Yawl has a main mast with a small mizzen stepped well aft. The mizzen sail is mainly to help with trimming the boat. A ketch is similar but the mizen is bigger, a bit further forward, and is a proper "driving" sail.
The sail plan is obvious, I think Tim want to know the purpose of the yawl rig. A Yawl rig allows the main mast to be far forward and often unsupported by stays, leaving the center of the boat clear. The position of the mast places the centre of effort far forward so the sail on the rear mast balances the boat.
