Soo, I’m hoping the rest of these “tear down” videos actually show the “tear down” of the vehicle. It’s interesting to see the components and all, but I definitely was hoping for more of a how-to or even a walkthrough of the components and how they fit together (need to pull these hoses to get to this component A which you have to remove before pulling on component B) etc.
I'm 12/10 excited for this!!!

The pre-2020 500e is a compliance car made to satisfy a manufacturer's government requirements to have an electric car available in their range of models. The battery pack very likely was shaped to fit a standard Fiat 500's chassis so that they didn't need to build a whole new chassis. You can see the dividing lines in the top where the battery tray can fit into the car's existing exhaust and fuel tank recesses.
The chassis and interior of the 2020 500e that was just released was probably custom designed for electrical use. The battery pack in that car should be much better proportioned. It's already much more powerful with a 320 km/199 mile range and fast charging support.
I hope that one makes it to North America, but built in Europe and not in Mexico.

It’s interesting to look at how and where the damage is and try to put together exactly how that happened.
On another note, do you need to take any safety precautions with this disassembly taking place inside of your garage? That’s a lot of amperage that could (potentially) have damaged wires, insulation, or any thing else.

I thought about it. But, the better plan is to use up my current battery & then rebuild it with the higher capacity cells that add 50 - 100% more range. And the old battery becomes a battery backup for the house.

well its a little concerning that the airbags didnt go off , leads me to believe that maybe the car didnt roll, if it did well then someone got a really bad headache

Both the 2017-on BMW i3 & VW e-golf use the same size cells as the 500e, but with 50% higher capacity. In theory, if one could cost effectively acquire those cells, one should be able to rebuild the Fiat 500e pack as a 36kWh. Ep #7 will be the battery teardown edition, coming late this year. Cheers,

Second thing is a question, will you do converting to DC fast charging? If you plan to do it, pls do separate step by step videos about that. Thanks, I appreciate the comment. This my first Teardown & EV conversion project. Depending on how successful it is, will determine how to proceed. DC fast charging is an open option. Cost effectively it would make better sense for the donor powertrain car to already have it integrated. The next teardown car surly will. But, first things first.

I sold it to him for way less than it was worth. I bought it a couple years ago and never got around to working on it. He told me he was interested and I was happy to get it off my lawn 😁
There will always be more projects. I hope to do teardowns on several EV's & at least 4 conversions.
can you use standard odb2 bluetooth reader? or do you need special cable for connecting car 'odb2 port'

Do you know if the 500e control arms are different from the 500? I've got a "clunk" when I get on and off the throttle under 30mph on my 500e. I can't decide if it's CV joint play or control arm joint play. The motor mounts SEEM to be okay.
I've got suspension play up from just hitting small bumps, too, sounds like it's coming from the top hat bushings. Going to just replace the front suspension completely but I don't know about the control arms.
If the control arms are different, the 500e is using "abarth" parts. Only the springs & shocks are 500e specific, due to unique weight distribution. Sounds like a bushing is bad or maybe something is just a tiny bit loose.
It’s been awhile, but are you still driving your other Fiat? If so any issues with LCD cluster? Mine just started going out. Blank on startup up but then comes on. It’s very hot in my garage, thought maybe it had something to do with it because it seems to come back on when the cabin cools down but just guessing, any thoughts?

For me, I have about 12 cars on my mind. I am planning on doing at least four. A classic car, a light weight sports car, a Kei van, & an exotic. This particular powertrain is setup for F/FWD or Mid/RWD layouts due to the transaxle.
Hello. I have a 2015 E and I noticed this “knocking” what would be similar to a lose motor mount in a ICE vehicle. It knocks out hen accelerating and again when coming off the gas at lower speeds. I can’t find anything online to remedy this issue. As in where I can tighten down a motor mount situation. Could you offer any advice on this since you’ve done a full tear down? Thank you.

@@robertpryor7225 I've thought about moving the drivetrain to rear, but this will need a custom design battery pack as well and also the software is a concern too.

up to how many miles do the batteries last.....thinking of buying a 500e....just want to have an idea of what mileage is still safe
The battery cell chemistry that this car uses should "last" a human lifetime or more. What does not "last" is the capacity of which each cell can hold. With each charge, there's a trace amount of capacity loss. It may be undetectable for years, or if the battery was abused, it may show up much sooner. There's an infinite amount of variables that a "user" can do to sustain or degrade a battery's capacity.
If you can scan a car using "AlfaOBD" before you buy it to check the "health status of the battery" would be the only reliable way. Adjust the offer price accordingly. I have videos on this procedure on the channel.
I would love to see how it performs with a battery upgrade.
I'm surprised that rolled, 500e looks tall but the battery should give it low center of gravity.

can the batteries be rebuilt and replaced in these cars or is there software preventing it?

What specific brand/model of the ODBII adapter do you use? As my experience, 500e has its own proprietary protocol and does not follow the common ODBII standard.
There are two ways: 1. pay through the nose for a FCA wiTech diagnostic tool, or 2. use AlfaOBD and a ELM327 adapter.

@@EleTruk I'm sincere. I got my 500e "check engine lights on" while using a generic Bluetooth OBD2 adapter, but my 2012 Volt is totally fine with the same adapter. Therefore, I was really curious about what specific type of OBD2 that you can successfully retrieve many information from 500e ECU.

Ep #3 covers the interior. The seats are heavy beasts. Would have to be shipped on a pallet. Might be able to remove just the "skins". Ep #4 or #5 will be detailed teardowns of various components.
Why was this 500 scrapped? In Rome this is how cars look. Bad things happens to your car when parked in 1'st century narrow passageway!
Isn't that interesting? At 14:00, he says that there are about 7 or 8 quarts of fluid in the liquid-cooled battery. That's as much blood as my body holds. I also receive/give electrical impulses throughout myself. Hey, when I'm dead, somebody is going to take apart me.
You should swap battery packs with your Carr.

In all fairness, the 1st gen Fiat 500e is pretty solid. A simple EV if you will. Lot's of old school buttons instead of crappy touchscreens. You have to buy direct from the U.S. for the best deals.
@@theevolvingworld I will and I will ascertain what kind of exsanguination does my country customs requiere of mere mortals wanting to liberate from the State owned oil reseller! Their luxuries ranging from janitors doing tele-work to refinery personal standing idle since the late 1980´s when the refinery stoped refining the early fuel injected cars and carbureted ones with their poor and damaging product, all of which account for 35% of the cost of fuel here...be as it may, I am a quick learner and I will try to become savvy at this car. I love the style of Fiat and we have had some of their products since the Fiat 850 Special passing to the Uno and then a Punto SLX.

Have you flushed the coolant in your Fiat 500e?
The manufacturer recommends replacing at every 150,000 miles. I say, don't mess with it. Why? Because the coolant has an easy life in an EV. All it does is remove some mild heat out of the battery pack & motor in a sealed system. Unlike, in an ICE where it has to remove enormous amount of heat in a much harsher environment with plenty of sources of contamination to occur. Which in turn, necessitates flushing the coolant. Save your money and enjoy the car!
My 500e is 8 years old with 48k. I trust your advice and I’ll hold off on trying to flush the system. I appreciate your reply and all your wonderful information! Thanks so much!

Usually "limited power" or "turtle mode" only comes on while at around 3-5% SOC or below. At least, that's the only time I've ever seen it. Charging it up usually clears it & restores full power.

Yes, & I've accumulated quite a collection. That particular part has scrapes & a crack. It's also glued to the hatch. It's free, if you want the whole hatch.

@@theevolvingworld thank you for the reply and a chance to do business. i really like the fiat 500E. i also heard the ac compressor has another function when charging the car it kicks on to cool the coolant to cool the batterys during hot 100 degree weather. That's what chystler mechanic told me. and why check engine light comes on. i charge at night and there is no problem.

I am open to selling them, but as a complete set of four w/ tires. Could make a nice second set for winter. All are: functional, have over 50% of tread, & hold air. There are some scrapes on the outer edges of a couple of them (that could be filed or ground out).
Hey, change of plans. I've got a bunch of parts available on eBay. One Rear wheel & one front. The other two were to scraped up.
Dude most people must have had to throw up in the bathroom with all the movement with your camera work. Stay still instead of moving round and round with no particular aim in what you are doing. No wonder you have only 133 likes.
When replacing the charging socket and cable, is the cord accessible without removing the battery? The socket broke and I have the entire cable, but can’t find information on replacing the entire cable, but can find just swapping the socket. Thanks
Replacing the the J1772 connector with the cord assembly is a straight forward job. I believe I show the removal in a later episode. It runs along the right side from the filler port to the charger which is located under the hood & above the Motor on the right side. All batteries stay put.
1. Fully disconnect the 12v battery - this shuts the car completely off.
2. Jack the car up & secure on jackstands.
3. Remove right rear wheel.
4. Remove wheel well cover plate that covers the hidden part of the J1772 connector.
5. Remove the fasteners that hold in the connector & then the connector pushes thru.
6. There are several (like 20) plastic cable-tie w/ plugs that you will have to pull and/or cut one by one, freeing up the cord.
7. Once you get to the front, the right front wheel can come off for easier access. If you haven't already unplug it from the charger. That end will have to come down to finish. It's tight with lot's of those plastic cable ties everywhere. Wear long sleeves & gloves.
8. Installation is reverse of removal. Those factory cable-tie & plug mounts should be available. But, if you can't get them, expect to substitute with stock cable-ties and/or wire.
