When the Cranberries were first discovered in the early nineties they had triggered a bidding war between major record labels and seemed poised for certain success. However, after recording their first album, things seemed far less secure. In 1993, The Cranberries had released their second single, “Linger,” to a disappointing response in the UK. Just when the band feared they were about to be dropped by the label, “Linger” became a surprise sensation in the US. From that moment, The Cranberries were on their way to becoming one of the most important indie-pop bands of the decade.
The success of “Linger” and its album - Everybody’s Doing It So Why Can’t We - was the start of a long, successful, and international career for The Cranberries. The band would go on to record eight albums together, up until the tragic passing of O’Riordan in 2018. Her unexpected death came as the band was preparing material for their eighth album. Using the demo vocals she had recorded prior to her death, the band released the album posthumously in 2019, as their final work together. They called it In the End
The Cranberries sold over 50 million albums worldwide since their debut, and remained incredibly popular with international audiences up until their dissolution after O’Riordan’s passing. Their sound evolved over the years, but they maintained their powerful and influential presence. With “Linger” the world was introduced to O’Riordan’s mesmerizing vocals and the band’s singular sound -- and the world would never be the same.

I’ve loved the Cranberries for 30 yrs. I feel Dolores’ death was a huuuuge loss to the music industry, both for herself and the band. I saw them in Glasgow at the armadillo, years ago and I was gobsmacked! I couldn’t believe that they sounded just like their albums! A lot of times bands speed up or the lead can’t sing nearly as well as they lead everyone to believe. They were fabulous and her voice? OMFG! Unbelievable. RIP girl, we miss you. 🌟❤️
I was there the night she first sang with the lads in Ruby's nightclub, with two friends, Pat Foley and Davy Nolan. They were still called The Cranberry Saw Us at that time. I knew the Hogan brothers through their father Noel Sr. He was good friends with my father and we all drank in the same small pub in Limerick, Squire McGuires.
In the early 90's the lads used to drop in for a pint. I remember the first day Mike told us they had found a new singer, a county woman called Dolores. We thought it was a joke. Who ever heard of a rock singer called Dolores, and a county girl, we reckoned they were turning into a country and western outfit. ( C&W was very popular in Ireland at that time ;-) still is )
So the three of us trundled off down to Ruby's Night Club for their first gig. There were about 100 people there. The majority for the late drinking. In those days pubs in Ireland closed at 10.30pm on sunday night, but night clubs could serve until 1.30am.. To cut a long story short Dolores and The Statues were superb. Whatever about the lads playing ( The Statues ) Dolores could sing. Singing Linger she quietened a rowdy night club like I'd never experienced before or since. I bet you no one can remember who they were opening for that night. I can't.
The Statues!! A nickname for the group for a while around Limerick. The two lads just stood up looked at their boots and played. Dolores spent more time looking at the drummer than the audience. And when she did face the audience she also looked down never really making eye contact. Seriously you would never have thought they would make it except for that voice. It was different. It was great to see them develop into a real group over the next few years.

I have a distinct memory of visiting friends at Michigan State in some kind of common area when the video for this song came on MTV and a couple of guys stated dissing the song and left the room. It wasn't, I guess, hard enough for them, but I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. The song was so incedibly beautiful and the video was absolutely mesmerizing. I loved it, but it was more than just loving it. I was haunted by it. Without even fully understanding what it was about or what the lyrics were saying, I was moved almost to tears by the magic of it. So I was happy to watch this great video all these years later talking about this great song, but shocked to hear that Dolores O'Riordan is no longer with us. I must have missed that news report when it happened. May she rest in peace. I'm so thankful that she left us this priceless masterpiece as a gift that will be with us forever.

I remember exactly tre first time I've heard this song, summer 93 , I was 19. A friend of mine gave me the cassette of their first album...it was at night, lying in bed listening with my walkman...as soon as I got to the 7th track I fell in love with it...so sweet, so emotional, one of my all time fav!
Almost 30 years after I heard 'Linger' for the very first time on MTV (in Mexico of all places in the world!), I still get the chills when I hear Dolores humming to the tunes of the guitar and strings. Their music and her voice have been a huge part of my life, and when I'm reminded of that, I can't help the rush of emotions that strike me every single time I hear their music again. Definitely a great part of my life's "Sound Track". Thank you for this amazing video of this incredible song by this huge band.
This is such an awesome song. I didn't like it so much until later in life when I become more perceptive and started listening. Being honest, naked and vulnerable is a really powerful thing when it comes to connecting with people.

I love their songs. This band has changed my life. They made a huge part of the soundtrack of the beginning of my relationship with my wife in the 90s.
It was a dream coming true when I visited Limerick last year. So many thoughts came to my head about their history while I walked through those streets. They will never be forgotten. Wonderful band.

I was a massive Suede fan (still am) and closely followed their tour of America in the music press. It quickly became clear Suede’s support band, The Cranberries, were getting all the headline, much to my dismay. Then I heard them. I couldn’t believe her voice. It was like nothing else and very like an Irish, female version of Brett Anderson. I loved them ever since.
I went to see The The touring in support of the Dusk album. While the name of the support band was on the tickets, I had not heard them at the time. The Cranberries took the stage to no fanfare at all. The moment Dolores began singing every person was riveted. I've never seen a direct support receive such an enthusiastic, and loud, positive reception. It was a beautiful performance. The next day everyone I was with at the concert purchased the first album.

I was a child when this song came out and I always loved it. It didn't mean much to me back then. Now I'm 39 and when I hear this song I have to sit down because all these memories from my life come flooding back. It all ends at some point, I'm just glad songs like this help me get through.

The Cranberries and Delores will forever be one of my all time favorites. Being 64yo my list is many but my top list is few, they and Delores are in the top tier. What an unfortunate finality to such brilliance.

Just a stunningly beautiful song - both the music and Dolores' other worldly voice. I've known the song since its release, heard it a thousand times (their last Tiny Desk appearance is magical) and yet after hearing you talk about the origin of the song for fifteen minutes, the moment you sit down with the guitar and strum out the four chords that make up the song - it's that second cord - the A with the F sharp - that one moment takes my breath away, I get chills, my skin gets goosebumps (I'm sure the Brits have an entirely different word for it) and my eyes fill with tears. That song is just indelibly stamped on my soul (and Dolores will forever be missed)
"Linger" is one of my all time favorite tracks and my favorite Cranberries song. I always loved the melancholy that is transported with the melody and the mood.
Yes, you are right, it's not always the theory that does it. Music always comes from the heart, not only from the sheets. Since I got back to making music by myself, I've learnt a lot about tension and feeling. You don't need to use the notes C, E and G only when performing a C Major chord. And not all chords need to fit. More important is - as I said - tension and feeling.
Imagine when "Linger" came out. It was February 1993. Well, I was about 19 years old. We, the dudes, wanted to be cool anyhow. If a relationsip ends, then so what... But when I heard "Linger" for the first time, it shivered down my spine. This is why this song is so special for me. The cool dude who ended a relationsip came across this song. Well, no other words. :-)

I was super lucky to tour as feargs drum tech filling in for their usual guy when he had a family emergency for an asian tour , I wasnt aware of all their catalogue and hearing it in rehearsals and then the shows was an ear opener . At some point in Asia whilst looking for a table at the hotel breakfast , I was beckoned to sit with Delores and her husband at the time she was so lovely taking in interest in my life and family back home , I was worried being a fill in tech being asked to sit with the principal singer. But I finished that breakfast with such admiration . she was an amazing voice and performer and for the moment we three sat and talked about family and touring and our home life it was lovely whilst being far away from our own that morning in Singapore . it goes without saying I listen to the band a lot these days , the songs have special moments and memories from that tour, It was heartbreaking when I saw the news she had passed.
id like to add to this Noel is a powerhouse guitarist, he layered tones so well and textures .I would sit behind Ferg watching Noel (- being a guitarist myself not a drummer in fact - )its great to hear the story behind this song, as I kind of didn't talk much with the band- being the new temp guy that landed in such a close knit family of a band and crew for a couple of months run, (but thats all on me not the band or crew- I get anxiety )

Can’t thank you enough for these Warren. It means so much to us Cranberries fans. As a songwriter I’m so inspired by the way her melodies played around the chords rarely landing on triad notes. She’s a very underrated songwriter.
Dolores was a great songwritter, that never tried to be that she was not. Dolores was youngest 9 siblings. And her family was so poor.
Her lyrics never tried to be so poethic, and metrically perfect, just it were beautiful and honest. In fact, her lyrics were a reflection that she was: goodness and purity. She was a sweet soul
She never was underrated. She was very famous since her youth. 90-th icon without a doubt.
Dolores could be my mother by age, but since I heard her and saw her for the first time in the Dreams video in the late 90's I fell in love instantly.
I was just a 4 or 5 year old boy, but I remember that first time. His voice was the closest thing to that of an angel. In addition, Dolores was a really unique girl, in my opinion so beautiful with a precious green eyes

I heard the song in 93 whilst on holiday in eire , I got back to London telling everyone about the song and how it stopped me in my tracks and being moved beyond , it finally hit Uk and everyone heard it thankfully. A forever classic song / voice

Warren… Your videos keep getting better and better. It’s your love and passion that makes them so good. Musical facts can be told by a soulless computer program. But your passion and love for music reaches out and pulls the viewer in. Videos in this particular series can be understood by the casual music fan or by a heavily fanatic fan of music and musical production. “Linger” was timeless the first time I heard it. It was one of those songs where it felt like it was always around and part of us even when it was released. Bowie’s “Heroes” is another one of those songs. Dolores O’Riordan was one of those incredibly gifted people who seemed like a gift from the secular goddesses. Thanks for giving this classic the treatment it deserves. ✌🏽❤️🎸

Always loved this song. So grateful that it found its way to American radios, otherwise I might never have heard it! Such an ethereal, beautiful tune. My favorite from this album is the opening track. It has atmosphere in DROVES!! O'Riordan showcased her legendary vocals and the band proved just how good they were. Top notch.

This is the song that inspired me to learn guitar during the covid outbreak time. Yes this is the song change the world. But more importantly it change my life.
I remember my first week at university, August 1993, and my new girlfriend's TV was tuned to MTV. At the time, they had these drops called "Buzz Clips," where they'd showcase up-and-coming alternative acts. In this line-up was "Linger," and I went, "Oh man, I just bought that CD at the school bookstore while getting my Sundays CD."
I can’t play in instrument to save myself .... but as I like to say, I am the other half of the equation > the audience! So I love hearing you breakdown, explain and reminisce how this and many enduring and influential songs have been put together. It’s a treat every time :-)
And you just never know I may just pickup an instrument one day and give it a go :-P

When the song modulates on the C chord the feeling I have is same as seeing the love of my life for the first time.
I was in high school when Linger dropped and I instantly fell in love with the band and Dolores' angelic vocals. So sad that she passed away but her voice and the band's impact left a indelible footprint on the music scene and in so many people's lives. Just now finding your channel and I am hooked. Keep up the great work!

I know it’s a popular narrative - on some Chanel’s - to say Americans don’t know or appreciate culture, but many of us do. So thank you for also pointing that out. “Linger” and the accompanying video were so fresh, so 90’s.
I’ll say it like this: for those of us (Gen X’rs) who were coming of age in the early 90’s, The Cranberries were one of the first bands of that period that managed to be “alternative” music (a term music stores used around this time to denote anything not mainstream) deep and new without copying the “Seattle Scene”. I loved Nirvana, but for probably all of 1992, at least in the US, you were either a Nirvana fan or a Pearl Jam fan. (Of course both are equally great bands, it’s only about preference.)
The Cranberries, Bjork, Suzanne Vega, and others were creating their own unique sound. And it was a great time to appreciate music. While many of us appreciated Grunge, and it’s significance in terms of breaking away from the overly produce sounds and videos of the late 80’s. But The Cranberries took it one step further, giving it that “world music” feel. They were more my tempo. I love that coffee shop (or cafe) rock. And their first album was such good “autumn music”.

The Cranberries are a huge band from my youth, watching them live (under pouring rain in fact lol) was one of the best live gigs I've ever seen and their music just stuck with me and my now wife (which endured the Rain with me on that day) forever. These Cranberries video series you are releasing are pure gold.

Really enjoyed this review Warren. For me this song is timeless. I was attending college at the time this song played on a Friday night new music hour on the local college radio station. Fell in love with it instantly. Till this day it takes me back to that nostalgic time of a past girlfriend around Christmas time. Glad this song was included in your excellent series. Thank you!

Wow... thanks for this video! It's amazing to see what a difference there is from demo to the final polished album track. Steven Street is a genius and his production helped put The Cranberries on the map. Everything and everyone came together at the right time to create magic. I'm a sucker for background vocals, harmonies, and swelling synths and strings. I've always picked up on these sounds more than melody or lead vocals, such as with The Bangles "Eternal Flame" or The Cure's "Just Like Heaven". Subscribed!

Linger is such a rarity in music. A truly perfect song in my opinion. It blows my mind that it wasn't an immediate hit.
It's one of my top 5 favourite songs. It's sweeps into your heart, soul and mind all at once and its a real pleasure to hear how it was produced. Thank you. My favourite videos on TH-cam are videos about songs so this one is a real treat for me.

This song would not have been what it was without the strings and the backing vocal. Those elements added just the right atmosphere to the song.
I've always been an "old" music fan. In the 80s, I was listening to 60s and 70s music, and in the 90s, I was listening to 60s, 70s and 80s music. But I bought this album, and I bought it for "Linger". I didn't buy many current albums, so this was highly unusual. I still love the Cranberries and this song is still my very favorite.

Delores and I would be the same age now if she were still with us; when she passed, I had just the previous year tried the same thing... When I first heard “Linger” on the radio, I was driving down the interstate, and I somehow already knew all the words and sang with it. The song was already in me. I’ve never experienced that before. I’ve always felt such a deep connection with The Cranberries. I’ll never get over it.
