She was not an unknown. I had some of her albums before this concert in 1967. This is the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. It was a big deal. This is the concert in which Jimi Hendrix covered Wild Thing, and set his guitar on fire before he smashed it. A beautiful performance! This performance opened the eyes of a lot of people who weren’t to aware of Janis Joplin.

That's my girl🙌👏💯 and I was at this concert, the well known Monterey Jazz Festival, having been raised in this area. This concert introduced Janis as well as Jimi Hendricks and many others to a wider national audience. Jimi lit his guitar on fire at the end of his set even. I saw Janis a few years later at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco the last time she played there. Her energy was wild and untamed and life changing to experience. What a time to be alive when all this great music was bursting on the scene.🎶🎶🎶

No one sounds like Janis. Another tragic death at 27 yrs old in 1970 that took a forger of Rock and Blues music. She was overwhelmed by the number of people at Woodstock and spent the entire day getting ripped before she went on at 2am.

“Cry Baby” studio version. Her opening notes showcase her ability to sing two notes at the same time- known as polyphonic overtone singing- and the song is a banger. At last! You have at last been honestly blown AWAY! Love it! I'm so glad you see her passion! Now, that lady in the sunglasses is Cass Elliot of the Mamas and the Papas. She was at the top of her game, highly respected as one of the Mamas and the Papas and in her solo career. Her singing style could not be more different from Janis', but you can see she is just blown away by Janis and loving it. Unfortunately, Cass died very young, at the height of her career, of a heart attack. Check out the Mamas and the Papas "California Dreamin" and in her solo career, "Words of Love". She was wonderful.

Welcome to Janis world. Another one we lost way to soon from a heroin overdose in 1970. I was twelve then and I remember hearing that Jimi Hendrix died from an overdose and just a month later Janis. I probably made a mental note at that point to don't ever let anyone try to talk me into trying heroin when I got to highschool. These two checking out a month apart shook me up. A year later the lead singer from The Doors was gone but not from heroin. No one really knows to this day but probably alcohol poisoning, he was a raging alcoholic. I know I thought at the time that being a rock star might be hazardous to your health.
During the second half of the sixties and early seventies it seemed that musicians were accidentally offing themselves kinda frequently. I'm just glad that Lennon cleaned up and came out of it very well. From what I understand is that he snorted heroin but never shot up and from what I've been told is that the withdrawal symptoms were not as severe as when shooting up.
I wouldn't know though because I never had any interest in finding out.
    Peace

She took off running then dropped her knees and slid right into Johnny's crotch munching. Then sang I am down on you, Johnny. Great "Fing" show. I worked at Rock Festivals from the West Coast to the East Coast. West Palm Beach Rock Festival where she performed the tune I posted. Rolling Stones closed the Festival. 3 days of awesome music and LSD were passed out all 3 days. 1969

Can I please suggest you listen to Genesis (Firth of Fifth), Yes (Roundabout), Gordon Lightfoot (The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald) and Elton John (Ticking)? No reactor has listened to Ticking, one of the best examples of Elton John's singing and piano playing and Bernie Taupin's storytelling. Genesis and Yes are at the forefront of prog rock, along with Pink Floyd. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is a must-hear. Have fun amongst the hundreds of rabbit holes, many of which are very deep.

Janis was great, at this festival there was a lot of LSD and you can hear it by the way the guitar player is trying to do the intro and got a bit confused, afterthat it was crazy, Janis just took that festival and took it away. She was apporached by Clive Davis, a Columbia record exec after this gig and he wanted to sign her up, well she did in the end and once she had signed the paper she said to him, well Clive let's cement this, we should go to bed. He was dumbfounded but told her would rather keep it platonic.

Buddy, do you know why they're stopping to look at that one lady in the audience at about 4:00? That's Cass Elliott, who is one of the big female stars of the same time, she was a member of a group called The Mamas and Papas, and she's just sitting there mind blown listening to Janis, who apparently was an unknown before this performance. And they switch back to Cass at the end, don't miss that. And she's just saying , WOW.....Cass Elliot was the polar opposite kind of singer from Janis, a silky-voiced harmonizer and soloist, nowhere near a blues singer.

You are handsome so nice to watch but I love your real reaction to Janis more than your looks. Looks falter, talent doesn't. She was incredible. A massive loss.

It has long been held that Janis was the best singer with the worst band ever.

Totally agree full of soul. It seems like everything Jan is saying she put Herol into it. Cry baby has another good performance.
