Good luck with this job it looks awesome!👍
Lovely words

God thats brilliant that your Dads still working bless him, Whats his name mate and yours, Now is your time and I am here to help, Johnyboy

Annoy everyone but stay happy mate , good vibes

Makes me want to do mine myself. But i wont lol. Great job you make it look easy 👍
You can do it mate

@@GreentopLandscapes Hi mate it’s Tony again, sorry to bother you , could you recommend a place to hire a ruby wet table saw pls?
Hi Tony

FYI DIYers banging in a metal spike into the ground can be extremely dangerous especially if you dont know if their is a main electrical cable or main gas line. Yes it can be obvious but in some cases hitting a hidden gas line or electrical cable with a metal spike can and will kill you and hitting a gas line can again cause major damage. The easy answer is use wooden stakes. Watch D&J Projects as this scenario actually happend to Taff.
Cheers Buddy
Cracking video mate watch from start to finish very detailed buddy. Get yourself some long handles fiskars transfer shovels great bit of kit. Your spot with them spacer twist 1,s no good. Pick axe wide blade mattock type way forward. Cracking job going on any lad that’s interested should be taking the opportunity to do a week with you for sure. 👍🏻

No option of removing a fence panel to get a digger in and material in and out then?
great job, love your comments at the end. Have a great weekend
Thanks, you too!
Love your advise used on couple jobs worked well for me, thanks pal
Thanks Paul mate
quality as always mate, much better video structure too!
Much appreciated!
Great video John. Full of energy mate and that porcelain looks beautiful.
Thank you kindly

Great and high quality work jhon always 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
Thanks again!
i'm planning on laying porcelain tiles in my garden..been watching your videos, building up my knowledge so keep your vids going..oh would really want to hear your advise on laying porcelain on existing concrete and maybe a more detailed video speciifcally on string lines - Thanks!
Cool, thanks, Bal have an exterior adhesive for large format tiles on Concrete
God, job, lads, but where are the second parts of the video? How was the garden finished .
Your attention to detail is excellent 👍
Thank you Sir
Totally agree about the self levelling. I’ve always had a massive doubt about them. even the slightest raise of a slab could potentially lift it from the mortar bed leaving only water/air in there.
I totally agree, many dont see it
@@GreentopLandscapes Great videos by the way. Long time follower.
Awesome video once again. Lots of hard work there and appreciated that a video was made!

@@GreentopLandscapes I will mate. Need it done and dusted by August as its my daughters 18th and we having it in the garden. Going for the charcoal iroboard again after watching you for best part of 2 years x
Make people smile through every day. It costs nothing and stay happy. Ps what block sealer would you recommend for the block drives
Absolutely
Thanks for the video! A landscaper is recommending to me that we dry lay 2cm porcelain like this over compacted gravel (same as concete slabs), thoughts? His reasoning is if water gets in between or under the tiles and freezes, it can disrupt them. I'm a bit apprehensive of this approach due to potential movement. We do live in Switzerland and get colder winters than UK.
Mark this topic is so big, I have spoken to Bal Adhesives many times about this and companies in Canada, the easiest thing is to talk to you more than happy to set up a Zoom call if you want?

Simply the best 👍🏻👌

Great content as usual. Those steps must be a killer!
Thanks Jack, no the steps were fine
Nice video John but watch the levels. Should be laying upto 150mm below DPC? Given that there's no designed drainage it would be helpful to cover falls away from the building (1:80 to1:60?) - looks like you have some standing water? otherwise thumbs up from me and you come across on camera really well.
The British standard is 1:60 for porcelain but it just looks stupid, I see your point about standing water but ist not its called water Tension, its something you can not avoid with Porcelain, thanks for the thumbs up.
Oh yes you can go one below damp in domestic situations and of course as long as you dont bridge the damp course thats fine as well.
Building Regs require DPC 150mm above finished ground. A competent Surveyor will pick this up on a House Buyers Survey.
So how do they deal with wheel chair access, look at the paving expert on is domestic situation rule,
@@GreentopLandscapes I mentioned the DPC point as its something I frequently come across as a Surveyor and your videos provide some really great advice. You mentioned the Paving Expert.com who covers these points better than I could in this message. Alternative 'dry area' arrangements, drained channels and linear drains are all options where costs or client preference means the '150mm below DPC' cant be maintained. Where disabled access is concerned some tolerance will be applied by Building Control providing the 'breech' is limited to the width of a door opening and a drainage solution can be applied (see Part M Building Regulations). Alternatively, if a client is insistent on a 'level threshold' / paving an injected DPC or water proof render / tanking may provide a solution?
Ultimately, I would go back to the Paving Expert's comments where the Property Owner should be made aware of the potential consequences and consent to any breach in order to safe guard come back on the Contractor.
I hope you are Ok with me raising this point, I found this video very informative and very much appreciate the time you have taken make these videos for us - Im looking forward to watching the 'Massive Garden Patio Fail' as some small relief from my own Clients problems
i am new to your channel glad I found it,good tips pity you got rid of slabs they could have been used again
Cheers John
Do you have to use SBR? I recently had my patio done and I didn't notice the builder putting SBR on the Indian sandstone slabs. I'm not sure if he put it in the mix. Several slabs are loose although at the time it was freezing conditions so they might have not bonded from that. I just hope he comes out to fix it. He used a lot of compo leftover from another job. It's good to see tradesmen like you take care in their work.
Thank you so much I hope you get it sorted
another great video John!
Thanks again! Darren mate
Loved this vid learnt alot
Glad to hear it!
Love the job but disappointed the sandstone pavers weren't recycled (given away) for reuse.
I try to recycle all the time but sometimes they are just not wanted
Good work. But I always wonder how slippery those tiles get when it rains. Looks dangerous. 😬
No mate R11 rating does look slippery

I really enjoyed this longer video. Thanks. 😀
Good point lmao great stuff Ian
Hi mate,
Just found your channel and I’m really enjoying the content, I’ve also subscribed. Nicky Wire from the Manic Street Preachers lives next door to the little cafe up road where you went for an ice cream!
Well Thank you
This is definitely one of the best videos I've seen. What kind of grout did you use to fill the gaps? Another question: For cement slurry, can I just mix water and dry cement to back butter tiles?
thanks mate, give me a ring
Do you wack the fill soil down as you go?
Cracking video, I was wondering if you can use tanking slurry on the back of porcelain tiles to lay outside on a cement mortar base? Cheers Steve
Yes, absolutely
Top video as usual !!!
Can I ask what would happen if you didn’t slurry the slabs before laying?
They could lift up delaminating is an often occurring factor and it’s a British Standard now to slurry buddy
Really enjoy your videos Johnny, Facebook group is a great data source too mate 👍🏻
Thanks John, are you on the group?
@@GreentopLandscapes Aye Johnny I am so
Why would you not put a 150mm stone drainage trim in I don't get that it makes the patio bigger stops the mould building up I always do it....
Hi Todd 150mm seems a bit wide
Is this method good enough for minus degrees during winter ?
`For sure
great job , but to me you should have a minimum depth of 150mm below damp.
Thanks buddy
Last I layed of those they all had a slight belly making the middles higher than both edges (length ways,)
Absolutely hated them never touching them again and the primer is long lol
I have had that, its a good point
What do you do in that situation? Ignore the centre and go with the edges?
Hello there
Just so i know the method, please can you share why you laid membrane under this one ?
I just felt the ground needed a stabilising fabric
Question about your diluted SBR put down on lean top before you laid mortar and tile. Did you have to lay over the top in a specific time period or was it just seal it and then its fine to lay over top over a few days?
That’s a good point but SBR is a latex to it will create some bonding qualities, thanks for your feedback
Have you ever seen porcelain laid on a 1 in 200 fall? We have a patio laid like this and are not happy. Might be looking to get it redone if you're interested...
Hi there we have never seen this, where do you live?
Hi, I really enjoy watching your videos, I'm trying to get as much info as I can before I do my own porcelain patio, can you tell me how thick is your lean mix you put on the sub base. Thanks
Give us a call
My Garden slopes toward my house. Would that mean I ensure my porcelain tiles slope toward my house? And ensure I have adequate drainage
Any patio can run towards the house as long as you accommodate the surface water 💦
Hi
Great videos.
I need a bit of advice. Starting a new porch next month. Want to have a go at outside tiles. Can I lay a concrete slab down as a sub baseand then do a sand cement mix for tiles,
Yes, absolutely hy dont you give me a call Roop mate
Great vlog.
When you lay the porcelain on bed to make sure the bed is full before priming did you tap it down to where you want it then lift it for priming or do you tap it down into place after priming.
Cheers
Hi Garyy mate, thanks for watching, in answer to your question yes I did mate.
That's a nightmare those steps 😂can't beat a bit hard work
lol
Hi are you happy to leave a 6" concrete slab under part of our patio once you SBR it . Thanks.
As long as its not compromised Kurt mate
Would you bed them on well compacted sub base … no lean mix???
Yes that works I just prefer a leanmix
Should have come to arrangement with the client to remove a fence panel and reinstate at the end with temporary timber panel for daily access. Seems nuts unless there is no possibility to access .
It was about a 4m drop both sides
Hi Jonnyboy, please could you advise the colour of porcelain and where to get it from. I’d really like to have the same for our project. Thanks.
Hi John the client got this from Cardiff Slate and Stone
Great work and video mate!
We don’t have such a great selection of good products in Australia for priming slurry. I’ve been told tile adhesive can be used like kerakoll H40, have you used it or in your experience would it work?
@@scottharris5239 let’s talk mate
I don’t understand why you can get so close to the DPC level without worrying about it at all. I’m having my patio redone as we speak and the contractor is insisting we leave a 10-15cm gap despite having soffits and only one storey of house to worry about rain water running down for most of the length of the patio.
you can get damp transfer into your damp course
From a small landscaping business point of view I've got to say your videos on laying patios are brilliant!! HOWEVER you keep mentioning this "turn of the bubble" 30mm im 1000 or 3mm in 100.... Im very hasty on taking this advice even though you said its a BS.
Ive put a fair few patios down myself, I work to the rule of "back of the bubble' not rocket science, set your fall to the line of the bubble. this equates to ROUGHLY 10mm over 1800. Now im not saying you're wrong in any way. but I've put hose pipe simulated heavy rain over every slab ive laid and the run off has been sufficient.
Great feed back Marc mate I always say turn of a bubble or 10mm in a meter Some times its slip of the tongue bud so sorry, be safe bud and keep up the good work.
how have you applied the sbr to the sub base to stop drying out the bed of mortar?
Yes
Fantastic video, such a great guy, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
John is a natural in front of the camera and seems like the decent honest landscaper that we all want to employ!
I'm a complete novice but will have a go now after watching this.
one question... what is the ratio for the lean mix that goes on top of the hard core sub base?
Such kind words Del mate thank you, Leanmix 12-1 is good but moist some concrete companies do it but give them a call on their spec, be safe brother.
@@GreentopLandscapes I will do. Thanks again.
Keep up the great work and inspiring videos 👍
Thanks Del mate
Would you have a preference for 60x60 tiles or 90x30?
Hi Kev mate it just depends on clients requirements

What you reckon to the easy click base mate? Had the reps out, really good man and woman. If it’s legit it would save some right work.
Lol it would save some work be good if you could just edit that word buddy as some kids read the comments with respect but I think your right it will save a huge amount of work and cost to the environment, i seen in installed in Cambridge an Ipswich and Porcelain was used there and I am told it still looks good. Be safe buddy
@@GreentopLandscapes haha done mate 👍🏼 definitely especially on the terrible access jobs, which seem like they all are to me. I’m going to give it a try on my next one.
Good man
What would you do differently if you had to use 10mm tiles? TIA
Full concrete and steal
@@GreentopLandscapes thanks for replying. How would the steel be used?
In the concrete 10mm is so thin so you need to lay on concrete with an exterior adhesive but a wet pour needs steak or fibre or it will crack
Do you put SBR and a plasticiser in the 5-1 mix? If so how much of each? I currently just slurry the slabs with my own SBR and cement mix. Cheers
Well I do some times but sandstone can be a problem
Hi
How thick do you recommend to put the sub base for porcelain tiles?
To much to type Lee happy to talk
Hi, great video - i am attempting to do this myself at our new house
i have a couple of questions - after you have whacked the sub base down, you put a lean mix over the top and whack that down - what is the lean mix? Cement & Sand?
Can you call me? It’s All in sand and chipping Ls the same for concrete
Very nice, what colour would you recommend for a sandstone brick house? it's black old weathered pitched anstone

Hi Johnny Boy. Top work mate. Assuming no lean mix is used and the bedding is applied directly on sub base MOT, would you use any product to seal the MOT? I may eventually decide to use a lean mix, if I do what is the ratio of bond to water pls? Thank you.
hi Bud a few things on the market Bal do a good one and its made with a lot of research.
Great video. How much sbr and plasticiser do you put in your cement mix. Thanks
Thanks Mate, about a Mug full
When digging for the depth for flagging if the ground is clay would you suggest to dig deeper 100mm + for MOT?
Yes for sure Bethan
@@GreentopLandscapes okay thanks and I’m guessing just keep going until the clay thins out or would you dig down to a certain depth also great vids watching them all really good content 💪🏻
Hi mate when you say you put a lean mix over your hardcore, to top it of what rasio sand to cement thanks
Hi Bud About 15 to 1 that’s not just sand that’s ballast
😂😂😂 not just once but twice 😆😆😆
Would it ever be ok to lay a patio with a fall towards the house? I'm planning on doing mine but trying to figure out drainage.
Why not, as long as you can dispose of the surface water
@GreentopLandscapes if you say it should be OK that's all I need 😁 about 5m wide along back of house which I was thinking of using an aco system into the gutter pipe
Perfectly
Hi Johnny great video as normal, can I ask what's the thinnest you can use for the lean mix please. Got at least a two foot MOT base compacted real good didn't know about a lean mix so might add one of got the space for it
