  • I do love me some Gacha games; they're the only game genre that I poke my head into every once in a while on mobile. Since I have a fair bit of experience in the genre, and the few videos that I've seen on the topic weren't to my tastes, I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring. This is the first video in the Inside Perspective series, which just means I don't have to state that I am not a professional multiple times. Timestamps for the games being discussed are below, and timestamps for the music used will be in the comments.

Arknights' difficulty being labeled as a number bloat issue feels kinda painful to hear considering that there's a challenge niche where they play only unpromoted characters even at the hardest challenges...The biggest contributor for the game's difficulty is not of stats but understanding of the mechanics and enemies on the stage.
For example on the showcased stage 2-10 the left side of the map enemies are weak against "arts/magic" damage, even by just enemy visuals, enemies with shields/armor in the game is most likely weak to magic. On the right side most of the mobs are weak so you only need one decent melee unit but there are enemy drones that fly so you need an anti-air unit to deal against them.
To learn about these enemy weaknesses you can check the "enemies" page before you start the stage and then observe the indicators for the enemy pathways.

It's nice to hear that one of the biggest gachas has more strategic depth than I thought. Probably went in with the wrong mindset of powerleveling the highest pulled rarity. I still have it installed, so I might give it another go and revise my rating.

    • @sb18wlc
      @sb18wlc 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +113

@@remyskosm Definitely give it another try, you'll be missing all the depth in the gameplay if you dont go even past chapter 4, you won't believe how creative mechanics get especially at event stages and other unlockable content.
Also maybe a bit of tip, its quite recommend raising lower tier units first simply because they're efficient for how small investment you'll need to give them for a big stat increase, some low-tier operators actually have higher base stats compared to their higher rarity counterparts, their difference comes mainly from their skills they can use.

@@remyskosmIts hard to usually out power the early game with the shiny 6 stars for two reasons
      1. Using too many high rarity especially 6* will cause your dp economy to plummet. If you noticed they are very expensive to place than lower rarity ones
      2. Units in the game has 2 skills (3 for 6*) where the succeeding ones can be accessed via promoting. In 6* characters case most Elite 0 skills are AWFUL.
This is what seperates arknights from the other games on the list. They dont want you to ungga bungga through the game that easily

@@remyskosm As stated before, this game has much more depth than it might seem on the surface. One of my friends that doesn't even play compared it to a standard tower defense like TDBloons, which hurt my soul. In standard tower defense games you just upgrade your characters and put them in front of the blue box hoping you've got enough stats, and if not you just keep upgrading. While it's somewhat true in arknights, there are a lot of situations in which the only thing that can make a difference is your brain. Playing the hard stage on practice mode, learning the timings of the enemies and their weaknesses, and coordinating them to the retreat, deployement, and skill recovery rate of your operators is what makes this game pretty damn unique. In the HARDEST stages (aka Contingency Contracts/some story stages), or when imposing yourself a challenge, it's all about knowledge, timing and being really precise.
Honestly there are only a very select few units in the game that you can even able to afford to powerlevel at the beggining. Most cases it's pretty useless to do that because the stronger skills on 6 star operators are locked behind the E2 wall, and those skills are usually the bread and butter of 6 stars. So apart from the minimal amount of stats you get for the amount of materials you need to spend on those last 30 levels, it's just not worth it. Not to say that most stages require you to be able to defend in more than one place, so funneling the materials just onto the 6 stars makes your life just harder.
I've played many many gachas, such as Azur lane (2yrs), Honkai Impact (2yrs+ since launch), Genshin (since launch), etc... But the only one that stuck with me for the full duration was Arknights (with a total of 3 years+ of logins, I think lol), and for a good reason.
The designs were what caught my attention, but excellent storywriting and worldbulding was what kept me, but this last part might not be for everyone.
The only big deterrent that is not gameplay for this game is the amount of text and information you have to read and keep.

i usually dont get much into the story i play for gameplay, but arknights is one of the few gacha’s that got me to research the lore. every new event is exciting and brings new mechanics. they add new game modes all the time to keep things fresh. skins can be bought with in game currency. rates are pretty nice compared to other games since you just need the character no added artifact or weapon (and dupes are never necessary they barely add anything to the character so you only need one copy) I’ve played every game on this list and more but idk arknights just has me in a grip hold. It took me a second to really get an understanding of the mechanics, but once you get over the initial hump things become a lot more fun. you start mixing and matching operators that work best together. There’s just so many mechanics that make the game much more strategy based. There’s phys/arts damage split, phys def (flat) vs arts res (percentage), arts damage buffers, flat and percentage based attack buffers, def/arts res debuffers, fragility (percent damage debuff), multiple types of crowd control, and new stage mechanics every event. Once i learned the mechanics the game became way more interesting to play.

I suggest giving Path to Nowhere another shot. It has one of the best storytelling I've seen in any gacha game, on par with the likes of Reverse 1999, especially in the later chapters. It's fully voice acted too, not to mention the beautiful characters, beautiful skins, banger music, really fun events, very fast dailies, little-to-no RNG in the gearing system, and the fact that it's very F2P friendly (they give a lot of gacha currency). The only downsides it has that I can think of are the time-limited gear (ToA crimebrands), how slow it is to level-up the characters, and the fact that the combat might not be for everyone. Overall I think it's a very underrated game, they really should promote it more with a focus on the story like what Hi3rd did.

@@lesmoonwalker PTN does take a while to grind in somecases especially at the start but compared to Genshin it's not really slow *unless* you are building multiple S-Ranks to max at the same time, and/or use all or even most of the resource crates from events, the Surveillance Order(battlepass), and regularly occurring login events to level up skills which is a major (I'm pretty sure unintentional) pitfall for new player and players that don't know better. Take this with a grain of salt since I'm in the late-game, it usually takes me like 2-3 days to have enough rank up materials to get a new S-Rank to P3 LV70 if I don't already have the materials and as for the level up materials, DisCoins and Mania Crystals, I usually have enough of both at any given time to level up a new S-Rank all the way to LV80 and get at least one of their skills to 8(max is 10) which is usually good enough. The one exception is the class specific phase up resource which usually takes me 2-3 days to farm for and only 3 of the 6 classes are available any given day outside of the last day of the server week.
Also I feel the need to clarify that when I say "2-3 days" I mean like 2 minutes tops to do all dailies, spend all stamina, claim the free stamina refreshes, use those up, and excluding doing Battlefrontline for the premium currency which only needs to be done three time the entire week to get all the hypercubes or even 90% of them if you aren't feeling it that week. All in all, I feel like the time you need to dedicate purely to just farming is a fraction of what's needed for games like Genshin, FGO, and even Arknights. Again this is kinda dependent on having a team that can clear most of the Story, farming, and event stages which isn't actually that difficult to build especially with units like Che and Labyrinth who are of the lowest rarity but as useful as S-Ranks, Laby especially basically being a psuedo S-Rank in my opinion just due to how crazy well she preforms(She's even fun to use to boot) and even S-Ranks, so long as you complete the Beginner event to get that free NOX who has been meta with low investment since day one (On a sidenote: if Remys reads this or even anyone who tried PTN but dropped it early and wants to revisit it and you didn't get the free NOX, honestly if you don't feel really attached to the account and you're still at the very beginning of the game and especially if you didn't yet get an S-Rank then just make a new account. Yes, that free NOX is that worth it as she can carry you through the begining to CH8 and the only reason she can't *carry* you further is because the difficulty spike in CH9 can only be truly overcome through strategy as pure reliance on numbers will kill you(Not to say that NOX becomes any less useful as she still remains just as powerful, it's just that you can't get carried in the harder content)).
I know this is all a tiny bit over the top of a response to you're comment, it's just I really in love with PTN, although I won't blindly defend it, I do acknowledge that it has its faults and isn't for everyone, but I do want more people to try it out because in my eyes it has one of the best stories in all gaming and I'd say the best story of all gatcha and I say this because of its storytelling. With all of the main story and all event stories(even if it takes a week after the event releases for it to be implemented) fully voice acted voice acted and in English too and fantastic storytelling and world building, PTN has ruined reading the stories in other gatchas for me, even Arknights which I still hold as having the best world building just can't compare in my eyes anymore and I'm even starting to see flaws in other gatchas' storytelling because of my experience with how well PTN does it which is just insane with how I went into PTN a day after global launched expecting it to be a fanservice heavy, kinda raunchy, bare bones game in-terms of story with how it was advertised and presented, and now I'd say it's one of the least lewd games and has some of the deepest characterization and so much thought was put into it that it wouldn't surprise me if the devs came out and said that they wrote 90% of the story first and then made a game around it.

The number bloat issue in AK exists if the player chooses to bloat the numbers of enemies up (Ex: high risk CC and higher difficulty integrated strategies). But as far as I have played AK, you don't need the shiniest new 6* to clear stages because you could do fine with lower rarity ones, you just need to think and find the right solutions to a specific stage, if you can't, then find a guide or borrow a unit from a friend.
Numbers bloat feels like the last thing you could address about AK because there are more glaring ones like:
    - Powercreep
    - 300 pulls for spark
    - Soul sucking farm mechanics
    - Base mechanic remaining untouched for years
I've played the game for around 3 years now, these are some of the more glaring issues that I've noticed, but nonetheless I continue to play it because of the extensive lore, art, generosity, pretty great endgame content (it has a permanent themed roguelike with different endings), and definitely music.

I think the genshin exploration limitation is more or less gone by now, especially with the introduction of multilevel maps and fontaine in particular. I always liked that you could basically farm for all kinds of stuff in the overworld, ignoring all the resin resources. Farming basic mats from monsters, farming items for character ascensions, chasing down every oculus and chest, hunting for all the puzzles, and also trying to do all the world quests different npcs offer (often you have to approach them to trigger a multi-quest chain so you wont see it by default)... and there are also hidden achievements that grant you even more primos. Imo genshin reception completely depends on the type of player you are - casually, youll have a great time bc youll go thru the story at a healthy pace and not burn out, but hardcore powering thru everything (esp if you dont care about lore and the hidden bits literally everywhere and just skip all dialogue) will be Burnout Fiesta and you wont have fun doing nothing but logging in to clear resin/grind for artifacts and getting out. The writers from MHY do a great job, and theyve improved tremendously on their execution over the various regions (shoutout to inazuma/ekanomia i hated you sm). Its a big of a slog to get thru the early stages as a new player now, but pacing yourself can prevent a lot of overexhaustion and gave me a better longevity to playing the game (coming from someone who cleared dragonspine day 1 in its initial hours). Wish they improved the gacha rates like the 75/25 for weapons in HSR bc despite the abundant primos provided in recent events that consistently come up, having 2x weapon and 2x character banners at once is a pain in the *ss. That being said, its very f2p since you just gotta pull who you actually like since meta is for sweaty whales

Genshin definitely is F2P friendly. At the time that I was playing Genshin, I did pop open nearly every chest and oculus, but there was only Mondstadt and Liyue to churn through. I was largely ambivalent about the storywriting (if I knew there was a skip option I would've used it), but from everything I've heard it has ramped up significantly in Fontaine and the other new place.

@@remyskosm totally fair! I felt the same too, and was hardcore zoomin early game. Its why i really suffered after inazuma where regions and quests started getting super long, and by ekanomia i was so fizzled out i just stopped playing regularly, esp as someone who tries to read basically all dialogue and lore i come across. I only reset properly around sumerus release and got to slow down which made my experience much better, which coupled with your bang on comment about fontaine really solidified genshin as a daily, or at least frequently played game again. @@remyskosm yeah they solve a lot of issues that it had back then like events requiring stamina, now they dont and give a fair ammount of primogems, you can even go right away to sumeru and fontaine, i even went to inazuma cheesing early game sub rank 10 oof with the introduction of HSR they are adding quality of life things that evryone liked in HSR like the daily quests getting completed by doing story etc, that helps too by claiming the rewards with under leveled charaters for friendship for example, they add the player housing at some point too and you can boost friendship there and get materials by just decorating kinda arknights style but easier since theres no resource management.

Personally i don't skip the story but i still got burnt out
Puzzles are meh, in most cases you just repeatedly do it until one of them is correct. It personally got boring for me after a while, especially with Inazuma and later regions where the number of puzzles dramatically increased. You can't even get a common chest without solving a very long puzzle.
World quests are literally all hyperfocused on boring, bland and almost always unlikable NPCs you will probably never see again. There are literally no playable characters in those quests.
Archon quest is good. But after you do it there isn't much to do.

For me, GFL become like this standard or reference point for gacha game. Like it's the only game THAT I KNEW SO FAR for being totally F2P (minus costume gacha). You want certain character? Just use your resource for it (it also have spark-like thing for character, the name is Anchored Construction, guaranteed at 50x pull iirc). META? You can also use non meta unit for fighting enemies with a little bit of difficulty. You want to clear Normal mode and challenge mode both at the same time? Sure, just play the challenge mode and you can get both normal and challenge reward (usually from big major event, they also add Nightmare mode). You on low resource? Just do logistic and done. You want some free stuff? Exploration mode is the answer. For newbie who want to start to play, they give you free T-doll with 4x link with level 70 and some free stuff on you done with mission. Also when you play major event, they also give you some sort of core that you can exchange to the T-doll that you don't have (or you can exchange for an avatar icon lmao)
The only downside for GFL is obviously the bug lmao and not many people play this game. But hey, at least the game is still alive unlike Revived Witch

The appeal of THLW to a Touhou fan, at least for me, is seeing characters who will probably never interact with each other meet and become friends with one another. There's hundreds of characters in Touhou, and they all get SOME time to shine in THLW. When will you ever see Hina, a measly stage 2 boss who never reappears in another game after TH10, get the spotlight in Touhou canon? Despite that, she's had at least two events focused around (or at least named after) her, by the time I stopped playing, anyways. Have you ever thought about what would happen if Hecatia, Yamame, Jo'on, and Yachie interacted together? (For non-Touhou fans, Hecatia is an extra stage boss, the goddess of (a) hell; Yamame is the stage one boss, she's a spider with no story relevance in the only game she appears in; Jo'on is some rich god (I don't know the fighters very well) who only appears in a spin-off; and I really don't know much about Yachie but she, like all the others, is from a different game.) Neither have I, yet THLW made a whole event around that team. TWICE. That's definitely the reason why I played for as long as I did, I only stopped because the powercreep and sticking every single character into a swimsuit got tiring (I don't play gachas too often). You'll do fine as an f2p if you have only one favorite character and save up to pull for them, I just have too many favorites, haha.
tl;dr, THLW is a cool way to see characters who have never interacted in canon Touhou to interact with each other

It has dozens of gameplay content, dozens of enemy types and bosses, there are solo and party raid, and various types of gameplay formats like wall defense and whatnot. There's honestly plenty to go around, at least enough for me to get entertained.
I also quite don't understand the "5" rating on Nikke's longevity.
Also, you're rating these gachas whilst forgoing some of the most important things: Lore/worldbuilding, story/plot/writing, and music.

    • @remyskosm

For me, I found most of the different gameplay formats beyond the story mode to be a chore, which, in turn, led to the 5 rating for longevity.
All the criteria you mentioned are valid metrics for rating, but consider that gacha games are mostly mobile games. I don't have the stats, but I'd wager good money that a majority of players skip stories whenever possible, and have their phones ln mute. I really don't believe that they are grading parameters that would affect most players. That said, pretty much every gacha I've played has had servicable osts at the very least, so the overall ratings wouldn't shift around much at all with regards to that.

Two games I would like to mention: Dragalia Lost and Cookie Run Kingdom.
Dragalia Lost ended service more than a year ago, but I still remember it as one of, if not the best gacha game I've ever played. Great gameplay, variety, events, many characters and dragons each with an small story that contextualizes their presence and/or gives them character development and lots of quick and easy daily quest that could help you upgrade almost any character to make them viable. Not to mention it was super generous and had a bunch of collabs (I think the last one was Persona 5), I never needed to pull out my wallet to get many cool adventures and dragons I wanted. It had so many things that I can't actually say it all here. There are videos that explain it better.
Meanwhile, Cookie Run Kingdom is still going to this day. Despite becoming more pushy towards paying, the game is still really F2P friendly, giving you more gems the better you get in modes like arena or guild battles. You also get gems at a steady pace by playing story mode and events. The characters, despite not sounding interesting because they're gingerbread cookies, are actually pretty cool (in most cases). If I had to point out some issues, it would be that grinding gets pretty slow on higher level characters, the gameplay being pretty generic and powercreep being a real problem, to the point of some bosses being basically unbeatable without the proper line up (it's not actually hard to unlock characters, but leveling them up can be quite tedious).

And hey, gotta say. neat anime list (P.E.K.K.A is an Shoujo protagonist, fight me); just want to share a few more:
    - Snowbreak Containment zone: Starts slow, and their atmosphere feels simple, but is a Pve shooter if you're curious (Marian best girl)
    - Transformers Erath wars: Anime girls? How about a raging spider for a change... May have the best/worst gatcha system in where your gatcha currency is virtually useless by how awful rates are, yet you will get 3/4 star (5 stars are on a league on their own) bots, all by just playing regularly; gameplay is Backyard monsters (Father of Clash of clans)
    - Limbus Company: Haven't felt such a "visceral" gatcha game like that, is like a indie game on steam... Wait
    - Blue Archive: I mean, you have Aru's unofficial theme on the intro, so you know the deal: Awful gatcha but generous rewards, and overflowing charisma amongst story, characters and even enemies like Perorozila
    - Since Honkai Impact 3rd was mentioned already, then try Aether Gazer... less taxing device wise, no orb shenanigans like PGR if you're not fan of it, and character design is exquisite
    Have fun

Its my favorite gacha rn, the story on chapter one is kinda eh but in the end of 2 it gets really good, IMO the one with most potential. The gacha is ok-good, so far i got all characters i wanted. The combat is turn based, and is actually pretty fun. The mechanics are simple, but still fun and the game requires you to use them against the harder content. Designs on this game are crazy good, and actually diverse. I've never really cared much about diversity until i played this game. Overall a 9/10, but rn i think FGO> because Reverse doesnt have a lot of replayability and the story is not even 3% as progressed as FGO.

not a bad video, but damn Arknights being reproached for stat check is kinda insane ngl
The game is very very hard but it has nothing to do with stats, in fact most guides use very weak units not even E2. this is very common in the community for players to think a stage is impossible with all the most meta units in the game and then act surprised when a very good niche player clear it with units that aren't even promoted or leveled up.
It's more about understanding the enemies and reacting with the right characters for any given sitation than any kind of stat check. Tbh lvl aren't even that important, usually it's almost considered a waste of ressources to bring your units to lvl max

I'm a little sad about how Lord of Heroes got treated because it is currently an obsession of mine. I love the story and how every single mechanic has an actual in-universe reason to exist. For pity, you get the banner char on your 90th summon, though I never needed that much to get what I want yet. That said, linkstones are p scarce, but they give you 10 free 5s (over time, they are cummulative login rewards) along with several starter chars and I don't think you actually *need* the new releases to do the stories (I'm still using the starter chars on Extreme).
The game, however, is incredibly grindy. It takes a lot of exp to level up, plus ascension mats, plus promotion that resets the level to 0, so you always need energy. The energy isn't really a problem; they give a lot of free energy via dailies or weekly rewards. The main issue is the time. Skip tickets are paid, so if you're f2p, sometimes it takes hours to use all your energy, which I'm sure some people will dislike.
I'm not delusional enough to think LoH is UR or even SSR worthy really, but I think it deserves more than a C at least.

21:22 since Noone is talking about illusion Connect, ill share my experience in Illusion Connect since from release of the game
Gameplay wise: It's like a game of chess. Where you can do different strategies on with different characters you have. Fast game, playing the long game till the timer goes off or balanced.
As you start the match you have to quickly placed down your char to do their Special skill
Let's say I placed down my single target assassin but my enemy placed down a shielder to tanked that dmg and I countered with this character to that character then he countered with his character to that character so on and forth
But you need a lot of characters and equipment inorder to do that
Longevity: I thought this game will go longer since they giving away a bunch of stuff like UR Equipment and ingame currency in their events but nonetheless the game is shut down, reason? I forgot what's true reason I'll edit this when I rmb or research
No paypigging: oh boy, so as much the game gives you generously amount of freebies but midgame grind is sucks a F2p. Even you have perfect characters to counter that but boss will quickly kill your character even you did everything to survive or trying to killing the boss with your remaining units but no avail bc there's a time limit so you pretty much grind their mats and exp for around month or 2 just to get past that level and oh it get worse so most F2p only have got 3 stars characters completed deck while Whales got fullly 6 star characters with that same F2p completed deck so even you have a characters to counter those but you didn't enough dmg or sustain against those whales in 1v1, 3v3 and guild war so you need a wallet just keep drawing the same characters just been in top of the leaderboard
If I were to score this then I'll say
Core gameplay:9, it's something new to the gacha genre and it's fun in early game
Longevity: I would say 6 or 7 as much they did 2 anime collabs but the mid game grind is too much for F2p players
No paypigging:5 pvp, pve you need your characters to be 6 stars inorder to be effective

I only play two Gacha Games frequently as of now, which is FGO and Arknights. It’s not like I hate the others, I just have less time since I also play other games and well, working adult life lmao
Personally though my main gripe with Arknights is not actually the difficulty, I like using my brain. But its the story… kinda. So this is an unpopular opinion, but like, yeah the story’s nice and the lore is interesting. But its so hard to actually read through it when it feels too long and isn’t as engaging, which I find very weird because I read visual novels and books! I guess its also because the units I like barely have anything to do with the story. That’s also why I unironically prefer the IS2 and IS3 stories- I love Mizuki and Phantom. Yet in the main story, not much of my favorite units are even relevant. It’s always the girlbosses. FGO has this same problem but at least I’m more attached to the franchise.
Still, I love Arknights, and while I’m sad you didn’t put it at UR, I understand your points.

I respect your thoughts and all but... man, seeing FEH as the literal top tier hurts my soul. And I say that as someone who used to be *really* into feh back when book 2 was new.

It seems to be running respectable numbers. Mostly it just comes down to me being fairly picky on top of not being able to play every major gacha.

Personally, I don't consider Clash Royale as a gach game, as I feel like the "gacha" loop isn't as big as the "waifu gacha" games.
Just curious, what is your opinion on Reverse:1999, controversial take, but I've been really burnt out from trying to enjoy the game, although it's the new hit of the gacha games, I just don't find myself enjoying it, especially when compared to games like Arknights or KanColle.
Illusion Connect is just goated taste, I remember getting Miyuki before it shut down, I missed that game, I still couldn't find a gacha game like it.
Great list with detailed explanation of each game, looking forward to more videos like this.

Calling Clash Royale a gacha was a little tongue-in-cheek, where I wouldn't normally, but I saw it on a different tier list, so why not.
I haven't played Reverse:1999, though it does look like a game I wouldn't mind picking up. That said, it's probably a common experience among gacha players: picking something up for a quick fix--often with launch or beginner rewards and incentives--and then dropping it after burning out from the core gameplay. I figure that most people will get 3 or 4 gacha games they love and come back to, whereas the rest either get put on the backburner or get uninstalled.
The current video being cooked up is a video essay on Smash, and I'm probably going to move the small commentary videos to a separate channel for consistency.

I'm curious as to what content was added that could cause such a meteoric rise in rating, but I'll check it out if time permits.
