Colt when I got my 260VU they sold all 5 in less than a minute. I was trying many times before not being able to click fast enough. I have the 260VU now for a few weeks and love it. I am very pleased with it. I love AudioScape! Good quality stuff and Trevor is a great guy over there. Very helpful.
I had the OG DBX 160's that i bought from the guy from The Knack and was my absolute favorite comp for many recordings, glad to see some recreating an amazing unit
wow...everyone always raves about the dbx on bass guitar, but that thing on snare drum is just absolutely SICK!!!!! Also, for some reason, I feel like I just gotta mention that your video captures, tack focus, color grading and skin tones are just as sick...I mostly watch TH-cam in full screen on my 27" 5K imac, and your videos look absolutely amazing!
Every time I hear your compression videos, my plugins get jealous 😅 the tone and character is usually there, but that transient emphasis on analog compression is so nice
Aloha Colt, we at BackLit Buddha Studios on Maui have been waiting for this video since you gave us the sneak peek at last year’s NAMM. We got lucky enough to grab one a couple of weeks ago, and there’s nothing it can’t do. Next time you get to Maui come by for tacos and some studio geekery!
Dude, when I was recording at Power Station in New York, They had every compressor available from under the sun. Most of the time they would default to the 160's! In fact, when they sold the studio to Avitar, They had a liquidation sale and II bought the last 165 that they had... I still have it. I would love to own a pair of 160's. I may just put an order in for them, soon. Great video!
Even with the waves/ua version, I honestly never gave it a fair shake 'til I saw videos like this recently showcasing the drum sound. I've been sleeping on this thing too long! lol
IIRC, the reason there hasn't been many attempts to make clones/replicas of the 160 is because the original silver can VCAs hasn't been produced since the 70's, and it's supposed to take a lot of manual labor to build them. Factor in that you need some NOS transistors to recreate them and you start to understand why no one has tried to make it into a product that has to bring in more money than it took to design and build. Also, the original units has been quite cheap on the second-hand market up until recently, so any modern clone/recreation would have to be in the same price range. They are gettin really pricey nowadays though. A unit in excellent condition was sold recently on Reverb for $3.200, but the average price is around $1.500 (so about the same as the AudioScape 260 VU).
Be sure to follow them on Instagram, every Wednesday and Saturday they announce what’s going up on the website for sale that night. Create your account on the website and already enter your payment details so you’re on the site and logged in and ready to go when the drop goes live. That’s the best way to get one.
160 VU puts a point on the attack transient like no other . Mine are sitting in a rack getting dusty unpatched :( this was a great reminder just how good they make the drums poke out
surprised at how good it sounds on vocals. I can hear that point where it makes vocals spitty sounding, but right before that, it sounds really smooth.
Looks like our AudioScape stock issues are a thing of the past - now they got almost everything up for sale / in stock! I had to prowl the site 2x/week for like a year to finally snag my opto comp last year!
They finally moved into their new (and much bigger) facility this past year so I'm sure that's huge for their production. I'm actually going to go see them here soon and check out the new place.
This sounds awesome. Thanks for sharing. I’ve been looking at their 500 series stuff for my first dive into analog outboard gear. Can you recommend a 500 series compressor, primarily for vocals? Love the channel! Thanks for all you do here.
Very nice, sadly I cannot find a distributer here in the EU 😪 And import the gear would be way too expensive for me... Anyway, this AudioScape sounds lovely. Thank you Colt for your nice videos
You might want to reach out to AS. They offer great service and might be able to work with you directly. You would still have to be able win the weekly lottery, however. And that’s actually part of the fun!
Does anyone know why the DBX 160 vu amplifies certain transients and s,z,sh,p,k,t sounds in vocals!? is the attack too slow for hard rap vocals? (Dr.Dre used this comp to track vocals for Eminem, D12, G-Unit, Snoop, The Game, etc.) The track doesn't look more balanced after compression, but certain peaks stand out strongly. The track still looks pretty dynamic after compression.
I wish you could get this kind of gear here in Kazakhstan, sadly it will never happen and importing is astronomically expensive. Great video, I will live vicariously through your reviews 😂
The original 160 (vu) had a sound unlike any other dbx model. I know the Audioscape 260 VI will sound great, but does it have “the sound” and character of the original?? Colt, have you logged much time on an original dbx 160?
I’ve only used the original one 60 VU, maybe a dozen times, and haven’t had one in my room personally. However, this one gives me all the same vibes. I would like to put it next to a vintage one at sometime.
This is by far one of the best compressors I have heard from Demo !! ... Unfortunately they are sold out, can anyone suggest me something similar in a 500 series format, if not a rack also would do.
@@ColtCapperrune I'm thinking more from a technical standpoint or are you not going to use the Dolby Atmos Bridge and run the renderer on a second machine instead?
ya know... everything you mix on this channel is practically done when you get it. Would love to actually see you work on a real song with real issues. I mean I get it, most Nashvillians have access to solid engineers and getting clean AF tracks to send to mixing, but still. Most of us aren't sent tracks that close to being finished or just that easy to work with.
Our set ups are completely opposite. I have everything you have in software. Trippy world, my cousin said stay in software you won't have to worry about the repair bills.
I've had mine for about a month now - it's so good! LOVE the AudioScape guys!
can u run some rap vocals for me through your audioscape 260vu?

Pumped you were able to get one!

My absolute fav type of comp for kick, snare and toms. It just has that perfect pop/smack
That snare sound is SO SATISFYING! UGH!!!!!
Woah..... You just sold me on this. Looks like I snagged the last one tonight. Shows sold out as soon as my order was complete. Pumped!
Congrats!!!!
Love this on snare! Classic use case for it, it makes the snare drum cartoon-like in the best way possible, almost too perfect to be real.
Yes it does!!

Thank goodness for Audioscape!
It’s sounds sweet, also anything with VUs instantly grabs my attention. 😁👀
SAME! 😂
I was fortunate enough to snag one awhile back and use it every single session...
Every time I hear your compression videos, my plugins get jealous 😅 the tone and character is usually there, but that transient emphasis on analog compression is so nice
It’s a different thing. No doubt

Hi Colt,
Greetings from Australia!
We had some of the original dbx160's in the FOH gear I worked with.

Sounds snappy!
I dig it!!
@@ColtCapperrune could you compare the original vs this=? I am in the hunt for all DBX 160, 162 and 165.

I’ve really liked it so far. I’ve used it on voice and it’s pretty easy to use.

the UA plugin emulation of this is amazing. having the hardware sounds really, really good. Now I have to have one, but they are out of stock. :(

It’s dope!! Thanks for watching!
They make great boxes. Have a few myself. Wish they would make a 670 though. But I have a feeling that might be in the works.
A 670 would be dope!
Next on my list!
Do you remember what mic(s) you used to record the acoustic guitar you have in this video?

I have 2 vintage dbx compressors. But I use the emulations, of which there are several out there.
which plugins would u say is the closest sounding?
Nice, it brings the tracks into FOCUS in a very musical and just right kind of way...
No doubt!
I have one and use joe every session❤
Oh my that looks delicious 😅

They are doing a drop of them tonight! Towards the end of the video, I explain the best way to get your hands on one
@@ColtCapperrune Thx Colt, for you quick reply. I have done it already like you have mentioned. Hoping to lay hands on one :)
Colt, can you please give me your take on the RMS button?
To be honest with you, I’ve never even played with it. Let me mess around with it and get back to you.
Can you do a review on the reftones mixcubes
How do you plan to integrate your analog hardware when you switch to Atmos?
All exactly the same, minus the mix bus
@@ColtCapperrune I'm thinking more from a technical standpoint or are you not going to use the Dolby Atmos Bridge and run the renderer on a second machine instead?
Would this work goood on hip hop style vocals
If it has the character you were looking for. It is a very specific sound. But I’ll like it on vocals.
I use an arthritis 165 after an overloud 1176... this chain is in all my aux bus drums
It's already sold out! 😄😄
They are doing a drop tonight!
How does the 160 compare to the 165?
The 165 is actually more aggressive and saturated (in if own unique way). Both are super sick!
Uff
Is it dual mono?
It is
Could be an alternative to my api 2500 parallel idea

I like it on the drums, but I'm not a huge fan on the other sources. I'm also not a pro audio engineer lol. Great video though.
nobody has this running on rap vocals 😢
Wait u have a distressor lol no fair!! 🤣
That singer reminds me of a country version of puddle of mud.

Audioscape doing the “Always Sold Out / Only 4 units in stock once a month at 8pm on a Tuesday” is shenanigans.
Shenanigans?? Haha. I think more like it’s as fast as they can build them 🤷🏻♂️

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA……. no 😂
