  • Four 617 Squadron jets landed on HMS Queen Elizabeth in the North Sea. Full story here: www.navylookou...
The F35s began initial pilot qualification period right away. The jets will then exercise defending carrier group by maintaining combat air patrols (CAP), launching and flying strike missions on simulated land targets and being held on deck to launch at very short notice. This is the first complete deployment of 617 Squadron on the ship.

Compared to the Harrier, which was best described as performing a “controlled crash” on landing, the F-35 is so stable and easy to land, pilots can apparently perform landings hands-free. The technology is incredible. Love the RAF from across the pond! And LOVE the new carriers!

I have flown the A version demonstrator at Lockheed in 2008. I saw the potential in the aircraft then. Even Lockheed was unsure if the technology would mature in time before it needed to be in the hands of our warfighters. We pushed hard in every area and here we are today. It’s not perfect, but we are getting to a point of reliability that is on par with the legacy airframes we are retiring.

Not to mention the high production rates are causing the stealthy F-35 to fall in price even below our current 4++ generation of jet fighters. The net-centric F-35 will be so useful into todays high threat air defense environments.

One cannot help but think the USA would be well off getting a few QEC carriers. Building it using one of the Bechtel A1B reactors that the USS Ford utilizes for power could make sense. By doing this but using CATOBAR, and one reactor instead of two like the USS Ford, costs would be greatly reduced while the ship could use all of the aircraft of a Ford class. That reactor would provide the ship with 200-300 MW of electricity and unlimited range at a greatly reduced price than the Ford class.
Even a few ships just as the QEC are would greatly improve the Marines capabilities, but the single reactor version with CATOBAR would allow the navy to affordably keep more carriers active

I wouldnt want to be the Royal navy if it intends to sail in the South China Sea, especially considering the mutual tension arising from political differences on Hong Kong.

John Munro it’s all well everyone being hung ho and flag waving but what you are looking at is an expensive target populated by one of the most bug ridden American aircraft ever produced. In a WW3 situation this ship and its planes would be destroyed really quickly by a few Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. This vessel will only be any good against a below par enemy. They say the Generals are always fighting the last war. In this case the Admirals are too. Carriers are now in truth like battleships in WW2 .....obsolete!

This will allow Royal Navy's Carriers to Operate Aircraft like E-2D Hawkeye for long range ISR roles.
Royal Navy also needs to consider invest in SSKs to boost its Underwater fleet.
