I love this recording as well. However, if you pay close attention you will notice that she differs from Liszt's solo version in a number of places - Liszt's solo version cuts a small amount of music from the piano-orchestra original. Lisitsa restores those short sections eg. from 14:01 - she also adds octaves at certain place. This doesn't take anything away from her playing - it actually might add an extra layer of awesomeness. :) For Liszt's solo version if you have an affinity for clarity I would recommend Arnaldo Cohen's recording on Naxos. It is on youtube, as well as Spotify.
since you read it yourself, let me just add that your 3d movement of Bethoven sonata 27 in hamburg rehearsal is legendary. I've never heard thrills so precise and melodic lines so crystal clear in that movement in my whole life))
bro have you seen 황선용Seon-Yong Hwang, look at his youtube chanal and his performance of Amedee Mereaux's Etude Op. 63 no. 45? It might change your mind because he is the only non midi recording that I've heard play it well.
@@swagifier1170 That guy is good and all but his actual recordings are pretty bad. In fact I can say he's an amazing pianist that as viewers we have yet to experience the true potential of. Valentina is definitely in a league of her own, but it doesn't mean other leagues are beneath or above her. I should note this guy that seemingly vanished from the internet if you enjoy Seon-Yong Hwang. th-cam.com/video/_VW2ms-jpCY/w-d-xo.html He did a lot of things few pianists dared to even try. Seon-Yong Hwang wasn't the first to do many of the things people think he was, just a lot of the really good guys from 5-12 years ago have disappeared to the bottom of the internet. Kinda sad to say we also only have mostly recordings from older pianists that aren't even alive today, meaning little to no video evidence of most rare music.
Just repeated notes. You have to use staccato on same note but change fingers. It works on grands but not so much on uprights as repetition notes are to do with gravity of the actions and the hammer can be struck quicker due to depressing the key only halfway down before it can play the note again whereas uprights need the hammer jack to return
Listening to this again 10 years later I noticed that this is actually pretty much Lisitsa's own transcription! :) She should give herself credit in the video description! This is markedly different in many places to Liszt's own piano solo version! Funnily enough Lisitsa here is actually more faithful to Liszt's piano-orchestra version than Liszt is in his piano solo version. Liszt omitted the fantastic section from 14:01 to 14:13 in his solo version. She also adds a couple octaves here and there, and the final right hand figuration from 14:13 is entirely her own - as far as I can tell. An incredible effort on Lisitsa's part - great ideas, wonderfully executed.
She actually borrowed from the structure of the two piano version. And also is liberal with doubling bass notes which is a common thing. Still this is the best version I've heard ever
@@johnphilipps1810 You are right, the col legno section is included in the two-piano version. I haven't heard other pianists do it in the solo version - my favourite recording of this is Arnaldo Cohen, on his Naxos complete Liszt disc No.1 - as far as I am concerned everything on that disc is played to perfection. Great balance of non-tonal late Liszt and Glanzzeit barnstormers.
As someone who has, by playing a couple of Chopin etudes, tasted the incredible speeds, precision, and labor concert pianists put into their work - I still cannot comprehend what I just saw in this video. It seems supernatural. Valentina you are amazing - one of the great artists of our century.
there was a myth that one of Liszt's performances was so powerful that by the time he was done, he was on his third piano. It's actually quite believable after lisztening to this piece.
In the past I have been critical of Miss Lisitsa's phrasing and musicality, despite flawless technique. Her Totentanz is like listening to Liszt himself. There are a few pieces that need no orchestration accompaniment and Miss Lisitsa has proven this. At 10:56 she turns the keys into horns...this is why Miss Lisitsa is not going anywhere soon; she is one of the elite that play with ten fingers...not two hands. Thank you, and may your relationship with Franz continue to grow. Cheers!

Around 3:00 it starts to sound like an orchestra, which hardly seems possible from only two hands on one piano. Wonderful composition and performer. She plays with great power, and draws a rich sound from that piano!
I do not have words adequate to properly describe Valentina's performance. Perfection is inadequate. As to some previous comments on the camera shots of Valentina's face..... Usually i do not like to see facial expressions of the pianist. Too often they seem to either be in pain or the theatrics of ecstasy are annoying, to say the least. But the expression of relaxed, quiet joy on Valentina is beautiful. One can see she is singing the piece in her head. When she is hitting all those big octave jumps around 10:00, you can see her mouthing Pa, Pa, Pa. When she goes through certain sections, there is a little smile. She is enjoying herself immensely, and it adds to my enjoyment.
I just can’t stop of listen this masterpiece. It’s not only about the perfect technique you use Valentina, it’s about the ability to make us feel this piece. And I have a problem with it, when I listen a piece of classic music played by you, I can’t listen other person playing the same piece, you make the pieces your own. This is something that I use to suffer also with opera. I've come back to this video after 3 years, Totentanz is still my favorite piece by Liszt, and in large part I owe it to this great video, Valentina is a solid and wonderful performer, soon I'll start practicing this solo piano version :- )
I can' t believe that in the presence of such virtuousity some one below is commenting how well the piano is tuned. She is ALWAYS marvelous. Her memorization and touch are impeccable. I love her.
Outstanding. Nothing less. I am now, and have been a fan for quite some time. I find it interesting that some folks have a propensity to micro-analyze this phenomenal young woman, when it is more than evident that what she is capable of is far beyond the ability of most professional pianists. Armchair warriors the lot of them. As for me, I remain privileged to have stumbled across this amazing person, quite capable of playing the piano at the very edge of the event horizon for human capability. Bravissimo Ms. Lisitsa, I salute you!
I have been really fascinated by this piece in the orchestral version. However, this is the best playing of it that I have personally ever seen or listened to. I really like this solo version. Thank-you so much Valentina.
This is a remarkable performance. Liszt, of course, has penned variations on a theme based upon an old and ancient chant - Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) - interpreting the positive and negative judgements of the Lord based on His book. Ms. Lisitsa, through her remarkable pianistic skills, and remarkable interpretation of the music of the composer, has brought forth the positive judgements (with great feeling and understanding) as well as the wrathful judgements, also with great feeling, and with significant power as well. Her body language and facial expression throughout the performance reflects the emotion of the work as it progresses. Never have seen such a sensitive and well-understood performance. Kudos to Ms. Lisitsa, whose skills and sensitivities were up to the task of Totentanz..
Live sehen, unbedingt! Ganz vorne am besten!
This is the best interpretation, from the most talented pianist alive today of my favourite piano piece of all time (I regard it as the most powerful piano work ever composed). Great work Lisitza and Liszt!
This is still for me the best interpretation and performance from Valentina, I keep listening to that one each year, looking at her face mimics on the hard parts, so glad I found this. Thank you Mrs Lisitsa!
amazing! Валентина, спасибо Вам огромное. Любая ваша запись обладает настолько точной энергетикой, что даже в таких мрачных композициях душе радостно за то, что уши слышат.
I can't express how much I love this peace and your performance. The more i listen to it the more i love it, without a doubt the best version ever. Thank you liszt and thank you Valentina for this amazing interpretation ❤️.
That is superhuman playing. Who could imagine a woman, a blond, and with a name like Valentina could play this epic Goethe poem. She has expressed it so superbly, and with so expansive an imagination.
Fred MyOpinion What the fuck is with the "who could imagine a woman blond with name valentina being able to play"? Women go through their periods which is more blood and pain than most men see in their entire life.
I don't know haw is possible to criticize a pianist like Valentina! She's amazing, great interpretation and superb technique. To me, she is one of the greatest pianist nowadays. BRAVISSIMA!
Certainly one of the greatest performances ever of this incredible piece, absolutely the best I have heard, this performance is beyond fantastic. I can only imagine the time and discipline that must have gone into the practicing of this piece and the development of this extremely talented pianist.
I hope that no one will notice this comment of mine... I adore this piece and listen to it all the time, but it never sounds as great as it does when I'm drunk. I'm almost drunk now and I'm truly thoughtfully listening to every note now and religiously watching the miraculous movements of Valentina's fingers. I even managed to finally see the ghostly figure she looks at every few minutes...She briefly glances at him at 1:13, 2:16, 2:51, 10:04
Magnific! I turn Lisitsa on and just listen while I'm working on the computer, but have to keep going back to watch her magnificent playing... I can't get any work done. Bravo!
Je to nádherný zážitek slyšet a vidět tuto skladbu když ji hraje V.Lisitza . Vždy odivuji její techniku ale i to jak tuto skladbu a nejen tuto skutečně prožívá.Není moc takových klavíristek na světě..
flawless technique on the level of michaelangeli and this piece proves liszt was a great forward thinking musician bridging the romantic and 20th century movements like his predecessor beethovan was the missing link between the classical and romantic
Another thought: Valentina and her piano are glued together. I know, to date, of any other artist who is so much in love and connected with his/her craft.
Valentina, you have owned my heart and danced my spirit for the past three years. Thank you for these beautiful gifts, they have truly enriched my life.
Please Valentina, never remove this video from your youtube channel... In fact, do not remove any of your videos. It's a dream to listen to you and watch you play over and over again.
What an amazing talent she is. I can listen to Liszt, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, and Mozart for a 1000 years and never tire of them. Absolutely timeless.
Don't try to undermine the effort of hers by stupid comments please. You aren't born with shit. You put in hard work, dedication - and if you love what you do, you'll strive to get even better. I hate nothing more than "He/She's born with the talent" I heard that off of my playing and I always wondered if people thought there was musical Jesus that came like "Bruh here's some skill for your upcoming life, when you're born you're gonna be awesome" Nope. Some people learn somethings better than others, some might be called that they're born with it. But in the end, all of them must needs to put the time and effort in, in order to exel in their craft. :)
I think one of the reasons a lot of Liszt's music is starting to gain more popularity, is because it is obviously inspiration for some of the most famous articles in pop culture. Try and tell me that some parts of Totentanz DONT sound exactly like the main theme to Pirates of the Caribbean, the 2nd Hungarian rhapsody was used repeatedly by Looney tunes and Disney, and Liebastraum has been used in multiple movies. I hope this continues, people need to rediscover Liszt's music.
In the world there are not many people who can perform these pieces with clarity and naturalness even studying 12-14 hours a day. Valentina you are great
Schmidt Hendrix No.. Liszt had many female piano students. Even had relationships with them too. And when he was around 70-ish years old, a woman requested him to listen to a Chopin piece she played in front of him. It was Chopin's etude op. 10 no. 8. When she played in front of him, he said "Stop" (or "No!" Can't remember which word) in front of many of his students. He didn't say "Stop" because she was a woman.. He said "Stop" because she played it badly. And then he played the etude in front of her and corrected her mistake. There was even a female student whom Liszt gave advice to.. To imagine that she was playing in front of a salon, with people listening to your playing. And even gave her an example on the piano. So nope, he wouldn't wonder at all, really.
Look - Franz Liszt was a showoff. He wrote pieces that only he could play. This was a man who exploded those archaic pianos with wooden frames in the days before cast iron. Valentina's rendition may very well be superior to any performance of the maestro himself. She may be able to challenge the tensile strength of that cast iron. Her technical skills are unsurpassed in this century. I believe she has indeed surpassed the maestro. Listen, learn, understand, believe! . . . This is technical bravado that cannot and never has been surpassed. It is genius, period, full stop, get it? It is true aesthetic perfection!
This is so powerful! As a piece for solo piano it is perhaps a little eccentric and extreme but when performed like this, you can see the vision Liszt had in composing it. It becomes this thing of Herculean majesty. I love the theatricality of your performance, from the grotesque and Gothic to the plaintive and acquiescent. Magnificent.
That has to be one of the greatest, if not the best Steinway Model D I have heard. The sound acoustics of the hall and the piano technician really allowed that piano to sing just right for her. Best interpretation of Totentanz!
Do you get a prickly feeling that thus is a communion with higher power? I first came upon this when I was working with the Minnesota Orchestra several years ago. Nothing on U tube rivals this performance in clarity intensity or bravura. Franz Liszt was channeling something when n he wrote this.
A. L. No Dana means that Liszt had a connection with something supernatural when he was writing this. He was probably just an incredibly gifted person.

She is ALWAYS marvelous. Her memorization and touch are impeccable. I love her.
Ed D: With you all the way. Genius. Period.
I always found it a fated coincidence that her name is Lisitsa and she plays Listzt so phenomenally :D :D
It can't be more perfect. This is the most perfectest thing I've ever heard.
YAY! I FOUND IT AGAIN! AFTER 5 MISERABLE YEARS!!
It kept going up then coming down, didn't it?
Such joy when you find music you can’t remember the name of but you hear almost every day in your head
Live sehen, unbedingt! Ganz vorne am besten!
Valentina is such a great artist... It's amazing! She's a genius.
First time listening this was in 2009. Still to this day i watch this performance once every month or so. Love this so much. Thanks Valentina!
One of the finest performances ever, Lisitsa you are extraordinary
This is the best interpretation, from the most talented pianist alive today of my favourite piano piece of all time (I regard it as the most powerful piano work ever composed). Great work Lisitza and Liszt!
This is still for me the best interpretation and performance from Valentina, I keep listening to that one each year, looking at her face mimics on the hard parts, so glad I found this. Thank you Mrs Lisitsa!
WOW. And she plays this all by memory. Damn.
Seriously!!! That's what i'm sayin! lol
rerenaissance there are so many people who comment on her videos, how could you expect her to remember you?
yes, the great plays all by memory....
Carpel tunnel? lol
Remembering notes is NO difficulty at all (believe me, I can learn the notes (just the notes, NOT to play this piece) in about a week).
I can only imagine the time and discipline that must have gone into the practicing of this piece and the development of this extremely talented pianist.
nice rugs
such a random thing to say
lol i never really saw them
I think the meaning of life is in this video.
How ironic if you pay attention to the name of Liszt's masterpiece which would be translated as "dance of the dead".
:D
inzidenz Lol, you're definitely right, but, even if I knew the meaning of the title, when I posted the comment I didn't thought about the irony...
lol ^^
I think the meaning is to go die because life is hard
Since life is struggle, then YES! it is indeed in it. You know it even though you don't know why.
next level, no words can describe how impressive she is.
I even managed to finally see the ghostly figure she looks at every few minutes...She briefly glances at him at 1:13, 2:16, 2:51, 10:04
drunk crew reporting for duty. 5:01am and I just got home.
So you posted a comment on a video intending it to not be seen?
@@whyit487 Maybe that's because they were drunk...
Presto Drunko
@@whyit487 Glad you can read.
Magnific! I turn Lisitsa on and just listen while I'm working on the computer, but have to keep going back to watch her magnificent playing... I can't get any work done. Bravo!
Just a wonderful musician. Whatever she plays comes to life.
Her technical abilities are out of this world. She's magic.
8 year old comment 😱
@@knurft3 Lol so? The video is 11 years old, why not
Je to nádherný zážitek slyšet a vidět tuto skladbu když ji hraje V.Lisitza .
You just have to liszten to this music!
Floris Vulto I was Haydn in my room and now I am Bach to read your comment.
DeluminatusGM I was liszten to this while chopin some tomatoes for lunch :).
I was Chopin onions to make some guacamole, and I got to Ravel in the taste of the avocado and lime
I'm surprised almost nobody mentions 7:00 although it might be the most epic sequence of the piece
Sounds like pirate theme
Another thought: Valentina and her piano are glued together. I know, to date, of any other artist who is so much in love and connected with his/her craft.
I am replying to myself and adding: yes, I do know. It is Jonathan Antoine, British tenor.
10:55 - 11:21 Reminds the Pirates of the Caribbean, don`t know why :)
Gabriel Gomes Mendes yeah me too
It's basically the same chords, that's why. =)
I wouldn’t doubt Hans Zimmer taking inspiration from this piece of music
Valentina, you have owned my heart and danced my spirit for the past three years. Thank you for these beautiful gifts, they have truly enriched my life.
A quarter of an hour piece by Liszt. Played flawless. She is not human
This is the most majestic thing i've witnessed a person do with with a piano. WOW
omg!!! she is so fast she is nearly sonic omg!!! i really love this video what liszt have done of us it's an amazing piece
Please Valentina, never remove this video from your youtube channel... In fact, do not remove any of your videos. It's a dream to listen to you and watch you play over and over again.
Why would she remove this video, i guess it brings her some money
thanks Valentina Lisitsa!..... Simply THANK YOU!
Whenever my teacher assigns me a new piece, I always come to check how Valentina plays it first!
Mesmerizing! I closed my eyes and could imagine that Liszt was performing. Bravo!👏❤🎹
WOOOOOOOOOW! How many fingers do you have, Valentina?
+Mateus Nascimento That's some Ghost in the Shell superpower, indeed. :-)
+Mateus Nascimento she has 10 killing fingers!
Well... Do you like it?
Ferhat Tongur
I NEVER HATE A WOMAN!
+Maggie Wu Agree Totally Maggie Wu! Valentina La Divina! I think she's the best!
Magnificent performance!
Miss Lisitsa, DIVA!!!
Hello Valentina , Soham here. Wonderful interpretation. All of your performance are my favourites , this one being my favourite.
Lisitsa said “playing the piano is easier than breathing.” This lady is no joke
How does one remembers every single details !!.??..without looking at the script.. i cant even remember what i ate yesterday!! Awesome.
What an amazing talent she is. I can listen to Liszt, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, and Mozart for a 1000 years and never tire of them. Absolutely timeless.
Congratulations on your music knowledge, your energy, and your dexterity !!!
Incredible - food for the soul
Шикарное исполнение; огромное спасибо. Я не слышал чтобы кто-нибудь так играл это произведение соло без оркестра!!! Николай, Vancouver WA

Limitless technique, born to do it easily. Blessed.
Don't try to undermine the effort of hers by stupid comments please. You aren't born with shit. You put in hard work, dedication - and if you love what you do, you'll strive to get even better. I hate nothing more than "He/She's born with the talent" I heard that off of my playing and I always wondered if people thought there was musical Jesus that came like "Bruh here's some skill for your upcoming life, when you're born you're gonna be awesome"
Nope. Some people learn somethings better than others, some might be called that they're born with it. But in the end, all of them must needs to put the time and effort in, in order to exel in their craft. :)
Sure...
I generally dont like fast paced classical pieces much, but I cant stop watching this one. Amazing performance. Thanks for sharing.
I would not be the least surprised that she had been Liszt.
The theme from Totentanz was used in The Shining as well.
In the world there are not many people who can perform these pieces with clarity and naturalness even studying 12-14 hours a day. Valentina you are great
I wonder, if Liszt were alive, what would he tell about her performance?
He would in love with her.
He would wonder why a woman is playing.
So nope, he wouldn't wonder at all, really.
mazeppa1231 It was a joke, you didn't need to write an essay for the social justice of women. Lol!
Schmidt Hendrix Whoops, my bad. :)
Every single artist who performs in public is a show-off - by definition.
Or maybe someone who just wants to make a career out of their passion...? @Jehad Nazzal
Val: "The pianos are afraid of me!"
This kind of puts into perspective the genius of that i am witnessing here and made me appreciate it that much more, beautiful comment.
Thank you, Hassan. She is truly gifted. Valentina makes this extremely difficult piece appear to be a breeze. That is talent, period.
one of the most powerful and beautiful piece of music I've ever heard. She is incredible!
Can somebody pick my jaw up, please.
How the hell do you do those chords so fast
cocaine
She's wearing a mask. It's actually an Asian lady underneath.
@@LAnonHubbard Wtf? 🤣
Practice
This is so powerful! As a piece for solo piano it is perhaps a little eccentric and extreme but when performed like this, you can see the vision Liszt had in composing it. It becomes this thing of Herculean majesty. I love the theatricality of your performance, from the grotesque and Gothic to the plaintive and acquiescent. Magnificent.
This is heavy metal at it's heaviest. Beautiful and terrifying!
3:32-4:00 gets me every time, even if I listen to this absent-mindedly.
Same thing
