, and went to college at UT Austin. I was a student there at the time. She used to perform at Threadgill's, a legendary beer joint in a converted gas station, on Wednesday, which was folk night. I saw her there a couple of times playing her autoharp and singing. She was something different, even then.

Janis knocked us out in the 60's. Another candle in the wind. She used her voice the way Stevie Ray played guitar. They're natural born Aliens. These performances are raw. When I listen to "Work Me Lord", never a dry eye. It's just gut wrenching. Please react to that one. It's so great to see people like you who didn't live through this era, appreciate this poor creature who tore open her soul for us. RIP, dear Janis. ☮️to all.

Her self esteem was so low because she didn’t fit in with the mean and prejudiced set in high school down in Port Arthur, Texas. They treated her like an outcast and in college voted her “ ugliest man on campus”. She never got over it. She was better than all of them. And the world loved her!!
Her biggest influences were Aretha, Bessie Smith, Nina Simone, Tina Turner , Otis Redding and more.
That's so heartbreaking, people can be so stupid and cruel. Janice Joplin was a beautiful soul and so freaking talented. Just watching this performance you can't help but fall a little in love with her.
I hope she can feel the love we all have for her now.

This woman was one of a kind, & sadly missed by everyone who loved & understood her music ❤ 💚 💙 She truly was a gift that was only with us for a short time, but what a glorious time it was!!! Im 20, and when I was a kid my Dad always played her music and I had no idea she wasn’t with us anymore and I was so sad when I figured out I couldn’t see her live. She’s amazing, wish she was still here!

This video is of a second performance at the festival. This unknown singer blew everybody away and they were asked to come back the next day again. Mama Cass's face says it all. You are not alone in your reaction to this song.
They were going to be filmed on Saturday ( when I was there) but the band refused to “ go commercial “ or some such complaint. Janis wasn’t in on the decision and freaked out. She knew Clive Davis was there and a second performance on Sunday was indeed granted.
I was at this show! Yep, I’m an old fart! Janis’ band was called Big Brother and the Holding Company. Everything was blues based back then- that’s why we loved it so much!!!!! Check her out singing Raise your Hand with Tom Jones- the chemistry is off the charts!

She left way too early....... makes the heart cry many, many tears. The pain never seems to fade when you think about Janis Joplin. She lived a painful life and I often wonder if things would have gotten better for her if she had lived longer. She left us her heart thru her songs..... and that's forever! Janis loved Big Mama Mae Thornton like Elvis did who sang Hound Dog and Janis is singing Mama Thornton’s Ball and Chain. They loved them and did justice to this woman who was an iconic blues singer.

I was still mourning him when she died. The worst and best times of my life. She died never knowing the impact she made on the world. RIP Janis. I still love you so much.

One Of The Greatest Female Singer's Ever RIP Little Girl Blue ❤️💔
Just before the end of her life, she went on as a guest with Dick Cavett on his TV talk show and talked about being run out of town as a teenager in Texas, and that she planned to return for her 10 year anniversary. "I'm going home," she told Cavett. Unfortunately for Janis, she did go back and the residents snubbed her ONCE AGAIN. It must have been a bitter pill to swallow for Janis after feeling she had conquered those childhood haunts.
I love her appearances on the Dick Cavett show. He always treated her very respectfully, for instance he knew she was bookish and asked her about what she was reading , and also serious discussions about music.

This was the performance that got her noticed and an immediate record deal. No one had heard anyone or anything like Janis before this. Before this performance, she and her band, at this time, were basically unknown. After this performance, the rest is history lol

It may seem like it was all improvised, but it wasn't. Her performance was carefully rehearsed, with every lick refined and developed over about a year at this point -- including the scat.. She knew what she was doing, and she worked very hard to get it. And wow, she sooo delivers.

That is not over-reacting at all!!! The audience did not know what they were going to get with Janis, because before this music festival she was a relatively unknown singer. This was the performance that catapulted Janis into the big leagues. Big Mama Cass (Elliott) was the woman in the audience who was wowed by this performance. They were all still sitting down because they were probably higher than a kite at the time.
I am extremely lucky, I grew up with the music of the 60’s, and got to see Janis, Jimi, Clapton, BB, you name them, I saw them. I went to concerts every weekend for years, great memories. I am so happy to see this music being appreciated by you and a whole new generation. Great music will never fade away.

Janis was pretty much unknown here, at the Monterey Pop Festival. After this her career took off, big time. So sad, we didn't get to know what her 30 s/40s and beyond years would've been like.

One of my high school coaches went to school with Janis, She was from Port Arthur, Texas next to Beaumont, where George Jones was from. Record exec Clive Davis was there at that festival and he too was blown away and signed her shortly after. She passed away way too young at 27. Same age as Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison.

I’m closing in on 53 years old, and this song was already apart of the regular rotation in my household when I came home from the hospital. All these decades later, when she raises up that egg that is her soul and cracked it open on stage, I am floored.
