  • This is my second video on using V2L to power my home. When I made the first video my electric car didn’t have a V2L, but now I have BYD Seal with V2L I wanted to make a second video showing it in action. I suggest you watch the first video to help put this one into context

    In my inverter I have set the priority: Solar First, then Utility (normally switched off) then Battery. SUB. I have also set the batteries to only charge from solar. If U (V2L) can meet 100% of the house load (my night time usage is 500-800W) then it is as you see in my video. If U can’t support the house load, then B will make up the difference.
    I now made a 3rd video which is a simplified summary of what I’m doing.

    This is great news! I didn't know that V2L was already possible with the BYD Seal.

    Fantastic information, I am surprised that not more people review BYD car mentions this feature.👍

      It works best with home solar, otherwise you would have to run an extension cable into the house and plug things into it.

    In the not too distant future EV's with V2L capability will have a major bearing on the kWh's required for off grid ESS specifications. This video shows exactly how this will happen. 👏👏👏

    I have a Model 3 and live in Switzerland. I will be considering the BYD seal once it comes to Switzerland as the Model 3 highland is just a facelift with no USS, front camera and worse functionality by moving all controls to the steering wheel.

    This is amazing info! Its giving me ideas. I have solar as well, but I use about 20 kwh at night in winter mainly for heating. I reckon i can save 100 bucks a month during the winter months using V2L. Just wonder how much it would cost to install the system to work with my exisiting solar system.

    • @EcoHouseThailand
      @EcoHouseThailand  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Installing a transfer switch shouldn’t cost much, by installer did it when we installed the inverters. I did the rest of the installation myself

    Lol.. I just bought a Seal a week ago as well... With the same idea to power my home at night.
    The developers of my gated community in hua hin for whatever reason don't want me to share my solar power with my neighbours any more (over the private village grid they claim to own). So I started to look at a battery solution (as backup for the case the legal solution won't work out). Just need to figure a way to do so without having to replace my on-grid inverter.

    Question about Seal's V2L in general (not for powering a house) - does the car need be switched off to use the V2L or can it be on at the same time? I.e. can I run the heater / AC in the car simultaneously when powering some external devices through the charge port?

      I have a whole bunch of requests to get through first. The Seal is a fantastic car, its ADAS system is not. I have most of it switched off. Have you watched my video on the infotainment system walkthrough? I talk about it there.

    The Seal is open for orders in Australia and I am interested in the long range model. I currently have the Atto 3. There are not many good reviews on the operation and performance etc of this EV. You could be one of the first. I am interested in the real world range of the seal. Have you done a video about this topic. You said you have the 82.5kWh battery, is it the RWD or AWD.

    Very interesting. Here in the UK I asked the makers of 'Zappi' chargers, about using the Seal V2L much like a power wall, as they make inverters for their own brand of home battery. I was going to charge the car at cheap 'off-peak' electricity rates. They told me using the car to power the house was not feasible ?

    • @EcoHouseThailand
      @EcoHouseThailand  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You should watch my first video on V2L linked in the description. I had a transfer switch with 2 AC in (grid and V2L) and one AC out into the inverter

    Hi! Just got the Seal here (ireland) and I have noticed and a few others that the zappi charger and a few others show output of 7kw but the byd is only showing 6.2 on the screen. Also tried this at 11kw charger and similar results. Have you noticed any large drops from the supply to the charger? I know there tends to be some transmission loss but this seems excessive.

    • @EcoHouseThailand
      @EcoHouseThailand  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My home charger pulls 7kW AC but only 6.2 DC is added the battery

    Hi, Peter from Slovakia here. I have Ioniq 5 and intend to power my house with v2l too. However, the output from the car is one phase only. Does your inverter accept this? Plus, if you wish to top up your home battery from your Seal, you must certainly reduce the charging power to keep the house running. The home battery cannot be charged and discharged at the same time. Is it so? Thanks for your reply

    • @EcoHouseThailand
      @EcoHouseThailand  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes my inverter is single phase. I have set my inverter to only charge my home batteries from Solar. I’m not sure if you seen all three videos I have done on V2L, but I talk about running the house load only and only at night. This preserves my home batteries.

    • @katarinaspisiakova1201
      @katarinaspisiakova1201 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ok, thanks for your reply. My inverter is 3 phase, so I am curious to see how it will treat one-phase power from my car.
      Anyway, there is a bidirectional ac charger coming from Renault in the autumn and that should work on cars having v2l capability. And its price should be acceptable too. Unlike these 10.000 usd dc bidirectional chargers coming from us this year

      Thanks. No I’m not but I have research every aspect of the house build for years before we started to build. Everything was planned ahead to be off-grid. The house is super insulated but also with built-in natural cooling. It might look a bit funny, but it is designed on scientific principles for the climate here in Thailand, with rainwater harvesting and fruit and veggies growing in the garden.

    Sacrifice the car battery to supplement house solar battery. Bummer if the wife wants to go shopping and charge is too low. lol. How many kW is the car battery? (myself wondered about adding a few panels to my system, in order to better support the rainy days but it may still not be enough)

    • @EcoHouseThailand
      @EcoHouseThailand  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      A Tesla PowerWall has 13.5 kWh the BYD Seal has 82.5 kWh. Powering my house load for a few hours is insignificant compared to propelling 2 Tonnes of metal 650km

    • @darwinjina
      @darwinjina 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@EcoHouseThailand Hmm, my consumption avg is only 40 kWh/day, so, yea, that can help thru the rainy season as long as I can get some sunny days. Is the warranty on the car battery based on time or cycles? How long does it take to transfer say 10 kWh ?

    • @EcoHouseThailand
      @EcoHouseThailand  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@darwinjinaWarranty here in Thailand is 8 years 160,000km. The V2L max transfer rate is 3.5kW but it matches the load demand in real time. If your house was using say 1kW/hour then 10kW would take 10 hours.
