I've had both, and original vintage. Sold the Stam. The Stam sounds nice enough but the the QR on anything Audioscape is on another level, in my opinion of course.
There is NO competition. We ordered something from STAM years ago, it never showed up. We Finally got our money back. We bought an Audio-Scape Opto Comp. The meter got stuck. Audio-Scape fixed the issue, and sent the unit back as good as new. If, you want to buy great sounding clones, just get in touch with Audio-Scape. Great company. STAM idk. I'll stay with Audio-Scape.
Just watched another video about on Stam Audio's version of the 1178 (SA-78+). Super cool to see this video pop up on my feed not even a day later haha. Great video Colt!!
That's what I use (1978). I also use a pair of Audioscape V3A's and a GBus Comp. Love the Drawmer. Probably would have gone with the Audioscape if it would have been available back then...I will add the AS78 someday... Looking at the 260VA next though.
I'm an Audio-Scape junkie. I've got a pair of their 76f's, the 260VU, this AD78 and I'm awaiting shipment of my pair of EPQ's. There isn't much they make that I _don't_ plan on or would like to buy. Next I'd like to get a pair of their "mids" EPQ's, their 12 spring reverb unit, their "LA2A" and I nearly jumped off my seat when I saw the pair of "LA3A" style levelers in their rack at NAMM.
The AS78 is awesome, as are the 260 and the 1176 Bluestripe replicas. I wish they had parallel knobs like the AS78. I really like every AudioScape product I have purchased, and they are a very dependable group who really strive to deliver.
Shootout. Please. Add the Serpent in that mix as well. I have that one thanks to you :) I also have a pair of fredenstein artistic comps plus (FET) and on drums for the price I actually love them. That parallel mix knob is where it’s at!
Drum buss shoot out please!!! 👊🏽💜👍🏽 Seriously considering the Audioscape 260vu right now. I do have two UA6176’s with the stereo connector box for stereo 1176’s. But now you have me thinking the AS78. Thanks.
Colt, Do a shoot out I like see what your opinion is. I have both the 260VU and the AS78 and for me it depends on the song. You may have already tried this, put the AS78 on your master out.
Between their unreliable customer support, and hit or miss build quality, you will never see a piece of stam gear on this channel, no matter how much they offered to pay me.
I have done that in the past if I want to use the same piece of hardware on multiple things inside the same song. But traditionally, I’m just using it on whatever I think is the best use case for each particular song in real time.
Was looking at Stam due to features on their gear, but I'm hearing more pain points about the WAIT for orders but also lacking customer service for product defects, etc. so I'm taking another look at Audio Scape instead. Cheers, man!
I am still waiting for my 3-unit Stam Audio order for about a year ago. In meantime I have bought 5 units from Audio-scape. Stam Audio is about to be thing of the past for me.
@@ColtCapperrune Yeah. To bad they were not separated. If it were I guess it would not be a 1178 remake. It already has a comp blend knob that is not part of the original.
Great video! Any thoughts on using the AS78 as an 1176 replacement for lead vocals? Would you still use a traditional 1176? If so, why? Thanks! Also, would love a drum bus compressor shootout! 🤘
So Colt. Gotta ask. You said this was going to be your parallel drum bus comp now. Does this mean you prefer it to the 260VU? I know that previously got your nod in the same role. I already own a Drawmer 1978 FET comp that is my parallel drum processor and was considering the 260VU as an alternative flavor. The AS78 appeals to me, but since I already have the 1978, I wasn't considering it as much. Any advice? Thanks!
@@ColtCapperrune great video and a very interesting compressor. I have a few Black Lion compressors and they have a Mix Knob. It's great using the mix when recording especially with the Bluey Unit you can give your recording as much grit as you want the recording to have.
@@ColtCapperrune You'r the only one who hasn't done that ... everyone does it (on youtube) to the point that I thought the gears had become as obsolete as the tape machine
I'd watch out. This is a dishonest and deceptive company. Some people got previous Audioscape units that had issues like significantly mismatching levels on L/R. I posted a polite comment about it, asking if they will stand by the units and resolve the issue if it's mis-matched, and I gave an example of a unit I was concerned about. Their response was to perma-ban me and hide the comment. You never know how many other peoples comments they have shadow banned. I was shocked by what they did. It was so unprofessional.
I’m calling BS. I have personally dealt with their customer service on 1 of my 2 EQP’s that had a minor issue when I got it. They paid to have my unit shipped back to them, replaced the power transformer, amp board output transformer, and bypass switch, then paid to ship it back to me. All free of charge. They also keep all their measurements on file and made sure I had a matched pair of EQPs despite buying them at different times. This is the experience I have heard echoed on so many forums. I wouldn’t be surprised if they show up here asking you where you saw that so they could fix the units in question. I also own a D Comp, Opto, and 76D, with the build quality on all being incredible.
I’ve been a user for years, and later became friends with them. I now have 6 pieces of theirs, with zero issues. They work hard, and take pride in their work. So I have a VERY hard time believing this. Doesn’t make it easier to believe coming from an account that is random letters and numbers.
We LOVE all of our Audioscape gear
Same here!
We all love Lauten mics just as much !!!
WOULD LOVE TO TRY A LAUTEN MIC 😭
Come on Colt! Of course, do the drum bus shoot-out!
So funny to see the competition between Audioscape and Stam
"completion is good for us..."
I've had both, and original vintage. Sold the Stam. The Stam sounds nice enough but the the QR on anything Audioscape is on another level, in my opinion of course.

the laughter at "All buttons in" priceless ;)
It’s not very often a piece of gear gives me enough joy to literally make me laugh lol
That's a go-to drum setting right there and the mix knob makes it so easy!

Another unit to consider is the VERY underrated Drawmer 1978, which has killer sound and features and is a pretty good price too.

a comparison between this and the 260vu would be sooo dope
you're "pumped" about it... haha, i get it :D

Colt, I got the AS78 the first drop by email invite and now had it for awhile now. I love it!
Amazing!!
Yes to the drum bus comp shootout please.
Great review as always, Colt !!!
I've had one for about a month and it's great! LIke you said the HPF and Mix control really set this apart! Audio Scape is great!!
Fun tip, 4+20 ratio buttons give the exact same effect as all-buttons in, and it’s much easier to do with one hand.
I also own one and love it except it's extremely hard to recall due to the design of knobs...
SHOOTOUT please!
Tubetech vs. 260 VU vs. AS78
It’s coming 🤘🏻😜🤘🏻
@@ColtCapperrunethrow in the Serpent just for good measure maybe?

Colt, I also got the Empirical Labs pump and love that one too. I like to know when you get yours and your take on it.
I’m trying to get a pair of them! But they have proven hard to acquire
Drummers thank you for the panning 😁
Have you reviewed the D Comp or the V Comp? 😁 I would love a comparison with the TG1 and the STA Level against their Audioscape counterparts.
Yeah Stam Audio just came out with their own version of the 1178.
Impressive!!

I wish it came in an LA2A finish. Also, why such sharp chassis edges all the time? Love Audioscape but their chassis edges need a touch of roundness.
Love your reviews man!
hey Colt, have you ever tried a Wes Audio NG76? if so, which would you pick between - two of them or one AS78? seems like a hard pick imo haha

Can you do a Review on your v-comp+ ?
With the hpf and blend knob, would this be a candidate for 2bus? Or still too aggressive and grabby?
Could you film an update on your main room?
Definitely a shootout
There's nothing like analog compression. My goodness!
Sometimes I use the AS78 for 2 separate tracks. I just have to play with it to get it the way I want
