Let's take a closer look at the nostalgia argument between Jimmy and Asmongold surrounding OSRS. Why is it that so many MMO players are turned off by the "nostalgia label"?

Good video, you covered this very well.
Nostalgia gets you to log in for the first time, it doesn't keep you around.

Oldschool Runescape is literally the best game out right now

I think its also because he has so many contradictions about what makes a good game, graphics being the thing he keeps getting stuck on.
He just looks at osrs, think the graphics are terrible, therefore the only reason anyone will possibly play it is nostalgia.
He also misunderstands eoc and what it did to the game, that can be corrected, but for the nostalgia thing, the only way he will change his mind is to seriously play it himself, you cant explain the experience of osrs, you have to experience it yourself.

I’m not sure if Asmongold cares about graphics. I think he said recently that gone are the days where people really care about graphics. And he plays a lot of indie games, not to mention wow (which has pretty bad cartoon graphics).
I think OSRS holds a special place in many people’s hearts. I used to play it as a kid as well. It’s one of a kind. Thanks for engaging with the change and leaving a comment 🙏🏻

Asmongold doesn't care about graphics at all. He regularly says this

nice video, but i wanna add one think I feel alot of these discussion leave out why is there total player count growing (past its own past peak) if there are only returning players that would not really be possible, as a person who started playing wow classic and osrs just very recently (~3 years ago) I had no nostalgia for either, wow didn't really stick past reaching lvl 40 or so, but now I have 6k hours in one of my account in osrs nearing maxing and I don't see the end as I want to do so much more there. So my point being there are many new payers joining the game that never played them and many returning players who played for an hour or two wrote a reddit post about being dry on defender and left. What I've seen is that people call it nostalgic that are not playing it themselves or playing it really casually.
On another note I feel graphics are to blame you don't see people blaming cs2 being popular because nostalgia (its not that different from 1.6 times) and again it is at all time high player count so maybe they are just good games that receive updates?

Really glad you found OSRS and are enjoying your time there. It’s been a LONG time since I played, but there’s something special about the game.
It’s hard to analyze the peaks and valleys for OSRS when it comes to new players. Especially since it was such a huge game when it first came out. I think you’re one of the exceptions to the rules. Speaking with one of my buddies who has been at the top of the charts for years (max everything ha) and has worked with Jagex for some events, he says OSRS struggles to retain BRAND new players. For the most part, Most people are returning or existing. Now how much someone has played in the past is a whole another story.
Thanks for commenting and engaging with my video. I really appreciate that!

I have a friend who had never played RuneScape before in their life, started playing 2 years ago (osrs) and is now almost 2k total level. Its definitely a game that holds its own. There isn't really anything else like it on the market. The same can be said for vanilla wow. Blizzard fans deserve the osrs treatment.

I only play Old School RuneScape because it’s so different than the game. I played back in 2005-eoc.

I think Asmongold is correct about nostalgia, but he never considered pedigree. These games are wildly successful not only because of our memories but also because of the stellar reputations these earlier versions of the games have garnered over the years.
People who have never considered playing WoW/RuneScape have dived in, purely because of others' nostalgia-driven language.

So true! I actually never played WoW until 2024 😂. Planning on making some videos about that as well. Hopefully soonish! Thanks for engaging with the video and leaving a comment :)

The reason why asmon can only associate old games with nostalgia is because his "old" game is wow, which has continually gotten worse over the years. Even combining the playerbase of retail and classic, wow's player numbers has been decreasing year over year. Whereas runescape's has only increased since osrs launched.

Yo that’s a good point! I actually haven’t really played much WoW (working on a 2024 new player video), but yeah that makes sense

Not an MMO player but i feel that nostalgia has something involved.
In general a old game could be a very good game, but in some aspects for today standars could be outdated. Some titles get hurted more than others by the pass of the time and others hold better. But then be have games like Heroes 3 that remain super popular over 20 years and mostly because of the community and the lack of a better new version of the game.
The point Asmon was doing (i think) its that if a MMO identical as OSRS launch today without no one knowing the dev team and not related to anything. It will be not as successful as OSRS is.
And i get the point of Jimmy that OSRS get improved over time and does not remain the same as launch.
But there is a reason why some old games get remake/ reworked like the case of Half-Life and Black Mesa, the base idea and the story could be great but i really doubt a new generation will play the old Half-Life in great numbers.

Hey! Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment 😎
100% agree. Asmongold is right, in that nostalgia drives people to return to games. And if Jimmy is truly saying nostalgia has no part in it, I don’t think that’s a fair statement. It definitely plays a part. But it’s not enough to keep people for months or even years at a time, scientifically nostalgia doesn’t work like that. There are Plenty of remakes that people pick up and drop within a week. So there is something special about OSRS that Jimmy has grabbed on to and for him, the game is so much more than “just nostalgia”.
      In a way, they’re both right?? 😂

That's what Jimmy's whole video was about. The game has changed so much that nostalgia brings players back, but the new and interesting content being added gets them hooked.@@Z-MACx

    • @Z-MACx
      @Z-MACx  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@cadengordon188 no yeah i get that. but saying "There's nothing nostalgic about old school RuneScape it's not even close to the same game " is a little different. If you're only looking at a veteran/endgame player perspective, this is probably the case. because you just keep completing all thew new content. but when you look at the game as a whole, the new character experience seems to be very nostalgic. from what ive seen of new player speedruns, they're virtually the same across the board. and the core graphics, most of the skilling, combat mechanics, etc are unchanged. i think Jimmy would admit that OSRS is nostalgic for many people, but the long-term players dont need nostalgia because for them, its a whole new game
anyways, thanks for commenting and engaging with the video. i appreciate it!

Thanks for adding that. I feel like the brand new players that enjoy OSRS are quick to speak up, but the ones that don’t enjoy it keep quiet. It’s important for people to hear both sides. And according to data, you’re in the majority.
