Peugeot 504 1976 Intercooled Turbodiesel! Not the average Peugeot turbodiesel.

  • This is a short introduce clip of my 1976 Peugeot 504 GL what I converted to a 2.5 liter Peugeot Indenor diesel. Before I installed the engine I turbocharged it with a Valmet tractor turbo and a new 3" thick intercooler. It also has Ba10/5 transmission and limited slip diffrential. It pulls hard. I drove 16.2@140km/h at 1/4 mile last summer with it. I beat MV6 Omega, supercharged VW Corrado and run even with a Toyota Timang with roll cages and a race engine. I also have 5 other 504's. And currently one 505(seen in the video) because of it's XD2S engine for my 504 Dangel.

    Nice one. My dad did put a TD engine of a 1983 505 GRDT in his 1976 504 GLD back in the 80's. It was quite fast: 190 kmh on the speedo, so around 170-175 kmh real speed.
    I still remember when I was kid, and that my dad was overtaking Mercedes 190D, 300D or BMW324D that couldn't follow the old 504 GLD on the highway. :)

    Ah, Peugeot and it's Indenor engine. I have a 1995 Peugeot 504 with an Indenor XD2P, with 130.000 kilometers, in process of being rebuilt with new suspension, I could start the car on -2c in one try, such a perfect engine... Here's hoping I can get a turbo and some more HP for long travels, but I love my Peugeot, such a humble but infallible car.

    For a diesel engine, that's quite a jump in performance! If only we Americans were lucky enough to be offered with diesel engine performance. I've ridden as a passenger in plenty of diesel trucks and buses, but not many diesel cars or small trucks.

    the flange to the stock exhaust manifold because it wouldn't seal up 100% right without the weld.. Only thing you need to do when turning the manifolds is that you need to fabricate brackets to the stock brake booster vacuum pump because it will be towards the firewall if you flip the manifolds :) I hope this helps.

    @meoneko Thanks! Yes you could, but xd88 has wet cylinder liners and that could be a problem in Peugeot diesel engines. But yes, it can be done with moderate boost! But don't expect it to perform like this bigger version does!

    Thanks Jason! I think it perfoms very well considering that I only turned the fuel screw to the max, installed turbo and intercooler. I estimate that it will do 0-62mph in low 8 or high 7. I did a 1/4 mile with it in 16.2sec@140km/h(87mph) :)

    @ffagerberg Thanks!! Nice to know someone else is doing same things than me! I have never owned a 404 but for my understanding diesel engine is not tilted on the passanger side on 404 like it is on 504. So If you have xd2 (2.3 liter) on your 404 now. You should have no problems of getting the xd3s on there. The original turbo engine is not very wide compared to the non turbo. But you have to change the oil pan and possibly oil pump from your older xd2 engine to the xd3s. Also the engine mounts

    Nice sounding diesel. It's just how a diesel is supposed to sound. It seems to perform quite well as well. It seems to keep up with traffic well.

    I know! :) That Peugeot XD3 engine delivers 76hp and around 150nm stock. I figured that it will now produce around 150-160hp and possibly 350-400nm of torque. It's that fast because the 504 only weighs around 1300kg/2850 pounds. That's the way big older diesels usually go. If the horsepowers doubled, the torque could have tripled.     Hey Mecksi. Find a 2.5 liter with Bosch VE injection pump. Not the Rotodiesel one. Google the usual tuning tips for Bosch Ve. Like turn the max fuel screw. Add boost and EGT and oil temp gauges+ an intercooler and a little bigger turbo than it has stock. Try to get around 1.5bar/ 25 psi of boost and that's it :)

    @wallycata78 Hi. That is a 505 engine with 505 transmission. We did not get turbo engines in 504's in here. But This engine did not have a turbo either originally.
    But basicly you can get the same power with little bigger turbo from a xd2s as well. But you have to have a Bosch VE pump in it. Thanks for your comment, your english is fine!

    Hi, excellent video. I have a 404 1977 1.6 petrol I want to rebuild. I'm thinking of fitting a XD3 turbo (if it fits) along with the 5 gear gearbox and limited slip diff. Have you come across anything on these lines by any chance? I seem to recall the engine compartment for the 404 was slightly smaller than a 504's. Any guidance will be much appreciated!!

    @Soussmeboules Nice :) I bet it was extremely funny to overtake those cars in the eighties! One of my best moments were to overtake an Mv6 Omega and supercharged Vw Corrado(G60?) in a drag race(1/4 mile days) with my old diesel Peugeot... :D
    By the way, I have read that only 76 model 504's had four round headlamps in Germany? Did you fathers one have 4 round head lamps?

    Hello Erska: thank you very much ror your quick reply. I already found a 2.5 Turbo with the Bosch VE from 87 and bought right away with aprox. 100K.Its looks very good and clean but til now I hadnt the chance to start it.Need a waterpump and some small parts to test it hopefully in spring. Google VE tuning thank you for the hint ;-) Do you have a foto from your inlet and exhaust fabrication? Would be highly interested since I need to relocate the turbo to accomodate the starter on my Willys.Thx

    No it was a french model with normal headlamps, but in Germany main of the model I saw were with regular headlamps. I saw just a few with these 4 headlamps "US style" in Germany. But I saw many 504 from Denmark with it. Our car was dark green metallic with beige leather interior and sunroof. It clocked allmost 500000 kms.

    Yes I have the 504. It's under a conversion for a 3 liter 24valve supercharged gas engine. But don't worry. I have had the same 1978 504 gld diesel since 1980 and I'll die before I get rid of it. I have 8 504's. My newest addition is mint 1995 Impala SS with 80k miles.

    o, what shwitzer turbo is that? little slow on spool. currently building my 79 504 with a 85 xd2s(2.3l) gonna do a k03 with a hx30 over it, the pumps have plenty of fuel :), and arp headstuds and mls gasket.

    @CTDErska they have stretched the engine on the wrong way for car use. They have stretched it on the back. The flywheel would be between the front seats! :D

    :) That's crazy! I've heard of people modifying a diesel to deliver more horsepower and torque, for more performance. How much power and torque does the engine deliver now? Do you know?

    hi, i'm from Argentina,it surprise me how works that XD3, here the same xd3 it doesn't ensamble in 504 but there is in 505 version with 10 transmition, sorry my english, greetings from Neuquen, Argentina.

    Hello very nice!I'm currently renovating an peugeot 404 familiale diesel in sweden and i'm trying to figure out if i can fit a xd3 turbo without intercooler in the 404 without cutting in the engine bay to make clearance for turbo. I want a easy installation and my old xd2 engine is blown, and i found a very well kept xd3 turbo for a very good price. I tried to ask the swedish peugeot forum but got no answers. any comments highly appreciated.

    Oh right! Sorry I forgot. The engine I have is a non turbo 2.5 liter originally. I just turned the stock intake and exhaust manifolds upside down. They can be turned without any problems. But I think it can not be done with turbo manifolds. So I suggest that you find naturally aspirated exhaust and intake. The exhaust needs little work to get the turbo flange fitted. I used 3 bolts to get the 20mm thick metal plate bolted to the NA manifold and then studs to get the turbo there. I also welded

    Hi. Yest it bolts right in but stay away from the Xd90!! It's a wet cylinder sleeve engine and it has very bad reputation of mixing up water and oil due the dropping cylinder liners due the old age. Try to buy a Xd2 or Xd3. Xd3S would be the best. You also need a different clutch housing and start motor when swapping the engines :)

    Hello, I have a 1974 504 and it's a manual transmission car, when I bought the last metal radiator it was for an automatic transmission. It has a Trans cooler. I wish to convert to an engine oil cooler.
    On the engine block my xd90 has 4 , 1/4npt brass plugs.with heat I removed 2 of them. 1 plug is just behind the injection pump the other is behind the spin on oil filter. Witch one could feed the oil ooler, witch one could receive from the cooler? I live in a hot climate.
    These cars run hot and my mercedes diesels all have oil coolers from the factory.
    There are 4 plugs on the side of the engine block 2 behind the starter 1 has a banjo line on it that runs behind the block the other is plugged.2 more plugs on the edge behind the oil filter and 1 behind the injection pump. Please help me choose the flow lines and what remaining plug can I connect a oil pressure guage to.

    Hey, sorry no I don't. Except something not worth for releasing. Currently all my Peugeots are in project to get them finished. That brown other diesel in that video is 505 turbo diesel. I just took the engine out of it for my 504 Dangel break.

    @ffagerberg Also keep in mind that 1982 and newer engines have 8 bolt flywheel bolt pattern, not 6 like the pre 1982. So you have to find suitable starter flywheel clutch setup. Not impossible but I'd just like to let you know. Please, DO IT! :) -Erska, Finland.

    Hey. There are some easy engine swaps. Buy a 505 turbodiesel engine with a Bosch VE injection pump and turn up the fuel(google Bosch VE fuel screw) and add a boost elbow or plug the wastgate line.

    @meoneko My girlfriend father has the famous 6 cylinder 3.2 liter Volvo Penta Indenor diesel. It is basicly just a stretched xd90. It has also wet cylinder liners and the crappy CAV rotodiesel injection pump, which is jammed also on my girlfriends fathers engine. Volvo is also the only manufactor who made the 6 cylinder model as far as I know. It is way too long for the tight 504 or 604 engine compartments. And too heavy. You can get the measurements by adding 2 cylinders for xd90. And besides.

    I have a 1976 Peugeot 504 Break with a XD90 and I installed a turbo from a 505 (not sure which motor) and now I just need to turn up the pump some. Does anyone know how to turn up the Roto Diesel pump or where I can find out? because I don't really want to change injection pumps.

      i dont know but ive been told they are standyne or another brand made with license so thats a start. but i would swap to a bosch ve is you can find a stock ve setup. but you need to change the whole timing housing, ones chain driven and the other is gear driven

      Hey. It's not connected on the spare parts brown 505 seen in the beginning but it is connected on the green 504. Vacuum pump can be seen just under the turbo.

      its a diesel and it has a vacuum pump because diesel make poor vacuum due to no throttle body. the only thing that it runs on most of these 504's is the power brakes, nothing to do with the engine so its not necessary but i imagine the brakes would suck, like stopping the car when its off all the time.
