The Sid Caesar Imogene Coca Carl Reiner Howard Morris Reunion Special (Apr 4, 1967)

  • For the first time since it originally aired almost 50 years ago, here is the Emmy-winning 1967 TV special that reunited the stars and the writers of "Your Show of Shows" for an hour of absolutely brilliant comedy, start to finish.
    Everyone is in top form from the first sketch, in which we learn that the entire special might never have happened if the cast hadn't all bumped into each while doing their grocery shopping. The show climaxes with a reprise of the famed Gallipacci sketch from "Caesar's Hour", this time with Imogene playing the role originally played by Nanette Fabray.
    The color videotape of this special still exists, but whether we'll ever see it in our lifetimes is doubtful. In the mean time, we're lucky to have this B&W kinescope copy available, which was released on a bargain basement VHS (I cleaned up the audio and video as best I could).
    One of the funniest hours of television I've ever seen. I consider myself very lucky to have a copy (thanks to a What's My Line fan who sent me a very rare copy), and it's a privilege to be able to share it with fellow Sid Caesar fans.

    My undying gratitude to the member of the WML Facebook group for sharing a copy of this extremely rare Sid Caesar special with me. Without the generosity of folks like this, I'd have nothing to post!

    As a kid, I remember watching this with my grandfather. It was a big deal to him to get to see his favorite comedians again. Dad and I went to his house and he had it on. We all loved it!!!

      After 13 years, they had lost nothing as an ensemble. Sid commented that it was just like a long weekend hiatus. ---kjh

    SO glad you have this - especially since my dad Sam Denoff, along with Bill Persky, were both part of the amazing writing team of this special and it won them an Emmy. Would love to talk with you and try to get that 2" color master digitally cleaned up and back on the air. How do I get in touch with you?

    Thanx muchly for sharing this little treasure!
    Don't worry if it's not in color.
    I grew up watching Sid and company on a. Philco black and white tv, and I love the nostalgia trip.
    Thanx muchly for giving us the full show.
    RIP, darling Sid and Imogene, and thanx so very much for the magic, music, and memories.

    All of them lived into their 90's except Howard Morris, who made it to 85. Comedy must indeed be the best medicine.

    I remember watching this. They couldn't call it Your Show of Shows because the title was owned by NBC, and the special was on CBS. It was. however, a faithful re-creation of a Your Show of Shows installment, particularly with the short musical at the end. Everyone wondered if there'd be more of these, but they never did another one.

    In the Married Life sketch, Carl Reiner's wife is played by Maggie Mancuso (Maggie Peterson) who played Charlene Darling on the Andy Griffith Show

    Holy Smokes! That 'Married Life' sketch at 18:28 is "Married with Children 20 years before Al & Peggy Bundy! Imogene even wears Pegs outfit and hair.. and Sid even has Al's one liners! Mind Blown!

      +DarkMsStress Well, it's really a parody of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"-- Elizabeth Taylor's hair, makeup and clothes were deliberately garish in that film.

      True...But watch that bit back to back with a Married with Children clip. Sid even sounds like early Al Bundy... They were way ahead of their time.

    At 36:00 we’re treated to a quick parody of “A Hard Day’s Night”, but good luck Googling any in-depth stories on the writing of one song from a one-off reunion special.
    An opera skit or even the renowned language double talk are among the things least likely to do much for me, but it’s been deeply rewarding to be binging on original sketches and interviews & tributes from back then & all the way up to the modern day.

    I remember seeing this at the time it first aired and my Mom telling me how funny all these people "used to be." I knew Morris from THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW and Imogene from GRINDL and IT'S ABOUT TIME. THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW was my favorite sitcom as a kid but I don't recall recognizing Reiner. And Sid? This was most likely the first time I had ever seen Sid!

    Too bad it's not the color video tape. It's ironic that this upload is a black and white kinescope. It looks like an episode of "Your Show of Shows" from the early 1950s.

      Just a slight correction: This appears to be a black and white copy of a taped show. At this time the networks weren't using the old kinescope process any more/tape had replaced it. If this is a kinescope, that would be weird.

  • @soulierinvestments
    @soulierinvestments 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The recreation of "Gallipacci" is amazing. Inside musical jokes that are humorous and stunning all at once. Did the kinescope of the original survive to the present day?

    • @karenharvey8914
      @karenharvey8914 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's here on TH-cam. It has the most inspired adlib in live television history---check out what Caesar does when the makeup pencil breaks (the origin of what he does in this recreation).

      I haven't posted the original "Gallipacci" sketch myself yet, but it's been on TH-cam for a long time:

      I found the original. The original is pretty amazing in its musical inside jokes as well. One of the best uses of "One of those things" and "Yellow Rose of Texas" I have encountered.

    • @RSEFX

      This isn't a kinescope. By this time tape had long ago replaced that more primitive process.

    I saw this program the night it aired and recorded the audio on reel-to-reel tape from WTOP-TV in Washington, D. C. When I get a chance, I'll check to see if it is still playable and whether it's any better than the audio on the VHS issue, which sounds a little thin. Synching it with the video would be a challenge; but, I've done it before. See this Nichols & May routine: th-cam.com/video/SfLaY-R9kaU/w-d-xo.html
