  • GERD, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or chronic acid reflux affects millions of Americans. Unfortunately, the first line treatment - use of acid reducing medication such as proton pump inhibitors - has become chronic and may present patients with future health risks.
For those with poorly controlled or severe acid reflux, there are two very good, minimally invasive options available today:
The Nissen Fundoplication involves wrapping the upper portion of the stomach around the lower part of the esophagus to put pressure on Lower Esophageal Sphincter and minimize acid refluxing back up into the esophagus.
More recently, a implantable medical device known as LINX - a bracelet type device about the diameter of a quarter - is placed around the Lower Esophageal Sphincter and offer similar results in a much shorter procedure with a shorter, easier recovery.

@@mlfreak8885 I was tested to have this procedure, but my tests for the function of the esophagus was below par, so have to have the laparoscopy procedure unfortunately.

Nissen is proven linx is not. I had a partial fundo and I’m good but 2 of my friends had linx are having issues swallowing.

Is linx device can be removed if lower esophageal sphincter is cured? or linx device stays forever in your sphincter?

I got the LINX procedure about 2 and a half years ago and glad I did. To answer your question: The LINX device is intended to last permanently but can be removed if necessary. I may be wrong but I don't think that there is any way that the lower esophageal sphincter can be cured at this time. By the way, when I talked to my surgeon about LINX v. fundoplication, he told me that he much prefers the LINX because it can last indefinitely (as far as they know) but he said that the stomach stretches and the fundoplication has to be re-done at some point in the future.

I heard you cannot burp well and become painfully gassy after a nissen.

Yep! My coworker can’t burp at all and makes him feel sick from it all the time after nissen

This technology seems antiquated. They should make one that senses when you swallow and opens and closes based on that.
It should also be able to tell when you need to burp or vomit.

Doc I hope I could ask a question. It has been three month since my fundoplication, which not very good. Is it possible to tear it down and change to stretta instead?
