**2nd Update** So I fueled a couple days ago and today I tried nailing the gas again, not as many days since I tried it the 1st time but today all I could manage was 16 psi🙄 I swear if a tune eliminates this I'll get it purely for that reason alone. It shouldn't take long for a modern car to figure out your running 93 octane🤔
Seems some people are just having more issues than others to get the car to learn properly, I wouldn’t doubt it’s not your fault and you’re likely doing it right. But it’s also possible that the weather conditions have an effect on it too.
@@ttoommssmmiitthh ....nah because the next day it spiked 19 like before. My buddy and I agree it's the weather. The morning cooler temps keep the boost lower, warmer temps more boost, even a 7-9 degree uptick. These modern cars are soooo sensitive to weather💯
Why didn't they just give it profiles to switch to. And after it's octane learned. It saves these settings.... they show you to choose suspension. Steering. Exhaust. Lsd. But you can't do that with the octane learning?
Great video as always! Started watching the Channel since your very early days. I have a question tho. How do you set up the mph in the middle of the speedometer? I don’t can’t find an option for it in the settings lol
It octane learns everytime you put gas in the car switch the car to eco mode or normal mode and drive it for 10 to 15 mins you have to stay at about 70 mph then once the little drive is done switch it to N mode and you should pull about 18 to 20 PSI
I have two questions my bad. So first one, is I only need to do it once after filling up not everytime I drive the car right? And for the octane learning, can I do it on N mode, 75mph, for 15 minutes and I can get 19-20 psi or? What you think? I tried normal mode 8 th gear manual and never worked at all for 7 mins and 42 second. Please let me know. Thank you!
I’m in Aus and i had a quick look through my Manual and it doesn’t have anything about Octane Learning in there which is weird. I’ve had the car since last March and have never really had it boost to 18 PSI
We have the Octane Learning in our cars...it just doesn't say so in the manual. I showed my dealer the photos of the Elantra manual showing octane learning and they said it's the first they've heard about it
I'm going to have to check this out. Hey question, do you know if you can set the Gauge style to your custom drive mode setting? I want the Sport mode gauges with my Custom setting but always uses N gauge screen? Thanks take care
It literally resets every time I park the car and turn it off. Wasted gas and over 30 mins of my time getting out of the city and driving on the highway for nothing... Tried putting only 1 gallon of the same 91 gas for the wasted gas and it kept the boost until I parked the car and came back to drive it... I saw a post that says you have to fill it from "empty" but what does empty even mean? like 5 miles before the tanks dry or what?
So I have tried twice now. I set the cruise at 72 and 78 mph I put 93 octane in it and I still can not get past 15lbs and drove for 8 min both times. Should I exceed 10 min?
***UPDATE*** I run 93 all the time and filled up last Sat. Yesterday I drove 1/2 mile to the touch-free wash, ran it through there and drove home. My drive from that wash to home is about 5 miles, no highway and I hit 19 psi...maybe my car is "good learner"🤔
@@ENtense well it only went to 19 psi for a second as far as I could see. As far as feeling the difference, as you know the car just pulls and pulls, it's a beast! I can't wait to get the SXTH Element turbo inlet pipe and their CPTL intake. Opening up the inlet will flow more and give a bit more boost and hopefully hold higher boost longer🙏🤔
Hyundai will say every time the car gets refueled, but others have said if you top off when you’re at 4 gallons it will stay trained. Not for sure though without further testing.
@@kodyking3090 so you can avoid the psi resetting by filling up 3.9 gallons when you are at 0 miles left. Practical no, but if your like me I am a car guy and don't mind doing a little extra to keep extra hp and decrease weight and getting fresh gas. I also don't commute a lot and mostly use it as a toy. I don't mind having to fill up extra to get most out of the car.
Drove mine for about 800 miles in 3 days trying to do it, on my manual 6mt, I got it to do it once and that was after I cruised for 90mph for 10 miles. Not very reproduceable for a 6mt.
Don’t stay at a constant speed. Drop down to 65mph in 6th and give it 40-45% throttle for 5-10 seconds, climbing to 75mph. Let off for 5-10 seconds. Repeat for 5-8 minutes. Done. Works every time on my 6MT. The idea is that you’re constantly introducing load at lower RPM which forces the motor to advance timing to hit the torque target. This repeated timing advance is how the car learns. Staying at a constant speed may also cause timing advance, but based on elevation change etc it won’t happen nearly as fast. The owner’s manual should be revised, honestly.
It worked for me but when I turned car off and back, I was back to 15 psi lol. And never got back again to 18-19 at all. I put 91 chevron and so on.. any ideas why it got reset? I didn’t fill up and had hella miles left lol: thank you.
No idea. This octane learning is stupid. I can only get 16psi and it says I am only pushing peak 250 ft lbs. They should have made this car premium fuel only. Car feels like it only has 200 wheel horsepower
@@4drturbo85 you know what that's going to do? People blowing up engines and blaming hyundai for it. This was a smart move on hyundai to protect their reputation. Remember what happened when the genesis Coupes first came out. Lol
I’ve been running 91 in my EN DCT almost since I got it in April this year so I think mine already learned on its own because I don’t remember a time not getting 19-20 boost.
Can you try to add only 3-4 gallons to see if it resets? I'm going to buy this car but I'm held up on the octane learning... Hopefully if you add a little bit of gas here and there it will not reset. Any answer?
Any time the car detects you've added gas to the tank, it resets the octane learning because using low octane fuel (lower than 91/93) can cause knock and pinging in the motor which will destroy it over time, my work-around that makes me hardly ever think about octane learning is don't nickel and dime the gas tank, it holds like 10 gallons from empty so just go for a full refuel and take a small drive down the local highway to let it see if you put the right fuel in (octane learning), and set the cruise at between like 68 and 80 or something, gotta stay in 6th gear or higher in the dct model for the entire time, and let it go for I think about ten minutes and it should be octane learned.. only main complaint I've still got is it won't tell you when it is, or isn't octane learned so you've just gotta mash the pedal to find out
Hi curious to know but after you have performed the octane learn successfully what PSI will the car hit once the NGS overboost is activated ? Obviously the NGS timer hides the speedo boost gauge but the centre console screen should show it . Can we have a test run to see please or if you know already.
@@ENtense Yes it must had a boost cut limit at some point but the NGS over boost function almost seems redundant if that peak psi is already being reached without being activated so maybe it has a bit more to give. Be interesting to see and thanks for the reply .
Has anyone experienced “losing” the octane learning? I just bought an Elantra N (6MT). I was hitting the 18-19 psi on the original tank of gas. Then I filled up when it was nearly empty with 93 octane Shell. Drove to work the next morning (it’s a 45 mile commute of mostly interstate). The car octane learned successfully, as I was hitting the 18-19 psi/boost on the way home that day. Fast-forward a couple of days. I’m off work and take the car for a backroad drive, and now it’s limited to 15-16 psi. What’s going on?
@@ENtense I know it does say in the manual that cruse control is possible. I have to head out to a job in the next 10 mins and fill up with gas. Im gonna try with cruse control at 73mph like you, normal and see what happens. Ill message you back if it was a sucess.
Curious about the actual accuracy of the gauges anyway but I will give this a run through in my 6-sp. Any other manual owners out there experiencing an increase in at least the displayed boost number after running through the "learning"???.........mine seems to indicate a peak 16, then 15 steady since new on 93.........
I've kept having issues with octane learning, and I'm not sure if it's because I drive in custom N mode after refueling or not, or if it's because I have to drive in traffic. What happens is I'll use the same fuel, sometimes I'll get the 19 PSI, sometimes I don't. Super annoying when you know this car can almost hit 300hp
I have a 6 spd N that i just picked up on 4 days ago. I am getting my first oil change in 3 days, (yes I drove it a LOT). Has anyone seen the effectiveness of octane learning on a manual?
I've had some difficulties getting my MT to learn. I'm going to try 91 instead of 93 and disconnect the battery for 10 mins or so before trying to learn again.
I have a 2022 Kona N and I was noticing sometimes my car “felt” fast and other times, although quick, felt it was lacking. Started digging into info and found out about the octane learning… something no one really mentions. Did the octane learning and bam, car felt like I remembered… so the thing about the “learning” is, based on your daily commute, the ecu may or may not ever learn during your drives… all my travel is city, so I never meet the “requirements” for the learn… I went a full tank of gas without it ever learning and only gave 14-15psi the whole tank. Did the learn, bam 19-20psi… crazy the system has such stringent guides to get peak boost and it can’t learn throughout a tank of gas.. either way, still love the car; just something I need to be mindful of when I wanna race and stuff.
I’m glad to keep hearing more people tell the truth of how there’s a difference. Be careful, there’s likely someone going to tell you that it’s all in our head and this is just a big fluke 😂

Can anyone help me with my scenario. With how my drive is to work it is impossible to do high speed and even low speed is impossible. I’m only on the freeway for like 3 miles and the rest is city. I tried a different route on the freeway but going 70 for 5 minutes just doesn’t due to other drivers and it being already 15 over the limit. Also going between 25-75 mph in 4th with 40-70% throttle doesn’t make sense. Someone please help. I’m pretty much never octane learned
If it “holds the boost” why didn’t you show a video of you making 2-4 gear pull? How come you never went to redline in a taller gear than first or second???? You would only allow it to pull in lower rpm’s…. No way it holds 18/19psi all the way to redline
Just because of time and trying to be respectful on the roads. But I’d be glad to show that. There’s been other videos on the forums and Facebook groups of people doing it as well.
So basically all you have to do is after you fill up get on the interstate set Cruz at 75 mph for 10 minutes and it will learn. Kind of retarded that we have to do stuff like this every fill up to get the max performance out of the car. Especially when I'm running 93 all the time. You would think that if you're running a lower octane fuel when you first go wide open throttle the car will retard the timing and know you're running lower octane due to knock. Should automatically pick up once you go wide open throttle to know what fuel is in the car. Would hate to fill up the car and come across someone on the road that you wanted to race in Mexico and your car lacks performance due to not have "octane learned"
Still haven't got it to octane learn. Only pushing 16psi. Max torque is only 250. Car doesn't seem to pull that hard at all.😢 We did a trip that was around 115 mi away and had the cruise set at 75 for like 20 minutes. 6mt EN. When are if I need a reset the PCM or something by disconnecting the battery. Right when I got the car and I broke it in and hit that 600 mi mark I went wide open throttle and it felt pretty good and I was hitting 18 lbs.. And I remember one day on my way to work It's like the car hit a brick wall when I was going in a boost. Ever since that happened months ago I haven't been able to run more than 16 lb and all I run is 93 octane.
What an annoying pain in the butt this is. Surely there are systems that can detect what type of fuel is in the tank without having to drive in the manner prescribed. My Renault Clio Mk IV RS200 needs 95 RON (I love in Australia), but I thought I'd test to see if it would run on E10 94 RON, as some 95 RON specified cars can do so. Within 15 minutes of normal driving with the 94 RON a warning light appeared asking me to get the car serviced. I just then fully filled the car with correct 95 RON, and the light eventually went out, but it proves sensors can be more finely tuned than those that appear to be in the N. What makes this even more annoying is that you have to do this every time you re-fill the tank when, again, the default should just be that you've filled with the same fuel unless you run the car through the learning process again.
Freeway about 77mph with cruze tried to stay out of eco but switched sometimes every 30 miles or so between N eco or normal. Mostly driving in normal trying to learn.
@@tyler7226 Did you ever get it to work? I only run 93 in mine and only get 250 foot pounds and 16 psi according to what it says in the cabin on the gauge. Car feels like it only has like 220 whp. I have one with the manual transmission maybe that's why
Hate to be the "negative" guy here, but please head over to the facebook group and look at the newest post about the subject. This has been completely debunked by engineers and two prominent tuners with data. Looking at the low accuracy boost gauge and coming to conclusions about is nonsense, and the impressions are simply filled with confirmation bias.
Hey Will, thanks for your feedback on this. I know you own one of these yourself, and while you and many others tend to agree with these engineers, I am one of the owners that feels the difference and believes it helps. No disrespect to anyone who stands by their claims, it’s just my opinion that its in the owners manual for a reason. Perhaps there are reasons some people feel the difference, while others don’t. But when you drive this car daily, it’s pretty easy to feel the difference in my opinion.
@@ENtense No worries. I'm just data-driven. The issue and reason why anecdotal evidence is taken with a huge grain of salt is simply that the body/mind is extremely susceptible to error. For example, there was a peer-reviewed study a while back that included lots of fighter pilots with thousands if tens of thousands of flight time. Some of the most highly trained, experienced people extremely in-tune with their senses were tested on whether they could "feel" their speed, direction or attitude after some blindfolded maneuvers. Every single one was completely and utterly wrong in every case. The brain is a fickle thing. But yeah, definitely look at the data I posted, and also the comments by SXTH and Tork who have tuned these ECU's. The ECU does have a learning period, but in general it doesn't include boost and it is also extremely quick (within a minute in some cases). No need to waste gas on the highway haha, just drive normal for a few.

Seems some people are just having more issues than others to get the car to learn properly, I wouldn’t doubt it’s not your fault and you’re likely doing it right. But it’s also possible that the weather conditions have an effect on it too.
Try a different gas station?
@@ttoommssmmiitthh ....nah because the next day it spiked 19 like before. My buddy and I agree it's the weather. The morning cooler temps keep the boost lower, warmer temps more boost, even a 7-9 degree uptick. These modern cars are soooo sensitive to weather💯
I wonder if it would boost even higher if you put 100 or higher race octane 🤔🤔🤔
Nice.
Does the car octane learn every time you are following the octane learn mode? Or does it learn when the fuel guage is at the full line or something?
It octane learns everytime you put gas in the car switch the car to eco mode or normal mode and drive it for 10 to 15 mins you have to stay at about 70 mph then once the little drive is done switch it to N mode and you should pull about 18 to 20 PSI
Nice! The N has achieved Super Saiyan Blue.
Also people should know that this method is for the system to octane learn faster. It will octane learn through normal driving but it takes longer.
True.
If you’re in N mode there’s no way to use the sport mode gauges unfortunately
Does it need to be in normal mode to octane learn?
It literally resets every time I park the car and turn it off. Wasted gas and over 30 mins of my time getting out of the city and driving on the highway for nothing... Tried putting only 1 gallon of the same 91 gas for the wasted gas and it kept the boost until I parked the car and came back to drive it... I saw a post that says you have to fill it from "empty" but what does empty even mean? like 5 miles before the tanks dry or what?
That's annoying AF lol I only got it once on my Kona N. Gave up trying again.. waste of time and gas.
So I have tried twice now. I set the cruise at 72 and 78 mph I put 93 octane in it and I still can not get past 15lbs and drove for 8 min both times. Should I exceed 10 min?
You need 15 minutes
On the N page, how is your throttle a green bar and the brakes a red bar? Is it a setting? On my Kona N it’s all the same color
No matter what I do I can not get the psi boost over 16psi. Do you have to do it each time you fill up?
You have to do it again each fill up unfortunately
***UPDATE***
I run 93 all the time and filled up last Sat. Yesterday I drove 1/2 mile to the touch-free wash, ran it through there and drove home. My drive from that wash to home is about 5 miles, no highway and I hit 19 psi...maybe my car is "good learner"🤔
It can definitely do the octane learning with normal driving too. What’s your honest opinion, could you feel a difference?
@@ENtense well it only went to 19 psi for a second as far as I could see. As far as feeling the difference, as you know the car just pulls and pulls, it's a beast!
I can't wait to get the SXTH Element turbo inlet pipe and their CPTL intake. Opening up the inlet will flow more and give a bit more boost and hopefully hold higher boost longer🙏🤔
mh... is this a feature only available on the Elantra? I'll have to try this on my 2022 i30N...
Can you fill the car up while it’s running so you don’t have to do this every tank?
So would you have to do this on every fill up or every car start?
Hyundai will say every time the car gets refueled, but others have said if you top off when you’re at 4 gallons it will stay trained. Not for sure though without further testing.
3.9 gallons to be safe. I found that when I tested 5 gallons it went back to 15 psi. So when empty refill 4 gallons and it doesn't reset
@@boostlife6370 do you gotta roll around with 3.9 gallons or less so it doesn’t reset?
@@kodyking3090 so you can avoid the psi resetting by filling up 3.9 gallons when you are at 0 miles left. Practical no, but if your like me I am a car guy and don't mind doing a little extra to keep extra hp and decrease weight and getting fresh gas. I also don't commute a lot and mostly use it as a toy. I don't mind having to fill up extra to get most out of the car.
@@boostlife6370 hmm doesn’t the 5 min reset drive time not convince you to just fill it up and take 5 min of driving to reset?
Nice, do you know if the VN has something similar??
Honestly I would assume so, but I haven’t seen any hard evidence from the brief research I did on the VN.
@@ENtense I will try it and see if I can get any difference but the top speed here is around 55 to 60 so is hard to tell.
If I fill up with 91 everyday does this car still need octane learning
Never put anything but 91 in my Kona so far. I’ve even seen 20 psi a few times lol…
@plasticksrt thats the track learning method mentioned in the manual and it does work , works way better doing it in the lower gears.
Lol
My Kona N doesn't always learn with the exact highway method. Sometimes it does sometimes it don't.
Does this have to be immediately after refuel? Or can I go later in my tank when I have time? Stupid question ik.
Not a stupid question! You can do it anytime. I was at about a half tank when I did this.
So will the jb4 skip the learning process ?
seems like it to me
I’ve been running 91 in my EN DCT almost since I got it in April this year so I think mine already learned on its own because I don’t remember a time not getting 19-20 boost.
same, I only run 91.
So it never goes back to normal after you refuel? That's what I heard it does, and mine certainly did.
@@animaljoe1 yes every time you re-fuel it resets and re-learns
Strange that a stock car can do this “octane learning”! Do you know if the i30N pre Facelift can also do this
Not sure to be honest
Can you try to add only 3-4 gallons to see if it resets? I'm going to buy this car but I'm held up on the octane learning... Hopefully if you add a little bit of gas here and there it will not reset. Any answer?
Any time the car detects you've added gas to the tank, it resets the octane learning because using low octane fuel (lower than 91/93) can cause knock and pinging in the motor which will destroy it over time, my work-around that makes me hardly ever think about octane learning is don't nickel and dime the gas tank, it holds like 10 gallons from empty so just go for a full refuel and take a small drive down the local highway to let it see if you put the right fuel in (octane learning), and set the cruise at between like 68 and 80 or something, gotta stay in 6th gear or higher in the dct model for the entire time, and let it go for I think about ten minutes and it should be octane learned.. only main complaint I've still got is it won't tell you when it is, or isn't octane learned so you've just gotta mash the pedal to find out
@@ruller213 thank you man much appreciated this is what I thought
I have a kona n but I have never seen over 16psi or over 270 torque. It mostly runs around 15psi and 250-260 torque is that normal?

Hi curious to know but after you have performed the octane learn successfully what PSI will the car hit once the NGS overboost is activated ? Obviously the NGS timer hides the speedo boost gauge but the centre console screen should show it . Can we have a test run to see please or if you know already.
Interesting thought, but my first thought is that it wouldn’t go past 19-20. But I may try to do some testing on this.
What’s going on?
also in the 5-10 mins did you use cruse control?
I planned on it but right after I turned it on, I turned it right back off
@@ENtense I know it does say in the manual that cruse control is possible. I have to head out to a job in the next 10 mins and fill up with gas. Im gonna try with cruse control at 73mph like you, normal and see what happens. Ill message you back if it was a sucess.

Came here to do this to a VN 😂
Does this require me to do this every time I start the car? Because I rarely get a chance to do 10 minutes on the highway lol
