I own the hatch and If this is your first sports car then please be careful with how quickly these things get up to stupid speeds. With only seconds on the throttle you'll notice your well in the 100's and very easy to lose your license. Happy driving 👌🏼

Octane Learning is Only for the i30 n sedan Sam Car legion channel did a race between the pre-facelift of both Sonata N-Line and The Elantra N (I30 N).

I don’t understand why Hyundai made it so difficult to activate. You literally have to break the speed limit on the motorway in most of Australia, and then next thing you know it’s reset anyway. Probably just going to get a tune since it’s such a pain, shame I have to risk voiding warranty to get what the car offers (when it feels like it) stock. I always fill up with 98 just give me the boost. 😢
There are 2 ways to activate it, we chose this as it was the simplest method. However, if you arrive at a racetrack to do a track day there is another method that avoids the need for constant high speed.

We need to retest… after octane learned you didn’t use the NGS overboost button. There is another 2/10th to come off… so procedure is octane learn for 5 mins, then activate launch control, then hit NGS and your away! I know ridiculous
Only use ngs after shifting to second gear, that was it doesn't spin so much on first gear because of the 10 extra HP (overboost) Test have been done showing that's the most optimal way :)
So you turn up at the lights, look across at your opponent, and have to shout out that you will race them in 15 minutes or so after you go for a cruise down the highway, wait here. What a feature! Why aren’t all sports cars like this?
@@LukeEsther once per refuel still seems massively inconvenient, especially on a small sedan driven that is likely going to be largely driven around urban areas. There is vanishingly few reasons why you would tune an engine like this, unless you had grave concerns about aforementioned engine’s ability to sustain such a level of performance, in which case, why would you bother to include such a convoluted method of unlocking it?
@@rsoul7282 there's probably no need to do this if you're getting fuel from the same bowser. And it's not like you have to do this procedure...you can say the same thing about launch control generally having "such a convoluted method of unlocking it".

Modern engine management systems should not need 5 minutes of high speed driving to adjust their tune, it just seems strange why they went down this path. Anyway, I don’t work for Hyundai, they are a reputable company with excellent engineers, I’m sure they have their reasons.
What I would like to know is will it up boost if you use E85. Most tuned cars run E85 as it is less prone to detonation, so you can put more timing in. Knock sensors take timing out. I wonder if the computer is actually trying to safely provide power.
Would be good if it stayed learned for the whole tank but it constantly unlearns itself multiple times throughout. What’s worse is apparently the learned state isn’t extra power but only the 206kw Hyundai advertises, so the majority of the time when you’re driving around with 15-16psi its only about 180-190kw
This is the part that frustrates me. I can only access my full stated power in the brochure when Jupiter aligns with Saturn.. that too; if my chakras move out of alignment, I have to get Jupiter to align with Saturn again to begin the process again. I LOVE the car that it is when it's octane learned, I hate the disappointment when it unlearns two ignition cycles later. It has the highest tendency of octane learning when I've got 120km left in the tank. How am I supposed to enjoy THAT!!

@@cadyeaman7017as an EN owner this is completely untrue. You make advertised power without octane learning. Octane learned, these cars dyno at 270 whp (sxth element inhouse dyno). On the same dyno, the veloster N makes 230whp(while being advertised as only 1 less HP). Making 230-240 whp would be the advertised 276 crank HP, which the car more than makes without octane learning. The EN is so underrated in power, even when you're not octane learned you're getting more than promised. It's not a coincidence the EN is rated at the same HP and torque as the r34 gtr (that famously broke the gentleman's agreement by being very underated in HP). Again, the EN dynos at like 40 more whp than the VN, that's like 50hp crank. Hyundai knows this, everyone knows the EN makes significantly more power than the VN does stock because of their turbo. The extra 1hp rating (276 vs 275) is bogus, the car is super underrated in power.
Renault sport cars have a similar function. There is a parameter called slow knock timing correct. It resets back to zero if you cruise between 70-90 kph for a few minutes in top gear.
It does say it's for 'quick' learning after filling with higher octane fuel. That suggests it will learn either way and there's no reason it should revert unless lower octane is added. Nothing else makes sense.
Now I’m even more intrigued. The same engine is in the i30N Hatch, Kona N & this i30N Sedan. All claim 206kw & 392nm. Both the Hatch & Kona will show 18psi without octane learning, as they don’t have it. The Sedan will only go to 18psi AFTER octane learning. So without it being in octane learning mode, it’s making less than the advertised power??? As it’s quite possible that an owner may never get it into octane learning mode, as it has to be done every time fuel is put in the car. So then you might only be getting 185kw & 340nm without octane learning. So could that be False Advertising??? We need Paul & the Car Expert crew to get an i30N Hatch & Sedan & put them on a dyno & then dyno the sedan after octane learning.
Yeah, to know if your N car is it its optimum power setting watch the boost gauge. It should easily go over 16psi ant hit 18/19 psi if you floor it. Some say it will reset back once you refill your car. 🤷🏻♂️. This is true for cars that has this octane learning function. Some region does not have it, I believe.
The only way to keep the octane learning all the time is filling the tank no more than 95-105 miles from E which is about 3.0-3.2 gallons of gas or less then when you do let the car idle for about a 1 min for the ECU to read the 93 fuel then drive down the road NORMALLY for about a mile or so then switch to N mode and punch it in D4 watch the psi gage read 18psi+ and you're good. Rinse & repeat if you fill full tank itll reset the boost. 🏁
You'll be at the gas station every day? if you only have 100mi of fuel in your tank. I just feel there should be some sort of option to have it "octane learned" all the time, especially if you're putting in premium fuel each time. Maybe something to disable it, if for w/e reason you're in a situation where you have to put something lower than premium.
Octane learning doesn't only affect boost, it also affects ignition timing. On 93 octane in Florida, I usually get 18psi average learned on 93 octane. If I go North to MN for example to an area where they only have 91, I get 19-20psi. The torque target in the end is about the same. It compensates by adjusting both boost and timing for the given fuel.
Bloody stupid idea. Hyundai advertise and sell you a car with 206Kw and 400Nm but don't let you utilise the full amount of power unless you jump through hoops and do back flips every time you fill up the tank. What a joke. Just buy the hatch, better looking car and you don't need to mess around with octane learning like you do with the sedan. Hopefully they don't add it to the update on the hatch when it comes.
The hatch is also significantly slower due to having a smaller turbo. Octane learning is annoying, but it isn't that big of a deal. Just get a tune and forget about it.
The point is that you can run cheaper fuel if you would like, it prevents owners from damaging their cars and provides a wider fuel option.. not all stations have the same grade of fuel so it makes sense that there is a default map.

How does the ECU technically "learn" the octane of the fuel? It's not as if it has the equivalent of an ethanol content sensor, otherwise it would be almost immediate without any driving around at certains speeds for 13 minutes. I can only assume it''s using the knock sensor and looking for values before it unlocks more boost. I think the RPM limit when cold is more valuable than this protection "feature", but I suppose if it saves a engine, all good. No use for anyone that only puts 98 in all the time though.
It'd use data from the O2 sensors in the exhaust combined with knock percentage and constant load and airflow to validate the fuel and timing - ie, puts the combustion process into a known result test where any deviations produce measurable results. It's less learning the octane more validating the target fuel burnability (is that a word lol)
It does not. I have a CX30 TPP and the car gives you the full 250HP on 93 octane immediately after pulling out of the gas station, with no settings adjustments or anything. I don't understand why Hyundai is requiring all these ridiculous steps. Also, the Mazda Turbo engine with AWD is wicked quick, I'm really impressed with it. I'll be selling it for the Elantra N, as it's not nearly as fun, but it is certainly just as fast, if not faster with AWD on premium fuel
Not as noticeable 0-60 where the extra power causes more traction issues unless you have some good tires until you get moving. Octane learning accounts for a full half a second in the 1/4 mile on my Kona N, which is pretty significant. That's like a 50hp difference or so. It's very noticeable. Annoying, but prior to being tuned, I'd just fill up once every week or two, go for a quick ride down the highway. As long as you have a highway accessible, not that big of a deal. That being said, he was able to shave a full half a second off his 0-100 here, not .2.
Remember when you could just disconnect the battery for 20min and give it a good flogging and there you go, octang learned yo 😂 it was a simpler time, a better time
We're not far from people spending their spare hour on a Sunday sitting in the car pushing buttons like prepping an Airbus A380 for take off. Then you have to go back inside again because the missus is yelling at you.
What a noticeable difference, it's a cool feature to actually adjust accordingly to the actual octane level of the gas you have in the tank. Curious if it needs to relearn every time or does it only reset per fill-up?
Does anyone know if the US version Hyundai Elantra N has this process, or is it strictly an 130N feature. I would hope it is not, and the Elantra N can manage its own octane and give the car it's full boost potential without having to run through that whole process.
Apparently it was hyundai messing around with anti lag and they left it that way. Not sure how it's legal stock in Aus these days lol. They let off gun shots every now and then.
Be much better if you didn't have to do all that to get the car to perform to it's peak, why wouldn't they just make so when you N mode you get 18-19 psi.
I agree. That'd be nice. I have a 23 Elantra N, and it just isn't worth it to me to keep doing this, and i don't want to get a tune, and void the warranty. Oh well. I wish they had a way that it couldn't just have other options
This is exactly what an ECU gets rid of and yes, i know it could void your warranty but I've seen a video of Brentwood Hyundai in Canada that actually embeaces mods like this, what a concept🤔
Really not that big of a deal. That being said, I ended up tuning my KN so I didn't have to worry about it anymore. 2 years / 40k miles and zero sensor issues. Haven't had one single issue whatsoever with the car yet.
What a drama just to get the performance it should have out of the box. Who could be bothered with all this bollocks. Get in, start, press the go juice.
Hyundai are so silly running this tune. I have Kona N and it will pull 18psi anytime, any temperature. Hit NGS and it will pull 19/20 psi everytime. Add better tyres , I use Potenza sports and I will regularly pull close to 5 seconds flat. I was open to updating to this Sedan but the silly octane learning rules that out imo. It resets at every fuel stop so how is it safe on a public road to go through that garbage learning. The 130 N hatch like the Kona does not have this tune.
How stupid.. Octane learning mode.. It's like waiting for Tesla batteries to warm up even if it's at operating temp, before you can properly launch it..

It depends though the car is still really loud for stock. I'm going to get mine tuned when the warranty ends

only needs to be done once per refuel, and it will probably happen in the first drive after you refuel anyway

All the Renault turbos do it, not just sport, fussy logic recalibrate after a few hard acceleration inputs.

Only the Sedan has octane learning. The hatch (pre facelift and facelift) and Kona N get 19-20psi out of the box :)
Nope the Kona N has it too. The one park in my driveway says so. And it's only 18 PSI. 14-15 when not OL.

29 degrees hot? In Perth that is a cool change. 42 degrees is a bit uncomfortable, but it was a regular temperature in Perth this summer.

What fuel are you using? My Kona N without learning drive (at over 110KPH) will still peak at 19PSI boost on RON98 fuel

There is no octane learning on Kona N's. You get the full beans straight out of the box.

No matter what i tried on my 2019 i30 Fastback N the wheels always spun. There is jsut too much power at the front. The N cars need AWD.

I think the RPM limit when cold is more valuable than this protection "feature", but I suppose if it saves a engine, all good. No use for anyone that only puts 98 in all the time though.
It'd use data from the O2 sensors in the exhaust combined with knock percentage and constant load and airflow to validate the fuel and timing - ie, puts the combustion process into a known result test where any deviations produce measurable results. It's less learning the octane more validating the target fuel burnability (is that a word lol)

I have a CX30 TPP and the car gives you the full 250HP on 93 octane immediately after pulling out of the gas station, with no settings adjustments or anything. I don't understand why Hyundai is requiring all these ridiculous steps.
Also, the Mazda Turbo engine with AWD is wicked quick, I'm really impressed with it. I'll be selling it for the Elantra N, as it's not nearly as fun, but it is certainly just as fast, if not faster with AWD on premium fuel

No.
It’s one of the stupidest/clumsiest features ever put into a car.
Not as noticeable 0-60 where the extra power causes more traction issues unless you have some good tires until you get moving. Octane learning accounts for a full half a second in the 1/4 mile on my Kona N, which is pretty significant. That's like a 50hp difference or so. It's very noticeable. Annoying, but prior to being tuned, I'd just fill up once every week or two, go for a quick ride down the highway. As long as you have a highway accessible, not that big of a deal.
That being said, he was able to shave a full half a second off his 0-100 here, not .2.
Remember when you could just disconnect the battery for 20min and give it a good flogging and there you go, octang learned yo 😂 it was a simpler time, a better time
Now you know why pple are getting 5sec 0-100 times on Fay's where the weather is cooler = denser oxygen = better turbo and engine performance

What a noticeable difference, it's a cool feature to actually adjust accordingly to the actual octane level of the gas you have in the tank. Curious if it needs to relearn every time or does it only reset per fill-up?

I tried it on my Elantra N mt6 but I only get 17 psi . Only one time I got it to go 18/19 . What’s the secret does anyone know?
Does anyone know if the US version Hyundai Elantra N has this process, or is it strictly an 130N feature. I would hope it is not, and the Elantra N can manage its own octane and give the car it's full boost potential without having to run through that whole process.

I agree. That'd be nice. I have a 23 Elantra N, and it just isn't worth it to me to keep doing this, and i don't want to get a tune, and void the warranty. Oh well. I wish they had a way that it couldn't just have other options

This is exactly what an ECU gets rid of and yes, i know it could void your warranty but I've seen a video of Brentwood Hyundai in Canada that actually embeaces mods like this, what a concept🤔

The fact you have to do this is silly. One of the reasons I don't have my Kona N anymore, besides sensor failures non stop.
Really not that big of a deal. That being said, I ended up tuning my KN so I didn't have to worry about it anymore. 2 years / 40k miles and zero sensor issues. Haven't had one single issue whatsoever with the car yet.
One more info fore u guys... Less than 10 Litres gas = no need to do octan learning 😂👍👌

Hyundai are so silly running this tune. I have Kona N and it will pull 18psi anytime, any temperature. Hit NGS and it will pull 19/20 psi everytime. Add better tyres , I use Potenza sports and I will regularly pull close to 5 seconds flat. I was open to updating to this Sedan but the silly octane learning rules that out imo. It resets at every fuel stop so how is it safe on a public road to go through that garbage learning. The 130 N hatch like the Kona does not have this tune.
