Janis Joplin, much like Billie Holliday, didn't just sing the blues, she LIVED the blues.

"Summertime" was written in 1935 by George Gershwin for the musical drama "Porgy & Bess." A movie of "Porgy & Bess" was made of it in 1959. Lots of artists have covered "Summertime" but Janis OWNED it. When Janis learned that Bessie Smith was buried in an unmarked grave she made sure a proper monument was put in place. The inscription reads “The Greatest Blues Singer in the World Will Never Stop Singing-Bessie Smith‐1895‐1937.” Remembering the night Janis died, I was 13 at a sleep over with friends when we heard - we cried our eyes out!

"Cry Baby" and "Work Me, Lord" are two other amazing songs by her. She really showcases her vocals in those two as well, along with "Little Girl Blue".
She has too many great ones to really choose from. I just mention the ones that pop in my head first lol Her voice gives me chills every time. I love her raw and natural voice, and she could control her tones, pitches and could hold a note better than MOST "professional" singers since her who had training. I love that Janis has a beautiful voice WITHOUT training. Pure raw talent and pure organic vocals
My personal Top 4 favorites are
    1. Summertime
    2. Cry Baby
    3. Get It While You Can
    4. Tell Mama

When she was a teenager in East Texas she would sneak to Louisiana Black bars clubs to hear Blues. Like Elvis, both Southerners were called N#@$er lover. Her inspiration was Bess Smith, Black Blues singer. When she found out Bessie didn't have a headstone on her grave she bought one. One in a trillion severely missed. No one can top her rasp, grit, hurt, cracks. She was REAL.Summertime is my all time favorite. RIP Miss Janis.

There certainly are some great live performances of songs from Janis Joplin's final album "Pearl". Check out Get It While You Can from Canada 1970, Her live version of Etta James song Tell Mama from Toronto is fire. The Canadian 1970 shows and her live performances on the Dick Cavett show of "Try" and "Move Over" are amazing too. These are from July and August 1970 shortly before she died in October. You mentioned Bessie Smith who was one of Janis Joplin's heroes. Janis helped to purchase a headstone for Bessie Smith's grave shortly before Janis herself passed away. She had heard how Bessie had been buried in an unmarked grave.

It means a lot to me that she was just herself, like she was famous an loved, but was just so down to earth. Like ya know, she was just REAL. I think people resonated to her because she wasn't fake. What you seen of her is who you got. She didn't pretend to be something she wasn't. She was just who she was. I highly respect that

only 2 times in my life did I cry when someone who was well known died: the first was Janis - Im 68yo & I want to remind U of 1969: all we had were LPs, no cameras, no videos, no choice of studio or live but I appreciate the era of music I grew up listening to - I still remember when head phones came out & I got a pair asap - so I listened to Janis thru my headphones with my eyes closed (I wanted no visual distraction) - fyi: the weekend that Janis died there were eight other ppl in that area who also died from a bad batch of H, which to me just made the whole situation over- the-top gut wrenching * I have said all that to let U know that I know Janis digs deep ! there r times I listen to Summertime (I still close my eyes & play studio version) & emotions run deep ! - it's really encouraging to see young ppl getting a taste of the music I grew up listening to - my parents grew up in the 1930s & all they had were radios - my Dad was a musician & introduced me to music of 40s & 50s (which was big band era) & specifically jazz (J.Coltrane to Ella to T.Monk to DukeE ...... the list is long) - I would suggest to U to listen to Summertime, studio version with ur eyes closed & DO NOT STOP the song
