    I actually wouldn't mind more colours for Sith blades to denote different values (like consular or guardian), but I can see why the red vs blue/green was used (mainly stage effects, would a sentinel's yellow blade look good on screen? Probably not).

    Red works really well as a dark side colour (red blade and black clothes is probably the most striking visual for a villain), but as this video points out, several dark siders have used other colours, especially if they used to be Jedi, so it's fine not to use red. My bigger issue is with the revised canon that says the red comes from "bleeding" crystals.
    I think I preferred it when the explanation was that a Sith's lightsaber crystal was synthetic (lightsaber crystals only occurred naturally on the planet of Ilum, which was closely guarded by the Jedi Order, making it impossible for a Sith to gain access), and the red colour was a result of the dark side energy they put into creating it. Luke's Return of the Jedi crystal was also synthetic, but wasn't red as he wouldn't have used the dark side to make it.
    I like the system you have in KOTOR where the colour is determined by the crystal, and to change the colour of the blade, you need to change the crystal.

    • @eugenebelford9087
      @eugenebelford9087 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Fully agree. I also think that this "bleeding"/ "cleansing" ... ultimately "soul-bonding" stuff is weird and not well thought through. I prefer a more engineering/ technical/ scientific explanation, too. ... I was just thinking: If the super-weapon on a Death Star works using these crystals, shouldn't it become immediately deep crimson after vaporizing Alderaan?

    • @1991jwp
      @1991jwp ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@eugenebelford9087 I don't mind an element of soul-bonding. Having a Jedi youngling explore a crystal cave in search of one they are particularly attuned to is very on-brand even in Legends (and was quite a good episode of The Clone Wars), but I think the colour should be a natural property of the crystal.
      The canon lore says you bleed a crystal by meditating on it and pouring your hatred and anger into it, which is why you don't get colour change in the Death Star superlaser (which surely would have happened after Jeddah in Rogue One if it was going to? Also, why is it green as opposed to any other colour?), or Anakin's lightsaber after Operation Knightfall.

      The inly reason for that is “fools kyber” which is indeed quite feeble and happens to be orange. Orange is a very powerful color! The heart of the guardian was orange (the crystal prophesied to appear to the chosen in the old republic). And the most selfless of Jedi use orange lightsabers (they’re more of pacifists). And dark Jedi used orange lightsabers (and were very powerful as well)! You could totally be a Sith and wield an orange lightsaber!

    When I was a kid, I noted that the Jedi used the basic three cool colors for lightsabers which were blue, green, and purple. I also noted that the Sith typically used red, so I came to the conclusion that there would be Sith out there that used the other two warm colors of yellow and orange. However, I found out that red was the only color they used... and sometimes purple. I almost would rather have the Jedi use the three cool colors and the Sith use the three warm colors. I think another reason why Exar Kun (if he were to be canonised again) wouldn't have bled his Lightsaber crystal red would be the fact that he viewed himself as immune to the Dark Side entirely. He thought his power so great that he found himself above the temptations of it and didn't see his turn to it as falling but rather as an ascension. I also believe the force itself isn’t necessarily good or bad, but more complex than anyones understanding. At least what we’ve seen so far. I really dig the concept of grey Jedi/Sith. It represents what could and should be, like everything, balance. On top of that, to be able to walk both sides of the force, and not go completely mad, shows how much of a level of mastery one has obtained.

A more pragmatic Sith who sees the dark side more as a means to an end, a path to power without needless cruelty (though cruelty can and is used when necessary). Someone walks the path of the dark side as the ultimate choice for moral freedom, not simply as a way to sew greater discord and destruction.

    I always had this headcanon that using a particular crystal color was a statement about a practitioner's commitment to the dogma attributed to that color, and someone using a color besides their profession would mean they adhered to a certain discipline above the dogma inherent to their station/job within their order, IE: if someone was a consular but used a different color, or multiple colors, it would be taken to mean the practitioner adheres to the practices or dogma those colors represent, meaning someone who was a sith but also wielded both red and green sabers would have the same respect a consular has for the force, while still displaying sith values, as opposed to just simply having the dogmatic approach the sith usually have to the force.
    *Edit:* In the case of the consular using a different color other than green that might have been (according to my headcanon) a consular that places an emphasis on learning skills from that other dogma, while still adhering to the consular philosophies (ie, a jedi master with poor control over force powers but with great fencing or inquisitor skills, etc, yet still working within the consular role, using a green crystal representing their spiritual path and another for their chosen path of discipline).
    Then again every sith or jedi could have _their own reasons_ for doing that, and maybe its a statement in another sense, against their dogma or something like that.

    It would actually be an interesting idea to see more Sith utilizing Jedi specific colored lightsabers. With me for instance, when I chose to join the Sith Order after defecting from the Jedi Order, I intentionally kept my old Green & Blue lightsabers, as a constant reminder of the life I left behind. And also as a reminder of why I left the Jedi Order in the first place. I'd also keep my old Jedi lightsabers in case I was assigned a covert mission by the Sith Council to infiltrate certain Jedi Temples. Lastly, I would only use my Jedi lightsabers unless my Sith lightsabers were damaged, or for special occasions when I'm going head to head with Jedi Padawans, Knights, or Masters. As an insult to my former Jedi brothers and sisters.

  • @RelativelyBest

    Personally, I find the entire discussion on saber colors and what they "mean" to be a tiresome over-focus on trivialities. I think it's telling that lightsaber colors are never brought up _once_ in the entire movie canon. You could replace all lightsaber blades with white ones and it would not change anything.
    From what I understand, the original plan was for Jedi to use blue sabers while Sith used red. And as much as I like the green ones, I can't help but think that would have been a lot neater. It would have fitted the binary good vs evil theme and given both sides a sense of uniformity and symmetry that would have made them contrast clearly from each other.
    The introduction of Luke's green saber was a makeshift solution to a minor issue that George Lucas was probably a bit too worried about, but it served to break the symmetry and opened up the possibility of more colors. And I _get_ why people went nuts over it, favorite colors and so on, but it made the whole thing messy. Next we got Mace Windu's purple lightsaber, and I'm pretty sure the only reason for that is because Sam Jackson personally requested it and Lucas agreed. See: Lucas himself does not appear to think lightsaber colors are important or meaningful. He apparently decided this sort of thing mostly on whims.
    Now we're at a point where Sith and other darksiders have red sabers while Jedi can have blue, green, purple, yellow and white sabers. Which is _kinda weird_ when you think about it. Remember how back in 80s and 90s cartoons the good guys and bad guys would shoot differently colored lasers at each other? For example, in Transformers the Autobots had yellow lasers and the Decepticons has purple ones. Those are completely arbitrary color choices with no particular lore explanation: The only reason for it was to make it clear who was shooting at who. Now imagine if the Decepticons shot purple lasers while Autobots could use lasers of any color _except_ purple. Even kids would find that confusingly arbitrary and go: "What's _that_ supposed to mean?"
    But anyway, now that we have the whole damn rainbow covered, I say at least try to balance it out. Like, _at least_ let the Sith have purple. That's a perfectly good color for bad guys. And green is, like, the most morally ambivalent color of all, with tons of villains rocking it. (See: The Borg, Death Eaters, the Fel, the Nightsisters of Dathomir.)
    What I'm basically saying is: If we're going for variation, then let's go all out and stop pretending that it matters. We don't need to make excuses for why a Sith would have a green saber. Maybe it just looks cool, okay?

    I think it depends on the sith, most of the sith on this list are more impactful/known in the Star Wars universe, so it almost feels like only they wielded them because they were stronger than other sith or more important, I think in cases like that, it’s perfectly fine, plus in the case of anakin, despite turning to the dark side the blue blade always fit his character really well so it didn’t feel out of place despite him becoming a sith

    I always saw the Sith using red lightsabers as symptom of their overzealous identity shift from the jedi order. I liked how the lightsaber just used to be an important weapon for the jedi. The colors were more like a degree, that once awarded, the jedi could change at their leisure. I hate how lightsabers, are more strictly regimented, and have become almost more important than the jedi themselves.

    Comes to warb null it's a no brainer why he had a red and Green blade look at the ware the hidden emitter is it's below the hoop that attached to his belt thus hidden so the reason is stealth and miss information when he's first encountered in the comics they thought he was a dark Jedi first and not a sith apprentice

  • @venkelos6996
    @venkelos6996 ปีที่แล้ว

    As the one who so constantly likes to wax about Legends, I have to say ivstill miss the synthetic crystals backstory, when Sith didn't "bleed" crystals, but simply had to make their own, and it was a side effect of that process, and that Luke perfected it to make his green one, in RotJ. No reason otherwise to expect Kenobi had a spare, unused crystal, just sitting in his shack, and it was there when Luke needed it, and accepted him.
    I don't mind the villains sticking to one color; I feel it sort of helps them appear to embrace their choice, and show solidarity in purpose, but I guess I don't just want to see red restricted to them, when Legends Leia, I believe, also had a red saber (that she basically never used). Still, ido personally appreciate that Kun kept blue, even though he was as evil as they came.

As far as I remember, the comic states nothing about it so fans interprent it anyhow, just like with Luke having a red saber during DE.

    Red light sabers were inherently less stable stable but more more deadly, exar cun used blue blades To stabilize the already unstable shot halted double sided lightsaber.
    It was a practical reason not a representational reason, He was a power hungry Sith after all.

    He has no love for the Jedi, he simple would claim that he has a true understanding of the Sith Code.

    Being reflective of their philosophies is the major reasoning - idk enough about Revan but from a layman's perspective he just carries around the purple saber to look cool & he in turn feels like a major departure from Lucas' original vision. Like starkillers backwards stance doesn't seem practical for immediate blocking or striking but the whole concept of force unleashed seemed to take the whole of Lucas' vision & turn it up to a ridiculous level intentionally, so it mostly works. Revan makes the whole legends universe feel like a joke just in his appearance alone. 'He was so cool he got both sides to respect him' doesn't help in the slightest with this but again idk a lot here
