I miss the SNES vs Genesis era. Each system had their own technological limitations and thus, the games had their own style/identity. You can immediately tell what system a game is for just by seeing the graphics and hearing the sound.

@@dennismolina9033 While I was also a nineties teen, I do think that the console war of ps3 vs. xbox 360 was on the same page. From over charging at launch, to each system having it's own hardware failures and features, even the exclusive franchise title wars. Also, the sega vs nintendo war was over when the n64 was released. It became nintendo vs sony. Sega Saturn was a massive flop world wide. And dreamcast was late to the party at that point.

Joe Montana's Football ranks as the best video game football game of all-time for me. I used to play this and Joe Montana II: Sport's Talk Football so much back when the Genesis was in its prime. Well, that's just become a yearly cash grab designed to force you into buying the new one when it comes out.

@JCChaconJr you’ll get no arguments from me because you’re spot on. The shame of everything is EA let their sports franchises get stale as well. With the 2k5 games being such high quality at such a great price point it was the best competition EA would ever face and all the sports games were better for it. Would’ve loved to see where that went in the future. Losing the NFL license killed them because at least in the US the NFL game most likely was Sega’s best selling sports game

13:30 Greatest Heavyweights is my favorite boxing game ever. Me and my brother would have hours long tournaments with our cousin and uncle. Magical times. The balance in the game is awesome. We’d have matchups like Marciano versus Holmes, in which you’d think Holmes would wreck because of his reach, but the game compensated for this by giving short-armed fighters like Marciano immense power. You could pick anyone and have a chance if you used your head. And the fights, between fairly evenly matched players, would go deep into the championship rounds. Great game.

Back in the 8-bit and 16-bit days, sports games were an important part of a gaming library, in my opinion. I had lots of fun with Bases Loaded and Baseball Stars on the NES, Walter Payton Football and Reggie Jackson Baseball on Master System, and Joe Montana Football and EA's NHL games on Genesis. Sports games were good to have when you were in the mood to play some video games, but not necessarily something specific or something that would require more time or focus. The Genesis was a great platform for that. I wasn't hugely into sports games, but my brother was. I did, however, get NBA Live '95 myself. But I remember trying to prevent my brother from getting EA's NHL '95, I believe it was, and get Sega's NHL All Star Hockey instead. I knew maybe three people who already had NHL '95, and in every case it was a glitchy mess. My brother ended up getting it anyway -- he had to get it every year for a while -- and he ended up with lots of glitches too. They definitely did not play test that game much.

@@Old_Man_Jay The Mega Drive was actually behind in Japan. The Famicom and the PC Engine were both bigger there, and Super Famicom overshadowed it as well. And it wasn't SEGA of America that screwed the company, it was Japanese pride and conceit. It really is good for them that sepuku isn't a thing anymore or SEGA would have become extinct instead of just becoming a 3rd party software developer. SoJ basically resisted any good idea proposed by SoA. The 32X was originally going to be an actual full on console, but SoA leader suggested making it an add-on. So it was only a $150 failure instead of a $300 failure right before the $400 failure that was Saturn. SoA also wanted to go with Silicon Graphics for their Next Gen platform. SoJ played around with the idea for a while wasting time for everyone, then made the POS 3D saturn architecture. Nintendo slid in and partnered with SGI and the N64 was born. TRUE, Bernie Stolar did mess up the longevity and variety of games for Saturn (and dreamcast) in America. For Dreamcast, SoJ also jacked around with development. They wasted time and resources having SoA develop a competing platform (3Dfx based hardware codenamed 'Black Belt' ) before "deciding" to go with the all Japanese based 'Katana' design. So SEGA contributed to screwing 3Dfx over and driving them out of business. We might have had a competitive 3 company graphics card industry with fair prices but for SEGA of Japan

For me, the Genesis was hands down "THE" Sports console... I kept myself busy with Tommy Lasorda Baseball after launch when Altered Beast quickly got a little boring as an arcade port... WCS wasn't too bad for its time either... It's just one of those games that you can re-analyze after so many years.
You can definitely say that EA Sports had its Golden Age during this era... Madden and Madden '92? Gold. Lakers vs. Celtics and it's follow-up Bulls vs. Lakers (and the NBA Playoffs) each kept me entertained for months! I had such a good experience with those games that when NHL Hockey came out, I bought it the week it came out. Even renting the PGA Golf games they released were pretty solid and entertaining, IMHO. The sports games of that era were immersive (at least as much as they needed to be), and yet still simple enough to play. With the advent of technology (and more buttons on the controllers), at some point, most Sports games just became too difficult to play competitively in the years that followed... That's not to say of the "roster update" (and shut down the online servers right after the season ends) mentality that most sports games have adopted these days - that's why most have list their lustre over the years. The only one that keeps me coming back is the Show franchise, but that's because I've always been a huge baseball fan.

I liked a lot of these games , but one in particular that probably won’t be mentioned as much is “David Robinson’s Supreme Court”. I liked it so much and played it enough that I remember my favorite fake player. I can’t remember which fake team he was on , but his name was Walter Bond and he’s was a guard with a bald head .... I shot a lot of 3 pointers with him.
Montana 94 was the best football game , I remember renting 95 from blockbuster and feeling very confused and ripped off.
Getting 94 for the first time was one of my fondest memories of being excited to get a specific game. The commercials looked great.

Great video. You said what we all been thinkin for over 15 years. Why did Sega keep coming out with new videogame systems (32x, Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast) with no new entries from their most popular game franchises (Streets of Rage, Ecco, Sonic, Altered Beast, Phantasy Star, Toejam & Earl, Golden Axe, Sega Sports, etc.)?!!!!
This is the main reason, all of their systems failed and how they lost their elite place in the videogame market. Smh 🤦🏽‍♂️

Love the rant. The Saturn featured none of these things at launch: Sonic, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Ecco, Toejam+Earl, Golden Axe or any decent sports games. Why were EA not courted properly to make games for launch? Instead the company obsessed about a bunch of arcade games (Virtua Fighter 1/Remix/2, Virtua Cop, Daytona, Sega Rally) during 1995 when they weren’t that big a deal in the West

Because the sega saturn's hardware was based off of the am-g 2 arcade hardware that ran all of their arcade games at the time. So I guess their idea of what people wanted for a brand new system wasn't tried and true franchise titles, but brand new arcade games that no one really cared about at the time. I remember only enjoying virtua cop on pc, like 3 years after it came out, and I never liked virtua fighter. I had tekken for that. It was a bad time for sega fans after 95.

Awesome video, especially from an Australian perspective. The Sega Sports titles were not as big here (especially Joe Montana, because American football is quite niche in Australia), but as the Master System was a big hit Sega were able to parlay that into Mega Drive success. I do have one quibble - which is rare for your videos - Mediagenic, mentioned as failing to develop the engine for Joe Montana Football, actually was Activision. They ill-advisedly rebranded themselves in the late '80s/early '90s. It wasn't until about 1993 that they fully re-established the Activision brand, around when Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure was first announced alongside River Raid and Kaboom remakes.

I never saw a lot of these games before now so I'm grateful to finally know what they look and play like. But yeah, Tommy Lasorda Baseball looks way better to me than the Sports Talk game that looks like it came from the NES. This video also put the nail in the coffin for Joe Montana Sports Talk games for me. If I want side-scrolling football I'll play Tecmo Bowl. I like the John Madden games on Genesis because the graphics were great (especially the throw cams). I also really liked the music.
