  • Today I show you my super easy method of connecting Starlink or any other internet service to a barn, external garage, shed, pool house, studio, mother-in-law's house, or any other outbuilding for that matter.
    You will have both a strong WiFi signal at the outbuilding and more importantly a hardwired ETHERNET connection to the internet without having to get sweaty digging trenches.
    I hope you find this helpful or at least entertaining.

    I am doing much the same thing sharing Starlink with an outbuilding about 1,000 ft away on the family cattle ranch, using a directional 5.8Ghz POE accesspoint on one end and a Wavlink omnidirectional on the other end with that unit in client bridge mode, which does allow me to run a hardwired ethernet cable into the metal building where it feeds an router being used in access point mode, no need for that second repeater and added latency it brings.

    Joseph, befor I got my Starlink system I had Frontier DSL and it SUCKED 4 Mbps down and 300 Kpbs up. I had a bunch of old Linsys 54 G routers and it was slow but I lived with it becouse I had them and it made no sense to upgrade the routers with Frontier DSL. After I got my Starlink I watch one of your videos and you showed the TP-LINK Archer -7 Router so I bought 4, 3 to use and one as a spare. With the Linsys routers I had the main router in the house, years ago my and I ran 3 CAT5 Cables from the house down through the floor from the house router over to our garage through the wall into the garage up into the attic acrost the attic floor and down the garage inside wall through the wall and down the wall into the ground. I runs about 30 ft over to my workshop where it comes out of the ground and goes through the workshop wall to a bench where I had a Linksys router configured as an access point. I installed the Starlink on the roof of my workshop and the cable to a workbench in the shop and set a router on the workbench and conected it to the Starlink router as a router with a cat5 adapter. Then I ran two CAT-5 Cables from that access point up the wall into the attic of the work shop across the attic to the opaset wall through that wall does into the ground and around 55ft to my Pollbarn where it comes out of the ground goes through the wall it then goes up the wall to a small platform that another TP-LINK Archer -7 access point sits. All of the CAT-5 Cables are in 1-1/4 inch conduit using electrical sweeps and and pull boxes. Yes it was expensive to do it like but my wife and I are OLD and we ain't getting any younger and we did not wan't to do it over. I was in the TV antenna and satellite TV business for YEARS and I have Learned it's better to do it right the FIRST TIME than to have to go back and do it OVER. With the TP-LINK Archer -7's I can access EVERTHING on my LAN in cluding all 3 of the TP-LINK Archer -7's. I have 6 ROKU'S, a TABLO OTA DVR and a security camera system and I can access the TABLO and the caneras from from any of our phones tablets and computers. The TP-LINK Archer -7's made the LAN work so much better than the old Linksys routers. All of our computers are conected with Eathernet. As I have reported on some of you other videos I have gotten 240 down but most of the time is 50 to 80 down 10 to 17 up. But is better than the Frontier DSL CRAP.

    Hi guys I'm kinda confused here.
    To my understanding
    1s gen had a ethernet connection which you can use and the wifi at the same time.
    Gen 2 doesn't have a ethernet connection but you can buy a adapter on the star link store and you can plug in a ethernet connection
    Now with that said im confused is back hauling ibeing able to run a ethernet cable from one router to another router and be able to have 2 separate wifi routers with this option ??
    Learning this stuff be nice
    I need to run a remote securty camera with wifi and the only option is star link with no other wifi options the camera needs to be over 500 feet away from the other
    Little help here thanks!

    Not sure why you say that the POE injector at the shed is a one way connection, there's no one way Ethernet ports that I've ever heard of. Why can't you just bypass the WiFi extender at the shed and plug the outdoor TP Link AP from its injector straight into a WAN port?

    • @jcristina
      @jcristina  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean the WiFi internet that you receive at the “shed” does not get brought into the shed with the attached Ethernet cable. It’s a one way connect. Sending data and power only. Not the other direction. You need to convert the WiFi signal to Ethernet with a extender. .

    • @futurecactus
      @futurecactus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jcristinaNot trying to be a jerk but I can't help but think this is not correct. APs move data both ways, upload and download and it should take data into and out of the shed via the attached Ethernet cable, the POE injector should have a POE port and a LAN or data port, is that LAN port plugged into anything?

    Hi @jcristina, I have been scouring the internet for this information and I think you've brought up the extract point I am trying to solve. I live in the country, in a mother in law tiny house with metal siding. I share the wifi with the main house which is 500 feet away, we just got Starlink and I am having a hard time getting my Netgear Nighthawk X6R8000 AC3200 to connect to the Starlink Wifi. We have the Nighthawk connected via ethernet cable from an outside AC point on the tiny house to a outside AC point on the main house. I think I just need to configure my wifi extender (Nighthawk) but I don't understand what you mean by logging in and finding all my wifi signals at the 11 minute mark and so on..Could you please explain a step by step on how to do this? I'd REALLLLY APPRECIATE it, this is causing serious tension on our property. Lol.

    I decided to cut the cable for my Ethernet dongle in half so I could install RJ45 connector on it in an attempt to place my Netgate SG-1100 in line between the satellite and my Starlink router. That made my satellite angry.
    There were 16 wires plus the bonding wire inside that dongle cable: the 8 wires you’d expect to see inside of a CAT 5E, plus each wire has its own “mini me” in there too.
    I saw a video where a guy cut his main cable to install a weatherproof connection for hood RV to a Gen 2 system so he didn’t have to run the cable out of a window when he set up. I think I am going to attempt this once I can determine whether the Netgate router will pass the PoE through itself and out to the satellite.

    I want to avoid the expression Jerry Rigging. For me it does not seem to be optimal to have an outdoor wireless access point outside an 8 inch concrete wall with or without rebars or a 26 gauge metal siding wall with a WiFi extender opposite on the inside to convert the wireless signal to Ethernet. Especially since a PoE Ethernet cable needs to power the access point from the inside. But I also know by experiences Jerry Rigging keeps the world spinning. Many Thanks for the YT videos, they are great!

      It would be a better value to simply place a TPlink Mesh Extender like I did on the inside of the metal building close to the location of the outside EAS225. You will get strong enough 5GHz inside and will be able to go from WiFi to Ethernet with no issue. Give it a shot and let me know. Be working here for about 6 months now.

      I kept my Gen 2 in the mix just because I want the stats and other information. That said, it’s not needed and yes the Starlink router is WiFi5 and not WiFi6.

    Interesting information, however, I am searching for a way to get Starlink Gen 3 connection to my detached craft room/building which is 50 feet away from my entrance door, which is 32 feet away from my Starlink router. (walls are wood and siding. A lot of windows) I purchased 2 Gen 3 routers when offered thinking I could then reach my detached space. I am not having success. Wondering if there is a fairly easy way to be successful.. I am a senior citizen and not very techy.

    So Starlink are working on wired backhaul? They really didn't think it through when they excluded an Ethernet port from their new router.

    J - Many thanks for your topics on SL! Do you have any info to convey regarding SL users whose dishes become paperweights when firmware updates are not regularly received? I am planning on storing my dish inside my cottage during the winter and I hope it will work when I return in the spring. I hope I don't fall victim to the same issue. Why would SL have this restriction?!? Why can't it just upload the necessary firmware like we do with our non-SL products and update as needed, and still operate in the meantime?

    Could I get some help on connecting the outdoor ap units?
    BLDing a outdoor ap can you set it up wirelessly?
    My situation is reverse BLDing a (home) has starlink and BLDing B (barn) i want to extend starlink to. Don't need the indoor extender ( I believe) since I don't have anything thick to go through and don't need wired.

    We laid our ethernet cables over ground to our metal out buildings (a well house and insulated container). They are protected by flexible conduit. The ground is very rocky so impractical to dig - believe me I have tried and have the back injuries to prove it. The ethernet cables aren't terribly expensive, nor was the flexible conduit. The indoor PoE access points feed the out buildings. We use these to control WIFI electric heaters.
    Another method is to elevate the ethernet cable but that would be uglier so we didn't do that.

    This entire thing could all be accomplished with ubiquiti routing, switching and AP’s with UISP dishes or their Building to Building bridge if you want the UniFi controller integration. When you’re doing this kind of set up it makes sense to go for more of a Prosumer/enterprise type of scenario as it gives you more options. You could supplement Ubiquiti routing for PfSense and as well if you want a more robust solution and keep the switching and AP’s for the controller integration. I personally don’t trust these no-name routers at all because they have no reputation and lack necessary features.

    While this will connect your 2 buildings you are using a very limited setup with the parts you included. No reason to use Mesh Wifi to connect. Use Ubiquiti Building to Building (UBB) and you will have wire speed between the 2 buildings. Wifi Extender in Building 2 a terrible way to get the connection in.
