I was a teenager when I found a 1981 Peugeot 505 Turbodiesel for sell at a credit union. It had been repossessed and was a bargain. It was beautiful, gold with tan interior. It ran perfectly. I knew absolutely nothing about diesels at that time and just drove the thing. It became sluggish and supper slow over time and had zero performance. I had it serviced at a Peugeot dealer two hours away and it was fine, until a few months later it became very slow again. Had no acceleration. I ended up trading it for a Mercedes. But, 30 years of driving Mercedes diesels taught me that all that was ever wrong with the Peugeot was clogged fuel filters! LOL...teenagers!!! I wish I still had it. It was such a nice driving and riding car, and always reliable.
Diesel in car, is about to get things done... Not about speeding, not about acceleration (!) My 1975 Mercedes 240D 3.0, was a workhorse, in 6 years I've made 270k kilometers (Poland).
I drove a diesel 505 SW for three days when my ‘84 505 GL gasoline car was in for its first service, at 1500 mi I believe. The loaner was dangerously slow from a stop, but took off like a rocket when going 60 mph. I know a SW owner who put 1.2 M miles on his diesel! The diesel was tiring for me to drive. Vibration through the accelerator and slow performance. It might have been an automatic. I also disliked the automatic gasoline version. Too slow. The 5 speed manual was fine however. I drove the car for 25 years. Wish they’d have kept making them!
Hello Jeff, I just bought mine is a 85 505 automatic turbo, with 89k miles, problem is mine is really slow taking off even if I try to downshift manually, any ideas.
I may buy one and need to know how to do thee tweets on it a 1981 505 T with 36k miles on it The price is a little high but low miles and nearby I'm interested in it. I've a 504 wagon non turbo.i already found a new pair of euro headlights for the 505 Barely found a new pair for my 504. All my euro cats it's a must have.
the most beautiful and classy and reliable car ever built .I prefer having 505 rather then a modern car .
