  • Hello Steel Shooters,
Wrapping up the World Speed Shooting Championship Review with day 3 and Rimfire Rifle Open Division Match Analysis. Ended the day with 69.53 total time for an 8 stage match, which was a personal best for me, and solid enough to get me in the top 20 out of 164 shooters. Good enough for 16th overall and ahead of many of world's best.
The interesting part is that I didn't stress, just went up and took my time to get on target, insure a hit, and move to the next. Did that all day long and was able to achieve a personal best. I still had plenty of room to go faster but focused on consistency over speed and it paid off big time.
    Equipment:
    Magnum Research Switchbolt .22 Rifle
    Volquartsen TG2000 Trigger Group
    C-More Railway - 8 MOA Red dot
Wiland USA Modular lightweight Chassis MLCS-1
Tactical Solutions X-Ring Performance Spiral fluted Barrel

Thank you for the vote of confidence, the younger generation just transition so fast, their splits are .10-.20th of a second. I had a great time watching them at Worlds. Will continue to practice & next year just maybe I make the top 10. Appreciate the support!

Thanks Rick, Glad you enjoyed it. One of my favorite Steel Challenge Match days. Had a great squad with lots of great shooters.

Looking good. Shot my first Tier 2 match Friday then my first stage M at my local club today on Accelerator.

Hey Stephen - Awesome! Sounds like the tier 2 match gave you confidence to reach your goals at the club match. Definitely a reason to shoot the bigger matches; plus you get a chance to watch some great shooters, listen to their tips, and practice your mental game. Congrats on the M stage on Accelerator! Next you thing you know it will be GM. KBA. Keep Being Awesome.

Seems like the not going all out worked for you in the end. Congrats on the sub 70 sec!
Great match and overall great competition.

To be honest, I honestly feel that dry fire training should be at 100-110% of abilities, that is where we practice and learn; but at a match we should be shooting at 85-90% to insure consistency, 5 shots 5 hits. Hopefully will get a Dry Fire Training Program online soon, just need to make sure the audience wants it, and find some willing candidates to try it out.

Hey on Pendulum, 2.66+2.29+2.43+2.07 is a 9.45 not 9.20. I'm guessing the 2.66 you have listed for the first run was a 2.41?
Either way it was pointed out to me that I should never hose it on the 5th run.
Heres why (assuming that first run was a 2.41):
If your 5th run netted a simple 2.29 you're at 9.06 total. And if you could replicate the 4th run again with a second 2.07, you're at an 8.84!!
Just throwing that out there!! Either way good work and great shooting!!!!

Hey thanks for doing the math - You are correct, the total time was wrong, should have been 9.45 for the stage. Caught me in a cut and paste miss for the final time text block.
I usually go for broke on string 5 as long as the other 4 times on the stage where ok. Most of this time, it backfires, but 25% of the time, it yields a fantastic time... However, a goal while shooting every stage is that each subsequent string should be just a little bit faster.
Thanks for paying close attention - or at least being a quick with numbers.
This is a pretty good day, mastered my nerves on big stage, it has translated to a lot more confidence / ability to stay relaxed since then.
Nice to meet you ! say hello if we every catch a match together :)
      Karlos

      @mindinbox absolutely!!!
I'm still unclassified/not registered but working hard on the PCCO. Built it myself from parts and it tips the scales at 4.6lbs! Shot it at my first 8 stage match two weeks ago and made GM on three of the 8 stages!! It is a lot of fun!!
I had been searching everywhere for the current peak times by division but could never find them, but your videos allowed me to calculate all the peak times! Thank you!!!
Do you find that training at home on the timer is helpful?

It's been a plan for while to make a video on classification times, but it's one I still haven't gotten too. This site has them listed by Division- however, they are old, some of the par times have dropped since this was created. www.ssusa.org/content/steel-challenge-let-s-talk-about-classification/

To your question about training at home with/without a timer is extremely helpful. It's the major factor in my improving from a M to GM times for an entire 8 stage match. Training methodology / overview training course video is something I am working on - about three weeks away..

@mindinbox oh that'll be cool!!! I look forward to it!!!
I'm also having a heck of a hard time getting my RTs down. I'm running a timer that has a random delay in it from 3 to 5 seconds. I can get them down to the high 0.50's to low 0.60's, but somehow need to cut that down. Any suggestions?
