    I'll stick with the official Fact Files version from the 2000s:
    Color doesn't matter, there are no arcane rituals involved in creating a lightsaber. They are purely mechanical devices that are dangerous to the wielder if not mastered (hence why they were rare outside of a Jedi's hands) and every Jedi used a crystal of the color they simply liked best, if they had the luxury. (Luke's 2nd lightsaber was made with a synthetic crystal grown on Tatooine, and the blade ended up being green since Luke didn't have the time/knowledge/cared enough to make it another color.
    So yes, Jedi can have red lightsabers, Sith can have blue ones - as a matter of fact, Jerecs 7 Dark Jedi from the first Jedi Knights game have different colors.

      I think it's reasonable to assume that there would develop traditions over time, but I agree, I think that later Legends and Canon lightsaber colors are too fixed. That's boring. Especially in Canon, the vast majority of lightsabers are blue, green or red. That's what George wanted, but it's boring.

    3:35 I think that's supposed to be Depa Billaba, but I could be wrong.
    Personally, I like the KotOR rules of red and sometimes purple = Sith and green/blue/yellow/orange = Jedi according to their different roles. In my head canon, that rule was abolished during the Ruusan Reformation, but some Jedi like Qui-Gon, Yoda and Obi-Wan still follow that tradition. Also, I'd think yellow fell out of fashion because yellow crystals aren't as widespread and also the role of the Jedi Sentinel wasn't needed as much after the New Sith Wars. When it comes to purple, I remember reading somewhere that it represents kind of a union between the light and the dark side (blue and red mixed) and that's why Mace Windu uses it, because it fits to his use of Vaapad. One thing that always annoyed me a little is that even most Dark Jedi use red ligthsabers, even though they aren't Sith. However, that can be explained by the fact that red lightsaber crystals are synthetic, so they're easier to get than natural ones, which are mostly found on worlds controlled by the Jedi Order.
    Edit: I think it's okay if a couple of Sith use Jedi colors and vice versa, but it shouldn't be exaggarated. I'm especially okay when ancient Sith use different colors, because back then, it seemed to be more accepted than later.

    To add Asoka "used" red lightsabers in canon... by making them into white/grey ones. So in canon, there is nothing stopping a Jedi from using red lightsabers it just really weird for them to and they would have to get it off a sith General Grievous style... Also I believe if someone activated a let's say pink lightsaber and then sold it you could buy it and then take out the crystal and have a pink lightsaber of your own just like in legends.
    Also, a sith never had to use a red lightsaber it just makes them feel more sithy is all.

    A'Sharad Hett's lighsabers are green in the later Clone Wars era comics. This could be explained as him simply changing the crystals, but in the Kenobi novel his father Sharad Hett was said to have had a green lightsaber, which became one of A'Sharad's sabers. This seems to firmly retcon the lightsabers as having been green all along.

    I will always prefer the legends stance that a lightsaber blade color was influenced by the crystal, and the crystal could be any material that could (conceivably) focus a beam, not just kyber. This meant that blade color was more a reflection of the individual rather than simply an arbitrary sign of organizational allegiance.

      It could be argued that for the Jedi of the Clone Wars era being part of the Jedi Order WAS the defining "individual" trait of most Jedi, since they were raised from infancy in the Jedi Temple under the strict extreme-Lightside dogmas of an increasingly radical organization.
      Within that framework I think there seems to be somewhat of a correlation between color and personality, with blue saber wielders being more hotheaded and fitting the "guardian of the weak" archetype while green ones tended to be calmer, carrying themselves like wise men (though not necessarily actually being wise). Windu being the former while also channeling his Darkside tendencies through his Vaapad lightsaber form is a mix of blue and red, purple.
      Red meanwhile is a reflection of the similarly extreme-Darkside Sith ideology, where instead of allowing the crystal to choose the wielder based on temperament they choose it themselves arbitrarily, usually through ritual combat, and force their will upon it like they try to do to the Force itself, causing it to "bleed" red.

    The ridiculous way the new Canon handles lightsaber crystals is so emblematic of how how the way the new canon handles continuity just doesn't work it has such ridiculously strict rules for things that really should be more loosely regulated (like lightsaber color) and ridiculously lax rules for things that should be rigidly regulated (hyperspace) and then they just end up weasling their way around the rules that they themselves set up, so why do they even make them?, That and the "everything is equally Canon" garbage which is just clearly untrue because they contradict themselves constantly is the reason why the new Canon already feels like it's less consistent than Legends was it's because the new Canon makes such grandiose statements about being a perfectly consistent universe that it just makes you notice that it isn't more, Legends never claimed to be a perfectly consistent universe it was just as consistent as they could make it which is why the contradictions were less of a big deal That and I think Legends understood better what to regulate to keep the universe more consistent and what not to regulate to not stifle creativity

    • @kevinvassago
      @kevinvassago 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Legends was not the shining example of continuity that you make it out to be, infact legends contradicted itself so much they had to make various levels of canon (G canon, B canon, C canon, etc.) So your right, it wasnt perfect. Star wars has actually never been more continuous than it is now and it's truly nice to not have to follow that tier canon bullshit. The Jedi are strict in their ways like that because that's what George Lucas wanted, in legends everything else was made up by authors who didn't have access to prequel knowledge, so they just made stuff up, and then was later retconed by George Lucas. So it's better now that it follows Lucas's vision with viable explanations than stupid retcons that have to explain why the previous comic/book creators made something one way but are different in the movies or according to Lucas himself, like with lightsaber colors for an example. Also, canon does contradict itself a FEW times, but it happened way more in legends. Some examples are: in legends a particular Jedi could have died literally in 3 or 4 different ways, also Han confronted 4 different bounty hunters on ord mantel just to explain one throw away line, and multiple different versions of why and how the clone wars happened. Those are just a few major contradictions that legends suffered from. New canon is no longer like that, it's linear, and if that stifles creativity then they need to find more creative authors. But it's more consistent and an actual linear story is better in my opinion.

    • @sammywhite5127
      @sammywhite5127 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@kevinvassago The tiered canon system is used by most expanded canons in fiction because it is the only sensible way to handle a universe of that scale, you cannot make it 100% consistent it's not possible, secondly you really do not want to invoke what George Lucas wanted Star wars to be Star wars got worse each time he touched it after the original trilogy I will remind you, have you seen his suggestions for the sequel trilogy they look pretty bad not as bad as what we got obviously but that's not saying much the sequel trilogy we got was absolute pig swill, thirdly of course Canon currently contradicts itself less than Legends did, it's existed for a fraction of the time but it's already well on its way to being less consistent than Legends was at this point in its existence Even just the new movies aren't consistent with the existing movies hell the new movies aren't even consistent with the other movies in their own trilogy or even on several occasions within themselves as a singular film, not to mention the relative scale of contradictions I'll take thousands of tiny date and age contradictions like Legends probably has over the few massive fuck off Galaxy destroying contradictions and canon breaks that exist just within the three films of the sequel trilogy most prominently hyperspace ram which as long as that is Canon none of the movies work anymore like literally nothing in the Star wars universe makes sense if that's Canon not to mention the other fuck ups the sequel trilogy makes, next onto your specific examples I can tell you're definitely invoking Shaak Ti which is a classic mistake, she has one Canon death within the Legends continuity The one from The Force unleashed The others you are referring to are the Anakin one and the grievous one both of which are from deleted scenes which are not considered Canon unless supported by secondary material which they were not, next the Han example I will admit a bit redundant but to be fair it does make sense that a wanted man would have more than one running with bounty hunters in a lawless place like ord mantel, as for the clone wars contradictions you're overegging it a bit there are two versions of how it happened one from the prequels and one from the Thrawn trilogy and honestly it doesn't matter that much because if you just ignore the specifics of how they say the clone wars happened the Thrawn trilogy still works fine, and finally okay so you prefer linear stories Don't see what that has to do with anything and I honestly don't care I'll take a lot of good and interesting stories that don't necessarily 100% mesh over a boring streamline story that still doesn't 100% mesh, anyway I don't see what this has to do with what I said, I never said it was a perfect continuity I said it was a better way to handle continuity than the way new Canon does it despite the flaws and you haven't really provided an argument to the contrary.

This leads to the issues you pointed out with Zahn and Luceno and Zahn's subpar performance (I need to read more from Luceno before I can say anything on him).
