In hindsight, the glitchy ending could be Armin, as the narrator, trying to remember what happened around the time he became a titan as he was only kind of alive when he transformed
I also love how both Levi and Mikasa let go of Erwin and Eren to set them free from being slaves to something. There are a lot of parallels between their stories.
Erwin screaming before the Scouts leave for the mission is one of my favourite scenes. One of the the very few things which gets me more hyped than a new AoT overanalysis episode dropping. Especially after seeing Erwin so tormented and exhausted throughout all of season 3, him still being able to build up such charisma and power, as well as genuine excitement for seeing the basement, is just so inspiring, Levi's reaction says everything. And it makes it so much more tragic when he eventually chooses to sacrifice his dream.
I love that Erwin was really just in it for himself and the guilt he has over his father's death. This man did all THIS, had all these people die, think 4 seasons ahead... just because he wish he had shut his mouth.
Not really, his final decision is him prioritizing his duty as a leader. He easily could’ve sent them to die and seen what was in the basement, so in the end he really was in it for everyone else.
@@sliiifertheskydragon9790 He couldn't have sent them to die, Erwin said he had to lead the charge or the scouts wouldn't do it. I’m so glad this video exists. Armin is one of my favorite characters in fiction and I was always kind of mixed up on exactly how Levi decided to choose him in the end.
levi responded both when floch asked him "why did you choose armin" and later, when armin asked him "why did you choose me?" it should be clear, don't rely on videos like this the work itself should be enough. levi replied that he didn't want to make erwin suffer anymore, call him back to that hell and force him to be the devil. I don't really see the future Kenny analogue at all, I just thing Erwin was very obviously already broken from trauma and survivors guilt and in the end Levi realized that he could not bring the true suicidal maniac of AOT back to life as the colossal Titan doomed to be weaponized like a nuclear bomb. BTW do you think Sina, Rose, and Maria got differentiated Titans? I haven't seen this anywhere, but I imagine in going from Ymir's original titan to the Nine passed down separately, there must have been intermediate stages with fewer than nine. We know they take slightly different forms with each shifter. Maybe Ymir's daughters had a proto-Colossal-Female-Founding titan, a proto-Armored-Warhammer-Attack titan, and a proto-Cart-Jaw-Beast titan. I want to say, before I begin, Erwin says some eps before something along the lines of "Armin is our hope for humanity." To Levi. They never bring it up in the flash back.
Oh yes, I remember I was about to skip the outro and I think I wanted to call it a day for AoT, but then this "glitch" happen. So I watched it with some "what... what the..." feeling, and thought I absolutely needed to watch another episode right away. ;]

Levi later explains that he didn't choose Armin, but rather chose for Erwin to die then and there, because of his 私情 aka "personal feelings" (that part sadly wasn't translated quite accurately). Eren also pointed out that Levi wasn't rational on that rooftop at all. That being said, didn't Levi let Erwin free of his suffering, DESPITE what was better for Humanity's victory? We also will hear a lot in s4 that Hange, Armin and others would often reflect on that Erwin would have been a much more capable option for the command. And finally, in all the interview with the author and the cast the main focus when speaking about Midnight Sun episode is always Levi giving Erwin a mercy of peace (he was just about to inject Erwin after all, but what finally stopped him was Erwin himself and his gratitude for letting him go) and never choosing Armin as "the better option". Levi will literally say, "You can never replace him."
It’s begun… 😂 Jokes aside, I’ll talk about all of that when we actually get to the decision, clearly it wasn’t as simple as Levi already having been convinced, but I think it’d be silly to say that the events of this episode don’t weigh on him. Plenty more on that though 👍
@@Koroto thank you for reading my yapping 😅 Yeah, I'm sure there's more to come, it's just that when you said Levi's mind is already 99.9% made up on that night, it left only 0,1% of the weight for all the upcoming events. I think Midnight Sun is known to be the ultimate episode about a choice for a reason, while the Night Before... to me is more about Levi feeling the inevitable and failing at trying to convince Erwin to live 😢 He's definitely not ready for that choice at the time.
@@Koroto Also, Levi doesn't know yet that Flock and others see Erwin as the devil and wish him hell on earth. One of the biggest things he will spare Erwin from.
The glitchy ending is actually similar to something that happens in both the NieR:Automata game and anime, although there it isn't exactly an ED, but it's cool and has kind of the same energy to it.
I think when Erwin smiled at the end of season 2 was because his father's question was answered and by extention his. Everything he's done in S3 is to set the path for the people that could finally share his and his father's dream to uncover the truth, he was not alone anymore, everyone will now the truth, and unfortunately he won't be there to see, he knows how dangerous the mission would be... also, nobody really fulfill their dreams in aot
I think the most important reason imo is that Erwin had no plan beyond the basement but Armin wanted to reach for something further than that, the sea.
God I love this series, it's just so damn cool seeing the little hints and details you don't see the first time watching. Once you're done with AoT I think it would be really cool if you covered Re:Zero. That's all for my yap sesh, take care!
I'm sorry I saw the title and felt like fucking crying. I can't do this right now, I'm still sensitive to these episodes, give me a while to mentally prepare and then I'll watch the video.
kroto i gotta thank you for this series man, aot is already my favorite story to be told and just having you perfectly point out everything i missed and make just about every little thing make absolute perfect sense just makes it even better, also my own little theory, what if the size of the titan correlates to where they where injected in the spine?
I don't think so because both in the anime and the Manga all the eldian are injected at the tip of their spine in their neck and they all transformed into different sizes (when all the people get turned in front of Grisha)
In regard to what you stated near the end, about desperately needing more AOT content to think about: Shingeki Fly, a 35th volume of sorts, is coming out within a day. It’s going to have 18 new pages involving more of Levi’s backstory.
I have a theory that future Eren actually sent that memory of Erwin in his fathers class to him in that moment so Levi would choose armin. Love to hear yours and anyone else’s thoughts on this or perhaps you’ll talk about it in a future video.
People in the comments say that Levi chose the future over the past, but do they realize that Levi himself got stuck in the past after Erwin's death? 🙁 Isayama: "He is currently like a balloon dangling in the air rather aimlessly. To Levi, staying with Erwin until Erwin's last minute gave him a feeling that his has accomplished everything he needs to. I think he still has the goal of killing the Beast Titan." Hiroshi Kamiya (Levi's VA): "Levi hasn't changed. The loss of Erwin is so huge that afterwards he feels like he's just living out the rest of his years" Daisuke Ono (Erwin's VA): "After Erwin's death Levi always seemed lonely."
Little tip I've since picked up if you tend to do this (afaik it applies to all anime): if you see the "to be continued..." End card before the credits, (95% of episodes) it's safe to skip the ED and go to the next episode. If you don't; then watch the ED as there's still more to watch.
Can't wait for your breakdown on the Battle of Shinganshina. I wonder how its gonna go. Are you gonna go by episode by episode, or are you gonna do separate breakdowns for each side of the skirmish?
Hey ! If you love overanalysing so much you should DEFINITELY watch the Monogatari series. Besides, I love your videos on Avatar and AOT, keep it up man !
I think it's the blown back hair and jacket (even though Barturoto also has the same jacket), but no, that's definitely Berotorotorto. 😅 If there were any other instances were Marcel is brought up like that, I think you could make a case for that, but here I think it's just the wind blowing back his hair and the odd angle that kinda makes him look a bit off. I think the headshape is kinda a giveaway for that - Marcel's face was a bit more round/blocky, Bertolts is a lot more oval. (Could also be different animators or something like that. This episode does have a few distinct frames too. Mikasa on the stairs looks a tad different to the usual close ups. Erwin's framing in the Levi scene also changes a little bit etc)
I was wondering what you'd make of Eren saying "why isn't anyone stopping us?". If you'll indulge me, let me share some of my thoughts: To me, this line speaks volumes about how Eren views himself, his own combative nature, aggression, and impulsive, and the role he has come to rely on the others around him to play in that. Throughout the series and in pretty much every flashback of Eren's life, we see him jumping feet first into every conflict, be it with the Shiganshina bullies, with Hannes and the garrison soldiers, with Mikasa's captors, and later with Jean and various other cadets of the 104th, and while in almost every situation he gets in way over his head, but there's always some one around who's stronger, faster, and/or more level-headed than him to bail him out of trouble (usually Mikasa). We will later see him do this again when he hides out in Liberio, makes a charge for Zeke, and of course, The Rumbling; Eren is always counting on his friends and comrades to pull him back before he goes too far. Here, we see what happens when no one comes to his rescue: instead of stopping himself, like he knows deep down he should probably do, he just keeps right on going, allowing the inertia of his impulsiveness carry him forward long after the heat of the moment has cooled down. In a very sneaky way, this, I think, foreshadows Eren's actions in starting The Rumbling not just as a show of force to make a point but as the global cataclysm everyone feared it would be, and once again he relies on his friends to stop him and pull him back before he completely wipes out all of humanity outside the walls. It's one of AoT's signature blink-and-you'll-miss-it seemingly innocuous moments that ends up carrying so much narrative weight, and in my opinion, is one of the most telling and important lines of dialogue in the entire story.
I agree with most of your points but I don't think he had 99 percent made his choice , I think it was weighing heavy on him and he was considering all those points you made but I think with erwin's sacrifice and choosing Levi as the sole survivor to avenge him and the others made him almost guilty to the point where seeing erwin alive (barely) when he assumed he was dead made him double think himself and want to give the syringe to erwin and it was erwin's final hand raise that made him realize what the right choice actual was
Actually, showing off where the commander is used to be an important-no, *vital* - part of battle. Knowing where the head of the army was served not merely as a fount for issuing orders and conforming to the plan, but also to sustain morale. Battles have been lost because the troops merely thought their commander had been slain when his standard bearer tripped. There were, of course, the obvious drawbacks and these indeed were sometimes exploited (“A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!”), but hiding the commander’s location only became a standard when we invented artillery that can hit from miles away. After all, it’s one thing to know where the enemy commander is, but a whole other ordeal to get past his army.
Nah. Commanders advertising themselves as the commander was actually the norm throughout history. Kings would wear crowns on their helms, or gilded armors; generals would wear extremely fancy horse-hair mohawks and feathers, and occasionally fancy scarlet capes. The morale boost to the soldiers, especially if the commander is fighting on the front alongside them, was incredibly potent, and would prove to be instrumental in winning battles, often-times. It was also the case that in the same way flags (or other symbols representing the division of the army you are fighting in such as the Romans' golden eagles) represented a central point to rally around and ensure cohesion in the unit, commanders would often need to be a central figure to ensure that is readily recognizable in order to make sure their orders are carried out. They just had to rely upon their fellow soldiers to protect them and hope no one got a lucky throw with a javelin or shot with a gun/bow/crossbow/slingshot or whathaveyou. It was only after modern communications tech was put into play that generals really had the luxury of hiding away from the battlefield and directing things from elsewhere. Even if most commanders preferred to fight from the rear when it wasn't necessary to join their men at the front (because they did know that losing the commander would likely cost a potential victory, and typically didn't want to put themselves in danger unless they felt it necessary, as such), they would still wear distinguishing markers to make it very clear who was in charge.
I’ll be the first to in line to agree with Levi’s decision, but there are some factors that I see between Erwin and Armin that makes a big difference. I think that Erwin has two traits that Armin is lacking; his charisma and his poker face. Armin’s biggest weakness was his tendency to rely on empathy.
In hindsight, the glitchy ending could be Armin, as the narrator, trying to remember what happened around the time he became a titan as he was only kind of alive when he transformed
Nice way to see it but I also think it’s eren because he also said has it already been four months meaning his warp of time is everywhere
I think it is the Attack Titan's future memories coming into play, especially for the basement reveal.

It’s begun… 😂
Jokes aside, I’ll talk about all of that when we actually get to the decision, clearly it wasn’t as simple as Levi already having been convinced, but I think it’d be silly to say that the events of this episode don’t weigh on him.
Eren be like: Connie spinal cord sword!
Fun fact: Hajime Isayama stated in an interview that Erwin would've given up if he became the Colossal Titan.
Source please? As far as I can tell, this is blatant misinformation.

I wish I got to see levi yell at Erwin and him change his inner philosophy. But I I love the plot line chosen either way.
Thanks for letting us know about the Night trilogy in the series.
Just wanted to say that I love this video series and it deserves far more attention. Keep it up!
My eyes water everytime I see the ending credit, like not crying just water a ton
8:45 you could argue that they took this theory and applied it to the live action adaptaion
I always drop everything as soon as one of these videos come out 🤩
I think the most important reason imo is that Erwin had no plan beyond the basement but Armin wanted to reach for something further than that, the sea.
2:36 genya has a pretty good reason for his scars other than just looking cool
This is awesome!!! Would love more video essays on Levi
The fact we are only a little over halfway through the series is kinda crazy
omg I’ve been impatiently waiting for this series to get to RtS arc 🙏🙏
@elywahl9520 guess I overlooked those moments thank you for reminding me
30:00 god I remember watching this live and that’s when I decided to read the manga

I absolutely love your videos, always top tier ! pls don't stop !
Really enjoy your analysis.
Little bit shocked here after read the title, i thought i missed your series cause the last time i see you still at s3 lol
In regard to what you stated near the end, about desperately needing more AOT content to think about: Shingeki Fly, a 35th volume of sorts, is coming out within a day. It’s going to have 18 new pages involving more of Levi’s backstory.
Thank you for using English dubs in this episode. I am mostly listening only unless I am specifically told I need to see something
I have watch all the aot videos at least 3 times now, keep up the good work man!
Isayama: "He is currently like a balloon dangling in the air rather aimlessly. To Levi, staying with Erwin until Erwin's last minute gave him a feeling that his has accomplished everything he needs to. I think he still has the goal of killing the Beast Titan."
Hiroshi Kamiya (Levi's VA): "Levi hasn't changed. The loss of Erwin is so huge that afterwards he feels like he's just living out the rest of his years"
Daisuke Ono (Erwin's VA): "After Erwin's death Levi always seemed lonely."
So sad that I always skip ED, so I missed the glitchy one.
Noooooooooooooo, that's such a shame. Seeing it for the first time was truly something else.
Little tip I've since picked up if you tend to do this (afaik it applies to all anime): if you see the "to be continued..." End card before the credits, (95% of episodes) it's safe to skip the ED and go to the next episode. If you don't; then watch the ED as there's still more to watch.
11:36 you saying that gives me Stephen King Dark Tower vibes... Death, but not for you gunslinger... never for you
What the fuck I didn't know about the glitched ED, this is crazy!
29:46 is that burrito? I always thought it was an adult Marcel being dreamed up by Reiner
I think it's the blown back hair and jacket (even though Barturoto also has the same jacket), but no, that's definitely Berotorotorto. 😅
If there were any other instances were Marcel is brought up like that, I think you could make a case for that, but here I think it's just the wind blowing back his hair and the odd angle that kinda makes him look a bit off.
I Wish i didn't get spoiled about this episode
I dare you to make one of this videos for a Slap on Titan
It's gonna be WILD😂😂
I love it every time you play the clip of the dude writing heat lmao
WOOOO KOROTO STARTING THE RAMBLING ONCE AGAIN
Me watching this for the 5th time to overanalyze the overanalyzing
Damn I had no idea there was a glitchy ending. Watching it all after the series ended and skipped every ending after a first few times
beeen w8ting soo long... And Korotos cocking again ...
I was wondering what you'd make of Eren saying "why isn't anyone stopping us?". If you'll indulge me, let me share some of my thoughts:
To me, this line speaks volumes about how Eren views himself, his own combative nature, aggression, and impulsive, and the role he has come to rely on the others around him to play in that.
These videos are peak literally peak
Hate having to delay watching these around my girlfriend as I wanna avoid spoilers as I still hold hope I can get here to watch it.

In the dub, when the thunder spears pierced Reiner, he screams “I don’t want to die!” Which reminds you that these guys are human
Two days until the new Levi chapter!
When that new retrospective drops you know it’s a good day
Lol I never thought about what'd I'd do after this series is over oh God I'm not ready
when are you making a video on the ones who live?? this channel got me into the walking dead
God Damn It! XD
