- Making a garden / compost trommel from old bike wheels and wire mesh. I will be using this for the removal of rocks and other debris from my garden as the main use. Then after that it will be used as a compost sifter.

What's the length of 1 rim to the next closest rim. Because I was just curious of what if I only used 2 rims for the while thing
You can also use pop rivets with fender washers to hold the screen on.
I was wondering exactly that!
I have never seen a fender washer with a small enough center hole for a pop rivet.

What size wheels did you use that you had to patch the screen?
The wheel sizes are 23 or 24 inches. Standard 10 speed bike wheel. Also, me having to use that patch panel was only due to my budget restrictions. It was cheaper for me to purchase 2 shorter rolls of wire mesh than it was for 1 longer roll. If you get the long roll of mesh the patch isn't needed. I'm pulling your leg, man. Your video was, well done and, though I know bicycle wheels well, there are others who do not so your patience in showing how to remove the spokes was excellent. (I did, however, fast-forward through the 2nd rim. ;-) )

Pop rivets and washers?
Instead of the "zip ties" , you might find that short self tapping screws (the ones with the washer built into the head) would work better and last longer.
That's a great idea! The only thing I would have concerns about would be finding a screw short enough that the tip would remain lower than the edge of the rim so they wouldn't interfere with the wheels that the cage rides on.
Unless the zip ties are UV coated they only last a while in the sun. At least, thats what happens here in Australia.
For those that like to "Recycle" things to make the world a better place, then re-using those old bicycle wheels could be classified as "Recycling" materials for a better purpose, and they don't have to be thrown into the Land fill.
So where is part 2? Did you use a dryer belt or the bike chain and gears to turn the tumbler?

as a minimalist im thinking 2 rims with a cross of spokes left on, atatch pedal to 1 wheel axel somehow, sit device on 2 upside down bikes and just turn it manually oh and the screen ofcourse
A little more difficult to move around if needed, but yeah I could see something like that working.
@@ScanMan79 yea true, im not really capable of much further than that lol i have an old manual workout bike i wonder if i could just pull 1 fork of the side of the wheel and just atach some mesh and anothe spare rim to the other side of it
Manual would prevent continuous feeding and a LOT of wasted time.
Leave the tires on. It'll run quieter.
+Alex Tworkowski That would be a great idea if I could get a caster this an inverted "V" so the tire could ride in it. The cage is guided by the casters it's riding on. A little bit free floating if you will.
ScanMan79 I hear ya. Good point. Love the thing. Always wanted to sift my composted grass clippings and had the idea of one about the aspect of a ferris wheel w/ wooden sides and a door to shovel in the compost. This is so much better. I threw out a perfectly good stepper motor from a treadmill the wifey was moaning about. Should have kept it and the controls. In the next life, i guess. Thanks for the response. Excellent video.

What about steel pop rivets instead of zip ties?
The mesh is too large for that. You would need a large washer with a very small center hold.

Not sure your location, but for me I checked local bike shops, scrap yards and started asking around to find mine.

Froman Abe Hello, personally I just asked around for anyone that had any old bicycles that they didn't care about laying around. If you have any bike repair shops near you you might be able to ask them if they'd have anything you could have or keep an eye out for you. ScanMan79... Thinking about the name... were you in the transport industry, per chance?? Scan being short for Scania... Man... well, truck and bus brand out of Germany, and both had equipment in Australia at that time...
Hey Jacare, No, I wasn't in the transport industry. The name came from my attempt to combine a few on my interest. Storm chasing (radar scanning), I'm also a HAM radio operator so I did a lot of radio frequency scanning as well as owning a photography business (now closed) (photo scanning) at the time I made up the screen name. It's been several years ago now, but you are the first to ever ask about it. :)

Rims needed a good wire brush polishing
MrJesseh24 would make it look nicer but beyond that no real improvement in functionality. They immediately get dirty anyway.
