MRE Beef Taco Menu #6 ~2014~

- This review is a of a US. Meal, Ready-to-Eat 2014 Menu #6 Beef Taco that was packaged by Ameriqual. Turns out the Beef in the "Beef Taco" isn't Beef! It's Textured Vegetable Protein or TVP which actually makes this a vegetarian ration and I'm pretty confident the cheese is just as artificial as the ahem "beef" so this menu might even work if you are a Vegan. Outside of that it wasn't a bad ration especially when doctored up with the field kitchen love of mixing stuff together and adding hot sauce! Thanks Drill Sergeant D for sending this in for a review!! If you want to see more Subscribe. Cheers!

Anyone growing up in Texas can tell you PB&J on a tortilla is a thing. Also hot dogs wrapped in a tortilla is a childhood staple.
But refried beans would have been a nice addition to the taco.
I prefer pb&j on a tortilla and I be from Florida
I just ate the 2018 Sopakco Menu 6 Beef Taco, and it was beef with TVP as filler. It tasted almost just like Taco Bell meat. It came with two mains, the beef and a rice mix. Somehow I got it all in the FRH and everything warmed well, including the tortillas and a jalapeno cheese spread that I saved from a prior ration. It was actually a very tasty after midnight meal. There was no fruit, but had nut/raisin mix instead.
Calling TVP beef should be illegal...
Guziec what's that
+Jeff If you haven't figured it out already, TVP is Textured Vegetable Protein. In other words, the "Beef" in the "Beef Taco"... isn't beef at all. Or not 100% beef, anyway.
Creamer: milk, but not really
Beef tacos: beef, but not really
The next day they will give you an M4 but it's actually a sling
Great stuff as usual gundog! I have to say that Beef Taco certainly SOUNDS like a great menu choice. I also appreciate all the work and research they've put in over the years in improving MREs (they're light years better today than back in the days when we were serving, no doubt). There's a LOT of good components these days. But...all that being said, they make some STRANGE choices as far as what they pick for individual meals. This is one of the worst offenders of that!
Fortunately this menu now has cheese instead
Nice call with the combos in the taco. I swear they used to give out hot sauce a lot more often in American MRE's.
They did. Just guessing here but they probably found out that the high speed soldiers took their own bottles of hot sauce with them.
I ended up over here from Steve's channel... just subbed.... nice! ;)
It does contain TVP, but it also definitely contains beef, more beef than TVP. Not vegetarian. I'd agree that jalapeno cheese would be a more sensible inclusion than PB&J, but I bet the tacos would still be fine if you added PB or J to them. The jelly might add some tartness, which would never be bad. Peanut butter is an excellent addition to lots of Asian dishes, and might help everything bond together and be less messy. Great review as always.
......add jelly and peanut butter to a taco.......millions of North, Central & South Americans are spinning in their graves LOL! Yeah peanut sauce is a personal favorite with a nice spicy phad thai. Cheers
Ah a new video...perfect break away from studying for the boards. Thanks Gundog!
Welcome Mollie!
The Boards? Are you going into medical?
I like seeing 2 videos in 2 days... keep up the awesome vids
PB and j on tortillas is good for breakfast out in the field right after you wake up
Great TH-cam channel love all these vids
That beef reminds me of the Beef Taco kids Lunchables that used to be made here in the US! I miss those :/
Damn, would have to do some serious trading with other guys in your unit to make that a complete meal. Not sure what they were thinking adding PB&j with a "taco" meal.
I've heard of good combos/ good ideas with mixing this and that to improve an mre. But who in their right mind would even think of putting jelly in taco ?
Why is the pouring and stirring so satisfying? Is it just me?
Well gundog you aren't wrong calling them carbohydrate electric drinks lol the colors are more electric than a highlighter sometimes especially the lemon lime. Stuff looks radioactive. Keep up the great work as always dude! 🍻
Pretty cool, great lunch time video. Been wanting to try that one myself. If your looking for other 2014 stuff try well that's easy.
Excellent review!
I have a fairly large stock pile of MRE Beef Taco Filling pouches and a case of Yoders Canned Beef Taco Filling as we can do taste tests while hunkered down after a SHTF event. No need being bored while being unable to get out. . Oh, and I have a Tamale Press, Masa and a few bags of shredded freeze dried cheddar cheese as well. Cheers!
Just watched this video Gdog got a case of 2016 MRE'S nice that they put cheese spread in them. Wish they had the seasoned black beans and jalapeno cheese spread would make a great burrito.
Loved this review. Everything looks good. Showing my age too and love the way you joke around and have a good time:)
Thanks for the review, yeah I loved the young girl doing the review and waiting to see if she does another one.
In great form today gundog. I had to smile you trying to make sense of them putting peanut butter and jelly in there. I remember your vegetarian one that was almost 90% chocolate items. I mean it is the government in a manner of speaking😉😊👍
In the Corps we would take those carbo/electrolyte mixes and put them in one liter canteens to dilute them. They were/are way more electrolytes than you need in one go as a general rule.
We never did that, those stupid drinks had a way of staining the insides of the canteens and would fail you in a full "junk on the bunk" in a hot second. But then again, quite a few of us had a whole second set of gear exclusively used for the field so we never had to clean the crap for inspections!
I always heard that is the exact reason why the PB&J , as well as the Cheese Spread were regular additions to most military rations. Sources of protein in case you weren't feeling the entrees
whats the difference between type1-3 coffee Gundog? just wondering..cheers and have a great day sir
Steve probably would be the one to know but I'd guess fortified additions such as minerals or vitamins
He does love his coffee instant type 1.
gundog4314 thanks for the tip..cheers
Stephen McTowelie bring back type 1 and I hate type 3
gundog4314 Funny thing is, I watched one of Steve's very early videos and he declined to drink the coffee. He said he didn't much care for coffee. .. Just look at him now. :-)
I was just waiting for that one bean to fall off the spoon
It's like magic right?! Cheers!
Always a classic. Great review.
Another reason they don't do all spicy iirc is to give you a way to cool down the mouth after something spicy. So the pb&j may have been meant to do that. Kinda how some restaurants offer sides with spicy food to help (local hot wing spot has soft cool ranch breadsticks with the orders)
Great review sir I enjoyed that I'm doing the same pack next week but mine is the 2015 pack it will be great to compare the two meals by 1 year and I will give you a mention as you gave me a idea I'm abit Disappointed that there's no mre cracker or snack bread for the pbnj with these meals
The peanut butter and grape jelly would go good with the combos.
Awesome review mate. I have gotta hear that first fight over a PB&J story some time. LOL
It's their story and best when they tell it. All I can say is I nearly peed my pants laughing the first time I heard it.
LOL probably one of those "wish I was there" moments?
Enjoy your videos very much,as they are quite informative! Can you please answer this for me? Why do U.S mre's lack pepper packs? The mre's that I have tried in Europe all have salt and Pepper but I have not found any in the U.S ones.
I don't have a clue. Has to do with some military requirement or oversight during the contracting phase and no one ever corrected it. Typical government to me. Cheers!
Great work once again Gundog! Had this menu for dinner yesterday, same year of production, but it was Wornick instead of Ameriqual. Every ration so far in the case has had Tropical or Fruit Punch as the beverage base powder and I'm not a fan of either of them. Hahaha
I didn't think to look at the taco filling ingredients... I did think the chunks of "beef" looked a little different compared to other ground beef entrees, this confirms my suspicion.
You don't have to put the tortilla in the sleeve, you can just leave ON the sleeve for maybe 30 sec each side and your done.
Was my favorite one. Didn't even mind it cold.
I've taken a chance on this the last 2 or 3 field exercises we've done and some jalapeño cheese would really make it so much better. But hey there's combos, so it's got that going for it I guess.
I really liked the "meat" in the beef taco meal. I totally agree that it should have come with spicy cheese. Heck if they wanted they could put the spicy cheese in with the peanut butter and jelly I doubt it would weight the pack down too much more. I liked it so much that I bought a crap ton of it from Emergency Essentials and a whole bunch of jalapeno cheese. I like to put the beef taco over tortilla chips and the cheese on top stick it in the microwave for 1 and a half to 2 minutes. Its great. In fact I'm craving it after watching this so I think I'll go make some up.
I wonder who is in charge of deciding what items go into U.S. MRE's? There doesn't seem to be any logic into what items go in them, and compared to some other nations (France comes to mind) the quality of the food seems lackluster.
I've eaten several of those, but mine were from the other suppliers and the taco filling was real beef, much finer in texture. Odd that Ameriqual's is so different.
I love the Australian cr1m
According to the ingredients I could find for the taco meat ration beef is the second ingredient and textured vegetable protein is the fourth, so it wouldn't be vegetarian. Cause I'd be pissed about that if I was expecting beef.
Interesting review -makes you reading the ingredient list every time ! :) But if it tasted good - it is OK
just tried one myself there good got me hooked
do mre's ever have jerky in them? also where do you buy these from like online? good video btw
They do, in fact every First Strike Ration has two of them and every few years they come back in regular MREs. I used to bring my own out in the sticks
Nice review Gundog!
Hmmm. Who in the DOD comes up with the menus on these MRE's? Really surprised they didn't add mayonnaise packets to that one... I would add hot sauce (although most of us carried it);) Add cheese spread; bacon cheese, ( because everybody knows bacon goes great with everything) jalapeño cheese, or the plain cheese. The combos are a good idea. The refried beans would be a good idea!
Funny you mentioned the fist fight over PBJ. I witnessed and broke up a few over stolen MRE parts, or pogey bait that got misplaced. Gotta be,a combat arms thing!!
And yeah, that was during the Gulf War.;)
LOL! Worst fight I ever saw was these two guys really didn't like each other to start with, when one poured a canteen cup full of water in the other guy's jump boots as a prank...pretty funny indeed. The payback was later that week in the field when the prankster walked out in the woodline to go #2. He was followed by the pranked who causally took the guys web gear, rifle, shovel and toilet paper while the prankster was in mid squat. He then walked off hiding things along the way sans toilet paper which he kept. They prankster had to use his t-shirt to um...clean himself, then conduct a scavenger hunt through the woods looking for all his kit. That fight was legendary!
LMAO!! That's ultimate payback!
Nice!
I ate this ration while watching this review lol I actually mixed the jelly and peanut butter with the taco filling on the tortilla and it was pretty good gundogging it up I guess haha
it would made more sense if the side was something like rice or mash potatoes, a second filling for the tacos and then have a smaller pack of freeze dried fruit.
Lol I was just watching the chicken chunks review then I ordered this one on amazon not knowing that it was going to be the next video
cool review
What a coincidence. I ate one of those last week.
When you look at some of the astonishing food in a lot of continental MRE's, the American ones seem to be a bit lacking. Offered some of these, or an Australian CR1M, it'd be the Australian one every time.
Great review as always. Had my first experience of a US mre today (a 2016 menu 20 hashbrowns and bacon). Man I had no idea how acrid the frh is. Luckily I was outside but still got a good nose full at the start. The meal itself was good though. Not sure on that easy cheese though lol. Hope to get hold of a menu 8 and 17 sometime soon though. Expensive and can be hard to find here in the UK.
Yeah those heaters are in fact some smelly things indeed
Menu #6 Date: 7325
Plain cheese, no jelly or PB. Sante Fe Rice and Beans, no fruit. Nut raisin mix, no combos. Plain orange beverage type III.
Beef taco filling: Water, seasoned cooked beef crumbles, taco seasoning, TVP...
ORANGE TURBO-POWER ELECTROLYSIS DRINK BEVERAGE!
LOL!
I'm more of a pretzel combo guy myself, I dunno..
I would have liked this taco, They didnt have that when I retired 7 years ago
gundog whats the difference in the coffee from type 1 to type 3
wgat years did you serve gundog
Your awesome name just got you a sub!! And good content 😌
heat them a bit and fold 90 degrees to the fold
It looks better than most mre's.
Great review!! Sorry about the TVP. All items did look tasty however. Peace, John, Magnum.
When does the tortilla split apart like you said it would do?
i suppose it makes more sense to have the tortillas pre folded so its already in a taco form
hey gundog4314 how are ya? what year and where were you stationed in germany?
Honestly I never used the sleeve, pr boxes when they had those. Just set it on a rock or sonething lol

i wish every mre has a tabasco pack
we're back in the ghetto, of the u.s of a
Just saw answer on other vid thanks
had a demon experience with that menu never again.
How backed up are you on reviews?
I'm not really backed up but I have tons of stuff sitting here to be reviewed.
I always carried hot sauce packets in the field
👍👍
Where do I get that tray? It looks lightweight like it would be good for camping
I got it on ebay, just look for sectioned tray and they should pop up.
gundog4314 Thanks!!
little question. if i live in Italy, how can i get a case of 12 MREs without having to spend a heckload of money? I tried getting XMREs, but 480€ are way too much.
You can get them over there perhaps try surplus outdoors in the UK and see how much they have in stock. They'd probably get you a decent deal for buying a whole case. www.surplusandoutdoors.com/shop/search
gundog4314 thanks a lot, man!
Yeah pretty lame they omitted the cheese packet. I suppose you could extract the cheese out of your combos.
I would be mad if they gave me a beefless beef taco ration!!!
Where can I get meal cold weather 24 hour
Taco LeBoeuf?
some mre cheese would have been nice
I wish they'd bring back buffalo chicken
Me too but with some substantial chunks of chicken instead of that shreaded junk. Cheers Helen!
Im early for a great video
You should get hold of astronauts food.
where do you get the trays like the ones in your video?
I got them off ebay or amazon just type in sectioned trays and a bunch should pop up
gundog4314 okay, thanks
Where do you get these from?
From great viewers!
Peanut butter tacos.....mmmmm...yummy...?
I thought cheese came with that not the PBand J
I probably is supposed to, but in reality whatever the contractor grabs or doesn't grab is what goes in the bag.
Also rip kate
Still not convinced mres are better than Vietnam era rations except for the horrid lima beans
I said it before but most you guys do the heater wrong. Doing it that way you only get I quick heat no way to do your coffee after.
If you do it that way put everything and hot water bag in outer bag add pack salt and extra water get everything hot at once.
I suppose, but when I was in the Army I only knew one person that ever routinely used the FRH at all. Most of us didn't want to wait to 10 minutes for a half assed heated main or lukewarm drink. Best way for coffee was canteen cup Plexiglas cover, sit in sun. Hot meal, tape to 5 ton muffler while moving to next position, scalding hot when you get there.
Trade someone the fruit for some cheese
It does happen. You can always find someone who will have something you want that they don't. There's quite a few folks in the service that don't drink coffee(heresy, ain't it?) no matter what. I'd trade a pack of caramels and get four to five packs of coffee in return. That made my mornings a lot more bearable.
You are with a group of at least 4 or more people and every time we have sat around you traded some of your stuff for some thing you liked better I had one guy I used to trade drinks Id give him the fruit drink and Id get his coffee . We always had one hot meal a day any way so even if you did not like what was there you would not stave ha ha .
That is field survival 101 that's how I really got into yellow curry, Jardine used to carry it and mix it in whenever he got a "stew" ration. I learned a lot during that first tour to be a competent field chef HAHA!
do soldiers carry a tray in their packs?
I never carried a mess kit except at basic training so you'd be hard pressed to find a tray in somebodies ruck. Cheers
Ooohhhhh
Lol beef taco my ass
No cheese
You DONT have to put salt in an frh?!?!? Watch steve1989 he will show you how to eat an mre.
That's funny, I spent 5 years in the Army. I'm pretty sure I know how to eat a MRE. Thanks for the laugh Cheers
@@gundog4314 didn't spend enough time haha
Lmao this guy just said that beef might be the same thing that is used in chili...😏 Really? You don't say? Surprise beef is also what hamburgers are made of dude.
Well, it's MRE stuff which usually means TVP or fake a$$ beef....as in this case. Cheers Cool Devil
Censored the a** part
Had a profile pic that says it...
That's the TH-cam algorithm for you. For some reason my vids are associated with TH-cam Kids and you can't have cuss words on a thumbnail yet I can as my channel avatar. Go figure eh?
