  • In this video I review the Eastonmade 22-28 log splitter equipped with box wedge and attached conveyor. I then split a tote full of wood and time how long it takes.

    I know this year I have slowed down my cutting, I am pushing 72 soon. Fighting two bad shoulder, doing rehabilitation for them. It hell to get old. Very nice splitter you got now. Fast also

      Thanks Larry. I'll be 75 in January and I'm convinced this splitter will keep me productive for several years. It's a large investment for a small operation, but resale is high and a person could recoup most of the initial expense if they needed to sell. In the meantime its really paying for itself.

    Fascinating machine. I’m just a private wood burner with acreage. Been cutting, bucking and splitting for 50 years now. This is the best innovation I’ve ever seen. Just too much machine for private use.

    Great job with the video Dick. Its good to see you are enjoying the splitter and increasing productivity as well. I know our 12-22 has made a big difference for us making bundle wood.
    I know they are expensive , but you definitely get what you pay for and then some. As I get older, I am always looking for ways to make my life easier and this splitter helps out immensely. It makes firewood fun again. Hope you and yours had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Stay safe

    Great video. The Eastonmade is quite the splitter. I noticed in the end you moved your tote with 3 pt. hitch. First time I’ve seen anyone do that in all the firewood videos I’ve watched. Great video. Dave D. from Southern Maine.

      Hi Dick, I know where you grew up very well. Spent many nights camping at High Point and love that entire area. I don’t know if you have been back but it’s still very beautiful.
      We are about 30 miles due south in western Morris County. Almost straight down south on RT 206. Still somewhat rural but closer to employment and shopping. The minimum lot size in our town is 3 acres with some smaller and many over 5 acres. So, it’s not too crowded.
      People see where you grew up and where we live, and can’t believe it’s NJ. But it is. An hour to skiing, New York City, or the Shore. It’s a great place to live but glad we bought into the Real Estate market 35+ years ago. It’s ridiculous now.

    Does Eastonmade have a grizzly bar setup for the end of the conveyor? Glad you too can enjoy a box wedge machine! I think it’s the best kept secret in the wood splitting industry, hands down a box wedge is the way to go, especially the pull back arm. Any way to limit touches is going to speed up production. Take care Dick, hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

    When you make your next video about the pizza wedge, can you go over the details again about the splitter? Specifically, the axle of the splitter isn't located where I normally see them. I'm not sure if that axle is for the splitter of the elevator. Either way, it's location frees up a lot of room for the operator and I think that is an under estimated quality when operating the splitter. There a particular brand I'm interested in and because the axle is in the way you have to work over the tire and I don't think I could stand it.

    Dick what you didn’t discuss is the volume of wood you would have to produce in your area to pay for this splitter in a year. I know it sells for different prices in different areas however you should give a reasonable amount of wood you would have to process in a year. Is it 100 full cords or 1000. That number would give someone an idea of what there getting into. If you harvest your own logs that’s more time in the woods if you buy logs to up your production you have those costs and profit is less but production goes up because your processing not gathering. Hopefully you can give us an approximate cords to pay this off in a year in your area. Peace

    • @oldguyfirewood
      @oldguyfirewood  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a very good question William. It also depends on what you are selling, ie. bundles, cords, small fractions of cords, etc. In my area, selling bulk wood, I could pay it off in 2 years if I was doing around 60 cords a year bulk wood and in 1 year if I was selling all bundles. That's assuming you're getting free wood, and you're not paying yourself anything during that period. Everyone's situation will be different based on their market, etc. and everyone would have to run their own numbers to see what the break even point would be. I would never have even considered it before, but with the increase in production I've seen it is a no brainer. YMMV...

    • @oldguyfirewood
      @oldguyfirewood  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Paul, thanks for watching. This process results in loose stacked wood in the tote, and it eliminates the touches you have if you stack it by hand in the tote. I also think the wood will dry faster loose in the tote vs. stacked. If I'm bundling the wood it doesn't matter how much is in the tote. If I'm selling bulk I will have to determine what fraction of a cord is in a loose thrown tote, and then load the appropriate number of totes to equal a face cord, full cord, etc.

      It depends on how much you can sell your wood for, if your get free logs, etc. In my area I could pay for it in one year selling 100 cords.

      Ha Ha Tim! Since it's not so physically exhausting any more I'll probably spend more time splitting!

      Slick rig for sure Dick from what I understand you get a lot less trash with strait grain rounds . The rounds with knots tend to produce a lot of scrap but either way it sure makes life a lot easier using that .

      @@AllenFamilyFirewood your absolutely correct Phil. The box wedge will create a lot of scrap with twisted or knotty wood.
