  • Hey all. After having my E46 in many pieces over the past 18 months I needed to align the rear wheels.
    In this video I've just put a basic setup on. Will revisit this in the future once new tyres!

    Hey Danny.👋 Fairly early today, which is rare by my standards. I finally got to have a cuppa while enjoying the latest. Taking the risk of sounding like a broken record, I will say it again, the musical stylings coming out of the Autobarn is impeccable.👌 The Motown sound always hits the spot and I even heard a little tribute to one of my personal favourites, (RIP) Bill Withers. Looks like you got the M3 all dialed in, mate. That thing is sittin' right and sounds damn good, too.👊 Obviously, the landscape crew approves of this message. Who knew they were such motorsports enthusiasts? Your little dialog with the cows always gets me... quality entertainment, right there.😅😂 Have a great weekend, Dan.

    Great to see another string alignment fan. It really is addictive, and fun. One issue I struggled with was chasing front toe measurement, adjusting one side seemed to mess with the other slightly. Solved this by passing a long bar through the open windows and resting on the sills, and clamping it to the steering wheel so the wheel couldn’t turn. As for accuracy, if you use a thin enough fishing line, you can measure to 0.5 mm easily enough, which is around 5/100ths of a degree, or under 3 minutes.

    String set up seems pretty good. Probably best going camber first then toe, doing it the other way round will throw the toe off a mile however doing camber first then when you go onto toe it will move the camber ever so slightly but its normally minute amounts 👍🏽

  • @theseal666

    sounds like a nice setup w your wheel angles... I am actually running a slight tad toe-out in the rear on M3 and couple of degrees of extra caster in the front on my 3D top mounts for a tad more communication and loading on the front tyres + the extra camber gain. But pretty much same as you, but toe out for dat thicc turn-in.

    How i adjust alignments is caster camber and toe and allways do the rear first because thats what stears the car and dictates where it drives on the road

  • @chriscollier3598
    @chriscollier3598 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    With measuring off the centre of the wheels you need to make sure your track width is the same, because if not you'll not have a square box.

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does that really matter as long as the per axle measure that is the same? I don’t have the stock wheel offsets

    • @chriscollier3598
      @chriscollier3598 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dannyDC2 I'd assume if the axle width is the same then you should be ok, but I'm no expert on this, it's just something I found when I looked in to doing my own tracking, (that I never ended up doing)

  • @scunny1835
    @scunny1835 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What’s it like with the 4.1 final drive?

  • @fonzeyontrack5212
    @fonzeyontrack5212 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is the track width the same front to rear on the M3 and MR2? I tried doing the string method on my Exige but it was just melting my head trying to figure out how to keep the lines parallel when the rear of the car is wider than the front... I'm guessing/thinking that if the rear was 50mm wider (for example) then my distance from centre caps to string should be 64mm (using your example) minus 25mm on each side, so the fronts would be 64mm and the rears would be 39mm to the string... does that sound about right or am I overthinking?! Good update btw!

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Overthinking, massively. Why does it matter if the track is different ? You’re working per axle, not front to back. 👍

    • @fonzeyontrack5212
      @fonzeyontrack5212 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dannyDC2 I got fixated on the track of the car because I can't figure out how else to make sure the strings are parallel to the car. Even if I'm working one axle at a time, I still need to make sure the reference point/string is effectively in line with 0 degree of toe.... I think. With your M3 assuming track width is the same front/back, you can be sure of that by making sure both centre caps are at 64mm difference. I am trying to do this with axle stands and fishing line though... so your kit maybe helps in a way I've not wrapped my little head around yet :D

  • @jasonboyle7203
    @jasonboyle7203 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If good enuff for BTCC it must work rite simple but effective..

  • @pjay3028
    @pjay3028 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also bear in mind that if the string box is truly square, and the car is truly centred in the string box then if you take the two measurements for each front wheel (at the front of the front wheel rim and at the rear of the front wheel rim) and add these together, they should come to the same total for both sides of the car. The same goes for the rear measurements. Yours don't add up correctly so either the box isn't square, the car isn't centred or your measurements aren't accurate. Your front left adds up to 20.5 and front right adds up to 21.5, these should be the same. At the rear you've got 24 and 21.5 so you're a fair way out. I reckon it's a combination of issues because of the significant difference between the front and rear, unless the car is a bit bent!

    Hi Danny, which BC racing coilovers have you?

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheapest

  • @pjay3028
    @pjay3028 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should really use calipers to measure from the rim to the string because even being 0.25mm out will have a significant impact on the alignment, and you can't reliably measure to 0.25mm accuracy with a ruler. It's pretty easy just to use some cheap electronic calipers.
