Art historian here; it's very unlikely this is depicting the assassination of Cesar, as all depictions of Cesar's assassination show him standing, as well as the fact that if you look at the painting closely you can see this is a battle, with multiple people fighting each other, where as in the case of Cesar's assassination, everyone was attacking only one man: Cesar himself.

Eren being chained to the pole in the center of the room also could be read as representing him being locked to the paths, there's definitely some parallel between Eren being chained up in this episode and then being chained in Ymir's realm in the final season.

@@flickcore I've thought more about this comment I left since the finale and I honestly think there's something to it. Eren is tied to the paths. which are always represented by this infinite plane with one point reaching skyward and then branching out. I do actually believe that it's an intentional parallel with the end of Eren's story. In this scene we see that the Military of Paradis is against Eren, wishing for him to be eliminated, and his friends manage to save him. In the Finale we see the reversal of the situation, the Military is on Eren's side, and his friends have to take him out.
If you look at the ceiling painting, it also shows what appears to be a Paradis rendition of the assassination of Caesar. Which I think speaks for itself in its relationship to Eren in the Finale.

In the full version of the the second op there is a part with german lyrics "Die Freihheit oder der Tod.Die beiden sind Zwillinge." Which translates to "Freedom or death. They are twins." I think the symbolism there with the black and white bird is obvious. Also,it could be foreshadowing to Eren and Zeke.Erens goal being to achieve ""freedom"" and Zeke wanting to just let the eldians die. They kind of are twins in a way.(not literally of course)

Linked Horizon released a song from Petra's perspective, called "Souyoku no Hikari", which might shed some light on the question of the black and white birds. The chorus goes something like: "Small feathers, one by one, come together and form a white wing. Small lives, one by one, are lost and leave behind a black wing." From that, it would seem that the Wings of Freedom might dually represent those who have given their lives in the the struggle for freedom and those who remain alive to continue the struggle. Perhaps this opening is using similar symbolism in the black and white birds that the Wings of Freedom turn into.

That does make sense when you think about it, the Survey Corps goes out into these dangerous territories and not all of the people that left will ever come back to the cities to see their loved ones because they go out and fight so that if they don't return then their loved ones can live an extra day or two.
Plus being a scout is a dangerous job know that once you set foot outside the walls then you are either gonna survive but knowing that each time you leave could be your last or you are gonna get eaten by a Titan but knowing your sacrifice will mean one step closer to reclaiming what was lost.

I don't know if you mentioned it in your video but The Military Police have no intention of actually dissecting Eren. Rod Reiss knows that he holds the founding titan so he's ordered the military police to gain custody of him. The only reason Premier Zackary didn't give custody to the MPs is because we know how much he hates the MPs and upper class. He'd take any excuse possible to not give them what they want. Regardless, when they return from the 57th expedition, Rod Reiss flexes his power again by trying to arrest Erwin and thus regain the titan that way however, that's interrupted by the female titan appearing in Stohess, The reveal that the walls are made up of colossal titans as well as titans appearing from Ragako.
This allowed Erwin and The Survey Corp to maintain custody of Eren while they check if Wall Rose has actually been breached however, Rod Reiss makes sure to send Military Police with the Scouts to ensure Eren's safety. This is why so many MPs help with Eren's rescue at the end of season 2. Then season 3 is when Rod finally gets the chance to recapture Eren and dissolve the Survey Corp. But keep in mind that all of this happens over the course of 3 months. The end of the 57th expedition to the end of season 2 happens in under a week so it's not like Rod's been twiddling his thumbs. He's been actively trying to get his hands on Eren from the beginning.

I mean look at the speech Reiner was saying to his family in early Season 4 that the people on Paradise were the opposite of devils

    • @sor3999
      @sor3999 ปีที่แล้ว +9

You have it completely mixed up. Annie is the one that just wants to go home. And Reiner is absolutely not conflicted. He wants to "prove himself" as a warrior. It isn't until just before his reveal to Eren that he starts to feel conflicted. We get explicit scenes of him needing to remind himself that he's not a "solider", but a "warrior" and he needs to remember his mission when he risks his life to to save one of them in the tower with the cannon. Bertholdt is characterized over and over as someone who doesn't take initiative and does what he's told and the person telling him is Reiner who takes lead on the mission.

I figured that Bertholdt was least willing to fight his friends where Reiner was pushing them. Reiner pushed them after Marcels death and again when he revealed their identities with Bertholdt saying “we’re doing this now?”
After that point Reiner is seriously split on his personality because he’s so driven, and that drive is literally working both ways within him which is splitting him apart. After that point however, Bertholdt has started down a path he can’t go back on and must see the mission through or else they’ll likely be captured and maybe eaten in Paradis and with Reiner so broken, Betty now has to be the one to drive them to continue with the mission. Not to mention Annie is captured and he won’t get to see her again if he fails

As a German myself, let me expand a little on the german themes. It's not only a matter of music (Flügel der Freiheit, Vogel im Käfig). A LOT of things in this show are somewhat german. Almost all characters have very, very typical german names (Reiner, Bertolt, Hannes, Hannah, Franz etc.) as well as the overwhelming amount of characters with these names having blonde hair (stereotypically a german trait). There are exceptions of course, very fittingly Mikasa and Levi are not typical german names, but it is worth noting that “Ackerman” is. Locations also commonly have german names “Trost” is german for comfort, “Paradis” is german for (not surprisingly) paradise and the whole concept of a town within walls was inspired by “Nördlingen”, a german city (look up the pictures, so cool!). This could also be a nod to the DDR and german history as we know AoT does not shy away from very clearly depicting german history as seen with how Eldians in Marley get treated like Jews during WW2 in Germany. There might be even more examples of this tie to Germany and german culture, but these are the most obvious. And one more thing: Nods to Germany or the german language are also not that uncommon in Anime! First thing that comes to mind is an antagonist in SAO who had a very revealing german name in the game, sadly I can't remember correctly, but it was along the lines of literally being named “Death”.

The tone of OP 2 reminds me of _Primo Victoria_ by Sabaton, in that both songs are about grim battles (Battle of Trost and D-Day respectively), but both songs celebrate them as the *first victory* of the forces of freedom (Humanity Within the Walls for OP 2 and the Western Front Allies in Primo Victoria) against the forces of evil (the Titans in OP 2 and the Nazis in Primo Victoria). Both of them contemplate the nature of sacrifice in war, and conclude that contemplation with a declaration of further wrath upon the enemy.

The final season makes abundantly clear that he is neither overconfident or just so OP that he can afford to let his guard down. The opposite is true for both, he is always 100% on edge but just aware of what has to be done.
So his final thoughts if Eren had transformed and crushed him:

Look how absolutely INSANE you have to be to survive in the scout regiment. He is acting as a third party, trying to stop the fortification of the walls (so nobody finds the titans inside them) and trying to kill eren to keep the secret of the titanshifters hidden. The best part about his character is, that he is 100% right. The Walls were built built by god (Ymir) and he is trying to stop the people of the walls from going down a path of attacking the outside world.
Eren of course will do exactly that, which the king of the walls and his religious order were trying to stop.
With the power of hindsight, viewers who oppose eren should actually root for nick, since he is esentially the first person opposing eren and supporting the euthanasia of paradis. Just in a different way from zeke.

_Though spoilers, I don't think he is 100% right by any means. AoT is not a show that deals in absolutes - everyone here is some shade of grey. Him hiding the truth does not help anyone involved and disguising that in some pseudo-religion certainly does not help either. With him I think the simplest way to describe him would be "Not doing anything is still doing something." But yeah, plenty more rambles on that to follow. _

Pastor Nick actions clearly violate Clause Six of the Charter of Humanity, as he consistently puts his own desires (preserving the Wall Cult's secrets) above the survival of Humanity within the Walls. And how far he goes to protect that secret (i.e., preventing fortification of the Walls) interferes with Garrison operations that should be obvious to anyone. "Oh, you want to use wall-mounted cannons to kill Titans? That sounds like a good idea." Pastor Nick though? He'd rather that everyone in the Outer Walls die so that his position in the Interior's top religion can be preserved.
Killing Eren would have done more harm than good, as it would have transmitted the Attack Titan to a random baby, and since the Attack Titan can do naught but march for freedom, the child would have either tried to join the Scouts, or attempted to destroy the nation it was in for housing Eldians in camps, not to mention the Curse of Ymir, which inflicting on a baby, is just cruel! Keeping Eren gives Humanity within the Walls a chance to fight back against invaders, again, Clause Six of the Charter of Humanity.
So, if the ultimate goal of the Order of the Walls is to go against the claimed goal of Clause Six of the Charter of Humanity, that being the survival of Humanity within the Walls, why put that in the Charter of Humanity? Why make that the only clause of the Charter of Humanity that's highlighted?
*God did not build the Walls, a cruel demiurge that wanted everyone within them to die did.* The stated goal of making Paradise Within the Walls is incompatible with the action of not rebuilding the outermost Wall, which would not have been an act of war. The Vow Against War is not a Vow Against War. It is a pretty way to say "the Vow to Die."

@@jagnestormskull3178 I dont think nick, nor anyone really cares about your charter of humanity. Nick only does one thing: Trust in the King and follow his orders. i dont think Nick understands the higher goal of stopping the eldians from going to war with the rest of the world. He just trusts the King, to know whats right. He is essentially just a proxy for the royal family to enact their wish of suicide.
The stated goal is to make a paradise until the world comes to take their revenge. Its literally the Kings will to stay aside and watch the eldians die, if marley wants that. Reclaiming maria and stopping the enemy shifters is the exact opposide of what he wants.

"I dont think nick, nor anyone really cares about your charter of humanity."
I don't know, the Charter of Humanity seems to be a big deal in season three. The shadow government invokes it to arrest Commander Erwin, suspend all official Scout operations, and unleash notorious serial killer Kenny the Ripper upon the Scouts. Premier Zachary and Commander Erwin invoke it to execute a bloodless coup. Commander Pixis says that he allowed them to execute that coup because he believed in the Charter of Humanity, not because of any particular allegiance to Zachary or Erwin.
"He is essentially just a proxy for the royal family to enact their wish of suicide."
The royal family doesn't wish for suicide, Karl Fritz does. For example, Uri Reiss vowed to use the power of the Founding Titan to defeat the Titans outside the Walls, but then was possessed by Karl Fritz. Historia's sister has immense psychological conflict that manifests in her eye color shifting back and forth; when it's natural eyes, it's her speaking, but when it's Uri's eyes, it's Karl Fritz speaking.
Karl Fritz selfishly made the decisions to rob Eldians of their memories and his descendants of their free will.
"The stated goal is to make a paradise until the world comes to take their revenge. Its literally the Kings will to stay aside and watch the eldians die, if marley wants that."
I'm aware; that's not a Vow Renouncing War though, it's a Vow of Suicide. The Pure Titans outside the Walls are mindless, and thus cannot have any national affiliation. Restoring them to human form would not be an act of war, and in fact would be an act of salvation to them. That's just one example.
The term "Vow Renouncing War" is not accidental, it's purposeful. It is meant to make something horrible sound noble, just like everything that the Order of the Walls does.

So, something about this has bothered me. There's a case to be made for Miche here, I feel like this is natural for the character. One of his most memorable aspects is the fact that he can recognize a titans scent - this ends up saving recruits and is displayed again shortly before he meets the Beast Titan. Smelling Eren is just natural curiosity, if you had this trait I am sure you would also wonder if you could sniff out a titan shifter.

I think that’s telling that Bertholdt was the colossal holding the wall and facing inwards while Annie and Reiner are either: keeping watch before he transforms, or Reiner is ready to go in but facing back and Annie is facing away cos she’d rather go home.

27:15 the painting has deeper meaning. Heres my take on it:
It appears to be a group with daggers attacking a defenceless half-naked man on the ground. I believe it is depicting a slightly twisted story of J. Christ. The people are wearing what appers to be roman-like armour (it was worn around the time when Jesus was born) and the man looking similar to Jesus (he is often depicted as a naked man with a rag to cover himself). This parallels eren and the people. The crowd is trying to kill Eren while he is their saviour.

I just rewatched the second ending and holy cow. There is so much to dissect. I think that the walnut represents Ymir and Eren's manipulation throughout 2000 years of history. Ymir drops the walnut which then rolls past depictions of history. The walnut is the message sent too Eren 2000 years from now, as well as the attack titan/Eren's see/show future memory abilities.
Then we see a sad Mikasa, next to the already crumbled remnants of a wall. The wall has the mantis from her the world is cruel and beautiful flashback.
This is followed by human Eren, connected to his titan form. It looks very reminiscent of a puppeteer pulling the strings. Titan Eren pulling the strings through disconnected memories. Look at how He is drawn on many disconnected pieces of wall, coming together too show a coherent image. Human Eren is limp, and looking away from his future self, showing he is not yet, fully aware of what he is/will become.
The wall is broken -again?-, by a titan hand, And we see the cadets fighting. Ending on Mikasa attacking something with Eren's titan behind her. Is she protecting him, or is he manipulating her? Maybe a bit of both.
Does this hint at what your theory says? Her protecting him, from himself, and ultimately dealing the final blow? Is the sad Mikasa mantis wall scene, showing her reflecting on everything after the wall has crumbled and the rumbling finished?
