Honestly, as a younger guy with a rather… complicated relationship with the metal genre, I feel like this piece resonates with me because it embodies the sort of dark energy that I like in metal while avoiding the most obnoxious elements that are unfortunately all too common in it.
Valentina Lisitsa plays, and without any notes, my favorite piece by Liszt, the Totentanz,a paraphrase on Dies Irae. Miss, they should call you LISZTica :-). Bravo! Brawo!

Brian Abrom The Dies Irae is a very old chant from the Mass For The Dead. As you note, it has been used extensively over the centuries in various contexts- none, however, as wild and complex as this.

wtf this piece is so hard yet her hands flung around hit notes correctly. I have been playing piano for long but cant never imagine what league is Lisitsa XD
Exceptional! I loved the balance between soloist and orchestra. This is the finest performance I've heard, and I've listened to many versions of this piece. Valentina is magnificent. Brava!
Once Liszt told a student who was playing the héroïque polonaise: "I don't care how fast you can play those octaves - I want to hear horses galopping menacingly". Totentanz - death laughing and dancing in our face. At first it seems like he is dancing alone, but soon enough we join him without being conscious of it. And rather than being afraid, we will come to realise that without him we could not be. V. Lisitsa is a good pianist, but to my ears the only really inspired performance of this piece is that of Michelangeli. Cheers!
It's great to listen to this piece as it sounds as a whole instead of just from the bass section 😂 amazing piece I love how dramatic it is. Rather fun the play on a bass
P.S. I came thinking it would be boring and may have needed to read a book throughout! Boy was I wrong. One second it started, the next, it was finished! Very good!
Obviously, Rachmaninoff was familiar with this piece when he composed the Paganini variations. Never heard it on radio, wonder why. Had the record ages ago (Alexander Brailowsky?)
This piece should be always play twice. On the first try you have never have right amount of feelings. I thought this is most difficult song to play ever not only for manual skills but actually for this extraordinary amount of so different feelings. This one is best i know but always is some things that was lost.
+Istari Pallando Wow... you wrote a sentence that was genuinely unintelligible due to a typo (or two; even with a comma it still doesn't exactly make sense) and you're upset with him for trying to clarify? Yeesh.
first time I've heard this with an orchestra. not to my taste. much prefer the 14:53 studio version---- would be embarrassed to admit how many times I've listened to/watched that version. i've also seen 2 live performances of hers. However the piano solo parts are very nice.
Ed Herold Don't be embarrassed. I love her solo version just as much as the orchestra version because it is as challenging. The amount of views and audience engagement of her solo version over the years has taken a life of it's own. Although I was so intrigued to actually see what the Orchestra version sounded like and a bigger blessing to see Val be apart of it.
I love how the pianist is playing this really loud, dark piece in a giant pink tule dress
LOL ! Loved your comment!
Yeah, that's because she's Valentina Lisitsa!
Schubert + Liszt + Lisitsa = Perfection
Actually, Valentina combines the piano solo version with the orchestral version in a number of spots like 8:46 to 9:40. It's pretty effective.
Liszt - the first metal head
No actually...vivaldi...
The first metal composer was Paganini.
A lot of baroque, classical and romantic musicians were metal head before it existed lol
But this belongs to best of metal head - in my opinion.

Really nice camerawork. Also, loved seeing the passionate expressions on the pianist's face.
The creases over the eyes were a little bit off putting sometimes.

Well, fair enough. After all, Barenboim said that to an extent you shouldn't judge a piece of music by the choreography of the players.
