In 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake devastated the town of Minamisanriku in Miyagi prefecture. Now, more than a decade later, the town is still working on recovery efforts. In this award-winning Eat! Meet! Japan experience, Shizuka and Cheesie met the people of Minamisanriku working hard on recovering the local gastronomic economy.
Shizuka and Cheesie go out on a boat to harvest local oysters, famous across Japan for their fresh taste. After the boat adventure, they explore the local winery and learn how to properly shuck oysters. The day ends with a meal of fresh oysters, paired wines, and a lovely meal of local ingredients.
    What is Eat! Meet! Japan?
Eat! Meet! Japan is a project that recognizes and promotes the best Japanese food experiences nationwide. Commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF), the project provides an environment where tourists can enjoy unique Japanese food experiences even after multiple visits to Japan. Eat! Meet! Japan brings people together through food and provides a window into the culture of the areas represented. These award-winning experiences demonstrate Japanese food as a gateway into topics like history, spirituality, sustainability, local agriculture, and craftsmanship.

Glad you were able to come out of your shell and try the oysters! As a personal aside, I didn't understand wine whatsoever in my early 20's. Then I paired a good Cabernet with an incredible steak. In that one mouthful, I suddenly understood the universe. Thanks as always, Shizuka!

The very first time I saw Shizuka on video, she was bouncing around on the deck of a boat. The creatures to be harvested were isopods. I had never had someone so charming speak in English about Japanese food culture and I still take great pleasure in her work. I used to eat raw oysters when I was young but one day I was eating one and that was it. I never went back. One of my favorite Japan by food episodes was the sake making when they were fermenting some of it underwater in the bay. I'm still fascinated by it. Thanks Japan by food!

Thanks for the comment! First you should go to Sendai, maybe using the shinkansen for Hokkaido. Then, by public transportation: Miyagi Kotsu Highway Bus (all day) runs 6 times a day. Get on at the Miyako Sendai Express Bus Center at the west exit of Sendai Station (platform 40) → get off at Shizugawa Station (BRT) and walk 10 mins. By car: Take the Sanriku Expressway "Shizugawa IC" exit.
