  • Back at it again on the 76 Harley Davidson Ironhead Sportster Chopper Saga. After working on the other sportster chopper, I decided to work with the 76 Ironhead Sportster. I picked up a tool from the post office that was sent to me from one of you guys to help me with putting the sportster clutch preasure plate back onto the clutch basket. In this video, I use this clutch tool, and I go through the steps of how to adjust the clutch on a 76 Harley Davidson Ironhead Sportster. Sportster Chopper that is. It should pretty much be the same for most ironheads up to 1978.

    Love the ratchet strap idea...back in the day when I first learned how, I used my drive chain. Had and old bro tell me he didn't have a tool for the clutch plates and I told him "Don't need one"...he stood there the whole time in the driveway and watched me do the compression thing with my chain. All he could say is "I've NEVER seen someone do it like that.Cool"...part of the mistique that stories are shared about. Keep the rubber down and never lose track of your know how tools. Class of '73 FOREVER!...The Lion Head

      Right? That's why I made the fork seal driver from a piece of pvc pipe rather than spending the big bucks on the "official" tool.

    That clutch adjustment has stood the test of time for decades, process stays the same from your Iron to my Twin Cam and Buell. I guess if it's not broken, no need to fix it. Great video Tramp.

    Spent time doing this a few times also. I completely got my 75 Iron head back together after a rebuild. Also redid the Bendix Zenith I was running. I was running Molly rings on a .40 over top. Well long story short. I did not tighten one of the screws in the throttle butter fly. It went down the rear jug and scratched it. As they say it started to smoke like a old woodburning train

    I just got my 71 running, took it to the road and noticed the clutch cable was way too tight, hoping the last owner didn't burn the plates out. This video just saved me so much headache. I just got that same book in too. I'm ready to learn as much as possible from you.

    Just wanted to tell you thanks for your videos, I was lucky enough to just purchase my first bike, I’m about your age and grew up in a family full of Harley riders. I actually used a lot of information I got outta watching your videos In making my choice. I went with a carb 88 evo. A 99 wide glide that I wanna learn to work on myself. Everyone tried to tell me to get fuel injected or a new bike as my first but I feel like your advise of the evo with a carb was best for me. I like how easy it is to relate to you and your laid back unaggressive attitude. Most bike guys try to act as hard as possible all the time and some times it’s best to just be yourself. I hope I can learn more about working on my bike in the future watching your videos. Appreciate it!

      Right on flat earth I'm a firm beleaver I'm old school carberater works fine for me and dirt cheap for a kit simpler is better electronic ignition fuel injection no thanks I'm leaving mine factory stock.every one had all kinds of goofy ideas to change this snd modify that put comstar rems get rid if the spokes ..no ay man Mines a 72 bone stock and its staying that way.except for the rake nothings ben touched

    Yes they are carbs are realy the best and simpler never mind your friends imfo follow yiur heart i got a 78 with a carb to rebuild my carb the kit was 45 dollars and it was the orignol carb im not a fuel.ingectio guy

      My one friend said your 1000 is to small get a newer bike a big monster no thanks Mines only 500 lbs factory don't need a huge moose had them before mins just right for me I can move it by my self easlly

    I loosen all the nuts, then remove all the nuts but the top one. Then remove it slowly and it will pop right off. Been removing them that way for many years.

    For the six locking nuts that hold the clutch plate in is there an adjustment for how tight they should be? my clutch will not engage therefore when it is put into gear it will stall. The clutch is brand new.

      You might have too thick of oil viscosity or too much slack in your clutch just before disengaging.

    Might be off topic but I seen your regulator on the iron head....my reg doesn't come with instructions...which wire is A F and G..have red green and black...red and green are close to each other black is kind of by itself...its a Chinesium one so not sure any info helps....even from Viewers .thanks keep the rubber on the road

      If it were weak, I would think it would make for a weak clutch with slipping during acceleration.

    saddle tramp what do you think about external venting for combustion chamber on a twin cam ? have you ever done this ? also is it better than what harley does from the factory ? they blow it right back into the throttle body which is quite messy .. thank you for your advice .

      I've got that on both my evos. A crossover tube going from one head to the other with a line going down the motor and a catch canister on the other end to vent. A lot cleaner that way.

      This should work since it's a 78..and i doubt the clutch has ever ben changed

    Black or real dirty oil makes every thing work a lot harder and it's harder on the clutches

    When doing up the six nyloc nuts, should the back of the pressure plate butt up to the flared end of the six spacers, or should I leave some slack?

      They need to to be all the way against the spacers.

      @@SaddleTrampTV Thanks. I must have overtightened the previous set because they look like detonated pipe bombs. The outside plate was convex and I had to pry the clutch apart with chisels. After hammering everything else flat and buying new spacers/outside plate, I can report all is well.

    I am building a 2000 xlh. I was too stupid too mark my oil lines. Can you help in directing me as to all oil lines for a Tc-bros custom oil tank.

      I have that same oil tank on the Tramp. The bottom bung is your feed going to the motor. The two top bungs: one is for your return line and the other if for your vent line. You choose on which side you want your return and vent to be.

      I believe the larger line is the feed line (they both come out from behind the case). It is starting to look alot like the Tramp,

      Tried it no longer pulling when clutch lever pulled and still rips ass with no slip. This was my only hang up on my build thanks man👍🏿

    Even though this is 3 years old, maybe someone today is wondering... Having ridden Ironheads for 25 years, the "special tool" I always used was " my FOOT" ! Works fantastic ! Yup ! And just like you think, ya just hold the bike with one hand, and shove that plate down with your big ol' foot, while screwing on a nut. Now here's the technical part... " MOVE YOUR FOOT A LITTLE", and shove that bad boy down again, and screw another nut on. From there the rest is essy. Ya don't even need your foot any more after the first couple nuts, providing you put the first two on opposite of each other.
    It's easy to over think things sometimes. I guess we've all done that.

      Back in the mid 70's I even put a woman's Penthouse picture on top of the gas tank. I used what they called Polly medium from an art store. You cut out a picture you want to use. Make up a solution of this and then vinegar and water solutions. You would takes turns putting the picture in these solutions and let it set in each for a while. After doing this for a while you can pull the picture right off the paper. Just like it would be a decal. Then you would just have a blank sheet of White paper the picture was on. I wish I had it back or one just like it but I don't know if I can still ride. I have both hips and both knees replaced. And other bone problems too and this is all from having osteoarthritis where the joints just wear out. But one thing about it, I was young then. And every time while riding my bike I always felt free. A very good feeling back then. I hope the picture came thru too you.

    I like my old harley but again there only as good as the owner keep you.oil clean and you can avoid 80 percent of your issues
