What a fitting tribute to a video game Icon, Madden clearly revolutionized sports games, the same Madden Engine was adapted for the Fifa International Soccer franchise as well, which was obviously more popular in Europe. He did a great service for sports video games on top of all his other many achievements, the man shall always be a legend, may he RIP.
The first two Madden games on the Genesis are all I need. Love the music in the first game and would really enjoy hearing a well done arrangement of those tunes with real 'lectric geetars. That ambulance in the 2nd game was just hilarious, causing more more damage than the injured player had sustained... well not really but I just loved the absurdity of it all. I think the first few games have my favorite field graphics as well. Some of the later games had more detailed grass but the perspective seemed off. I would play so much of this and Lakers vs Celtics when they both came out. EA seemed like a brand new titan on the console and they really elevated the Genesis.
Hut....Hut Hut Hut.....Hut Hut Hut Hut. Hut....Hut Hut Hut.....Hut Hut Hut Hut. The original Madden and NHL Hockey music are some of my favourites on the system. I'll play those versions just to hear them.
Very much so, you'd grab the latest EA game pretty much knowing you were gonna get something different. Something you'd not experienced on a console before. As they were more the type of titles you'd get on a PC or Amiga. It didn't always work. Dark Castle and Budokan being a couple of games I ended up trading quite quickly.
This game actually made American Football popular here in the UK again. I'm pretty sure of that. I remember the first game coming out. I got it on release here and it was from this game me and my friends worked out the rules of the game. It was a huge hit here in the UK. Because it was a good game. Wasn't about the sport, or the licences or anything else other than the fact it played wonderfully. We all fell in love with it. I have so many great memories of sitting in my best friends bedroom, playing 2 player games for hours.
Man thanks for putting this video together. It brought back a lot of memories. My uncle and I used to play this game and Lakers vs Celtics for hours. The graphics at that time were incredible considering the best football games prior to this was Tecmo and Super Tecmo Bowl on NES. Heck , people complain about Madden now but they don't have a clue about what some of us had to go through when it comes to gaming. I'm old enough to remember playing 10 Yard Fight on NES and I promise you that was rough
I am definitely not a sports fan or someone who plays sports games, and I admit, when I was younger, I was one of those gamers who thumbed their noses at these games, but as I've grown up and learned to expand to accept more viewpoints, I realize this series is as important to many people as games like Megaman and Final Fantasy are to me, and regardless of what this game series is now, I still have to respect these classic games and their legacy for gaming as a whole. Rest in Peace, John Madden. Your name to millions is now synonymous with the sport you loved.
Not even a football fan and only own a single football video game, Madden NFL '94 on Sega Genesis, but I click on this video just because I like this channel.
@@PaperBanjo64 Nice. I think it's at the sweet spot of having football depth and realism but also the colorful, chunky, chaotic fun playability of early Madden games. College Football USA 96 and 97 are better "simulations" of football, but a bit of the fun factor is lost, and so if you are not that into football to begin with, Madden 94 is probably perfect.
We sooooooo looked forward to Madden coming out every year!! reading about it in magazines just to see what changes and additions they made we couldn't wait to play it.
I noticed that too! hahaha Anyway, I'm sure the reasoning behind it is that it's a 16-bit game and had limited data programmed into it. If I recall, the only "penalty" that was programmed into the first couple of Madden games was defensive offsides or encroachment. I don't remember any other penalties being in the game besides Defensive Offside.
This comment just shows me how much I lack in football knowledge. Love the sport, but it's not what I grew up with as a Latino, so stuff like this goes completely over my head.

It's such a shame that today's modern Madden games are such an insult to John Madden, being more about nickle and diming it's loyal playerbase, rather than offering the fun of being the best football simulation on the gaming market...
The same can be said for almost all other sports games after around 2005. They just seem to have the IT factor lost along the way. With the limitations of the 16 bit machines hardware, 90-98 console sports games have never been rivaled on the Genesis & Super Nintendo.

RIP John Madden. He taught so many of us the game and did so around our families as he almost felt like an extended member. The first few Maddens were huge in the UK too. Everyone knew about them and you saw copies everywhere. The magazines hyped them up as being some of the best games on the Mega Drive (check out Mean Machines, Issues 3 and 15). It's impressive how much of an impact Madden made to a nation that didn't even know the rules of the sport. A lot of us learned the rules just because of that game (I've heard RMC mention this too). Great vid, but was waiting for the snow!
Yeah, the first Madden was my introduction to the sport. It landed about the same time the first NFL games were being broadcast on UK television (Channel 4, very late at night!). The instruction manual for John Madden basically helped me understand what I was watching on TV.
Brings back the golden era for Sega!! I will never forget seeing Madden football for the first time! Me and Brother in law both had the Genesis. One day while over at his house and hanging with him and my nephews, we fired up Madden. He said" you gotta see this! " he described an ambulance that comes out on the field. So we played it a bit, I of course sucked at aports games. Lol wasn't long before a player got hurt then we heard the wrrrrrrrrrrr! And the ambulance plowing everyone over to get to the injured player!! We laughed our asses off! He being more of a sports player really liked Madden. This was an exciting time! So many new games and experiences!
Yeah the ambulance on the field was awesome, and this was back when NHL used to have the blood come out of the player's heads. And you could engage in all the late hits you wanted
We were able to preorder and purchase Madden 93 Championship Edition at our local BRE Software store. All my buddies and I picked it up and it became our go to tournament game. To this day, it is still my favorite football game. Just so fun to play. I didn’t realize it was limited and is a rare game these days. I guess I got lucky.
The best part of these games when first released was how it expanded my video gaming friend group. A whole new set of friends were excited to play games for hours, people that weren't interested at all in the NES, C64 or games in general just a couple years before. That was cool.
I find it funny that Steve Young was throwing right handed for so many years in a row. It can't be an oversight; there must've been some technical limitation. My idiot brain just says reverse the sprite, but I don't know the first thing about making video games.
It's a shame what EA has turned the once great Madden franchise into. Madden truly elevated football and video game football will never be the same because of him. It's truly insulting to have a series as once exalted and highly regarded fall so bad.
It just made me shed a tear in my eyes, well Madden what a great coach and commentator and also great video games. Just like what Chuck Taylor did for Converse! I am glad you did a video about Madden. It is awesome! God rest his soul.
Thank you for covering classic sports game. I feel like they dont get enough love. Sure they were primitive but paved the way for modern games. My favorite classic sports games: Head on Soccer - NES Super High Impact - Sega Genesis Joe Montana Football - Sega Genesis Tecmo Super Bowl - NES NBA Jam - SNES
Tecmo Superbowl is still the best game from that era. It was the first console game to have injuries, substitutions and a full season with playoffs and a Superbowl. The thing I liked about Madden is they just improved upon some of those things. I used to love the ambulance that would come on the field and run over everyone lol. I also remember if you did a sweep play and got behind the defense all you had to do was spam the high step button and they couldn't stop you.
Madden '96 was my favorite. I played that one so much, and I loved how at the team select screen (before I was able to search the internet for cheats and stuff) you press a sequential number of buttons and you get secret teams eg. Bengals '81, Cowboys '77.
@@SegaLordX As a guy who has every Madden on the Genesis minus the championship 93 edition, I concur. I also loved the FOX NFL touch to ‘96 adding just that little more.
Was it 95 or 96 that had the combine when you created a player?? You had to do the 40 to determine the speed, QB drills if it was a QB etc. That was all calculated into the final rating. I made a Vick like QB before there was Michael Vick lol
RIP John Madden. Football and the world misses you. This was a nice change. I personally only started picking up Madden games within the last year. I picked up Madden 13 for the Wii U for the Game Pad features. I picked up Madden 97 and 98 for the Sega Saturn for some fun football games for the system, and most recently I picked up Madden for the 3DO. I have been collecting the more obscure and lower print run versions of Madden. I would love to find a copy of that Championship version but the main game I am trying to find now is John Madden Duo Cd Football. Knowing I could play Madden on the Turbo Duo just fascinates me. Hoping I can find a copy some day.
Great video and tribute. I loved listening to Pat Summerall and John Madden on Sunday during a game. No one can even come close to them. R.I.P. to them both. Remember, you are not promised tomorrow, so tell the people you love today ✌🏼
NFL Football '94 is what I played from 94 until 2000 which was when I got a PlayStation and completely stopped playing Football games until last year. I still play 94 every once in a while, it's so much fun... I do play Madden 21 now more regularly on the PS4, really enjoy that one.
It was pretty groundbreaking for the time, the instant replay and camera angles were amazing for the time. But I could only score if I played with Buffalo and ran tosses to Thurman Thomas or across to my tight end.
Ooh… I’d really like to see a video on some of the other American Football games on Genesis, such as the Joe Montana series, NFL Quarterback Club (inc the 32X version), Tecmo Super Bowl, Mutant League Football and any more obscure ones I may have missed.
I was a huge sports gamer especially with the Sega Genesis and regular Nintendo I played tecmo super bowl mostly all the way up until I first got my John Madden game in 1993and I played that ever since such a good great games I couldn’t put the thing down👍😎
I even have the gold championship Sega Genesis version too. Just plain fun. I only have the cartridge. But it’s an original. It wasn’t super expensive when I got it. $40. Games back in 93 were that much or more 👍
@@bonesjackson81 Yeah I didn't want to be the one that said it but the series has taken a real hit as of late especially. What EA has turned the once great Madden series into is absolutely appalling. Especially now what a slap to the face and an insult to the man's name.
I haven't played a Madden NFL game since the Genesis days. I remember how awesome they were considering I'm from the UK and we aren't that much into NFL. I have never played anything since Genesis and what I've seen of the games now between PS3 and PS4, they went the FIFA way and just same old, same old. Instead of taking advantage of the current hardware and trying to make massive improvements in gameplay and other things they just profit, profit, profit. RIP to the legend that is John Madden
Madden '93 was a big part of my Genesis experience as a kid. I don't think I played past '95. Hell, I think the last football game I played was NFL 2k on Dreamcast when it was new(great game as well).
Although my heart bleeds Silver and Black, I've got nothing but respect for them 49ers. In fact I'd be remiss to not admit I was a Tom Rathman fan. What a beast of a player #44 was. Great video SLX! You bring honor to the series, and to the legend. First class all the way. 👍
I am really excited to watch this episode, Madden Football was the #1 game in the UK Magazine "Mega" for the Mega Drive in their top 100 games. I absolutely used to wait impatiently for the next Madden every year as a teenager for the Sega Genesis (which looked and played very different on the SNES), my 2 favourites are Madden 94 for the overall presentation, graphics and playability but Madden 95 is a close second because it has the windowless passing and the 2 point converts. Madden 97 on the Sega Saturn and Madden 2000 on the Playstation are also excellent Madden games (Ironically, I think Bill Walsh 95 is the ultimate football game for the Genesis as it combines the best from Madden 94 and Madden 95). We don't say "we want to play football video game, we say let's play some Madden!"

And you could engage in all the late hits you wanted
excellent content. maybe your best upload yet
RIP John Madden he was really Big influence of Madden Games back great 90s
John madden 1992 Is a legendary game.and my favorite in the John madden 🏈 football.make me miss the 1990s.word up son
The first madden on genesis has me playing madden ever since. I loved how they would show you the end of other games lol
The best part of these games when first released was how it expanded my video gaming friend group. A whole new set of friends were excited to play games for hours, people that weren't interested at all in the NES, C64 or games in general just a couple years before. That was cool.
Yup. I made multiple new friends from these games in school. People I’d never have talked to otherwise.
worth it for the Madden commentary alone
I find it funny that Steve Young was throwing right handed for so many years in a row. It can't be an oversight; there must've been some technical limitation. My idiot brain just says reverse the sprite, but I don't know the first thing about making video games.
Great edit. Great tribute! Excellent work
That Madden intro is a step back into my childhood memory
Got my hands on this game when it came out me my family and friend would play until the late hours of night and still when to work the day
Madden 96 was my favorite of the 16 bit era.
This was a legit video for all sega and/or NFL fans
RIP Madden... actually fuck that... you will live forever...
94 was my first year. will never forget.
so much time I spent playing this game!!! It was a blast.
Thank you for covering classic sports game. I feel like they dont get enough love. Sure they were primitive but paved the way for modern games.
My favorite classic sports games:
Head on Soccer - NES
Super High Impact - Sega Genesis
Joe Montana Football - Sega Genesis
Tecmo Super Bowl - NES
NBA Jam - SNES
I think Madden 96 was the most visually pleasing of the later releases.

It plays quite different on the Turbo, too. Worth looking into for sure.
Awesome video man! It was nice to see the changes that happened with each game. RiP John Madden.
I wish I could give this video a 1,000 likes. well done
Excellent . Nostalgic as heck.
R.I.P. John Madden.
Rest In Peace John madden
This was so much fun to watch and brought back some amazing memories. Thank you and RIP, Coach Madden. 🙏
Great video and tribute. I loved listening to Pat Summerall and John Madden on Sunday during a game. No one can even come close to them. R.I.P. to them both. Remember, you are not promised tomorrow, so tell the people you love today ✌🏼
RIP John Madden
Back when EA actually cared about the product they put out. Good times
I felt like 97 was really good. It looked more like the originals but had all the extras. But there was no doubt it was ready to be on newer consoles
Joe Montana sports talk football was amazing, even though there were some seriously broken plays lol. Not sure if you’ve covered it yet
I really didn’t appreciate the Montana games until 93. That’s when Sega hit their first home run with the series.
Long live the Sports Talk series
@@SegaLordX home run? Don’t you mean touchdown?
Thanks for doing this video.
$40. Games back in 93 were that much or more 👍
EA needs to honor this guy the right way and put Madden's picture back on the covers of the games.
I imagine next year will be a return to form.
@@SegaLordX oh yeah!
Thats not an honor with the condition of the game the last decade. Take John's name off. They can use Urban Meyer.
@@bonesjackson81
Yeah I didn't want to be the one that said it but the series has taken a real hit as of late especially. What EA has turned the once great Madden series into is absolutely appalling. Especially now what a slap to the face and an insult to the man's name.
Why would you wanna see a legend's picture on a game that has been fucking garbage since 2006? And it keeps getting worse.
I think you scored a perfect touchdown with this one.
and I think that Madden himself...would be very grateful.
RIP John Madden.
Phenomenal video tribute 🏈👏🏼 Madden would be proud
So glad you made this video bro
Good to hear. Thank you.
THIS ONE IS FOR JOHN!!!
I “thumbs up” this video before it even started playing for 5 seconds. I already know the content will be awesome. Go 9ers!!
I loved Madden on genesis. it got me back into gaming.
Thank you for saying so.
@@SegaLordXAnd thank you!
The best of luck to your team this weekend. I believe you all are favored to win. 💪
One of the first Genesis games I owned at launch
The first one still remains without equal.
