  • ‪@casey‬ and ‪@vanneistat‬ might be family, but you wouldn't necessarily know it from watching their videos. Jack sat down with both brothers, and we picked out some of the ways in which their artistic approaches are similar and different.

I’m always shook every time I hear Casey says he only edits chronologically, that’s wild.

Jack. Hands down you Sir are one of the best YT interviewers. You have the ability to pull out that "thing" that makes me watch a specific creator and highlight it in your interview that just seems like you are just catching up with a friend that you haven't seen or spoke to in a while. I so look forward to these and all of your videos. Thank you.

So cool to see both interviews side by side.
As much as there are differences between them - there are real similarities too.
Casey doesn't keep a schedule and thrives on moment to moment - in order to keep him interested, but free from distraction. Van goes the other way with detail oriented focus, but to achieve the same result. Both play to their individual characteristics but in order to get to the same state of constant flow. Van needs structure and planning to achieve that, and Casey needs constant stimulus to get him there - but that 'flow state' seems to be the same for them both.
I think there's a great lesson in that - and why it's so important not to try and copycat other people's methods. By all means try stuff out to see what works for you - but if your goal is "if I do it like them, I'll get it right too" then you're missing the biggest lesson of all - to trust your instincts and figure out how YOU need to achieve that flow.

60-70% shooting to usable footage efficiency is incredible. At this point, even 25% feels like a miracle! Something to aspire to.
Great to see the juxtaposition of Casey and Van's crafts.
You are a brilliant interviewer, Jack!

60%-70% made me think, I should think before pressing that record button.

This was fantastic. At the end I was thinking...crap...it's over! I wish the video was longer. Well done. I find both filmmakers incredibly inspiring and I think the lesson here is to be yourself.

I loved the fact that techical questions were asked of them that I've never heard them answer before. I'm guess you had enough material to make this video even longer.

I absolutely love this re-tooling of those two interviews into this back-n-forth. I def was feeling those threads back and forth when watching the full interviews, but that thread was super thin and almost transparent. A smidge unconscious. This brings it home. Clean & clear. Love it. Been gearing up to re-use some of my old interviews recently. Some are strictly re-edits to tighten up old stuff, and some are literally going back to the raw footage to mine something completely different out of them. Fun challenges.

Casey is the Intuitive , Visionary type. Big Picture. "Forest", rather than "Trees". Focused & enjoying the results/outcome the most. (probably INTJ)
Van is the Sensory guy. Detail oriented. "Trees", rather than "Forest". He can enjoy the process, the "Flow" state. (likely ISTP)
Notice Van reads books, works with analog tools. Casey doesn't seem to read books & is more comfortable with tech/electronics. Also Casey has literally taken a fire ax to a digital camera, I doubt that Van would. (he would take it apart, certainly, but only to improve/customize/modify it.)
For the very best results, you really need both types on any team, or the Very Rare person who can embody both aspects.

@@tamsonw I LIKE that. (Robert Hughes mentioned that concept.) I really admire both of these guys, but for very different reasons. Notice that Casey is an expert at delegation. In fact, at 7:06 in this video he admits that without employees, his workspace is a mess. Van is just the opposite. Anyone who has viewed his workshop sees how meticulously organized he is, all by himself. In fact, he often cites his inability to delegate ANY tasks to his own satisfaction. Big Picture vs Hands On. If Casey were Jobs, Van would be Wozniak.

This was a great episode, two different perspectives when making videos. I love when Casey said he doesn't care about the audience, just loves making videos. I felt that, make what you like.

I love the way you are breaking down principles, and doing these interviews... do you know the book Tools of Titans from Tim Ferriss? I like this, where you are interviewing all these people understanding more and more about their process and craft... I mean, this is great, Jack! Keep going!

would be interesting if you interviewed Dean Neistat. he has his own TH-cam channel as well. years ago one of his vlogs came across my recommended but yeah it would be interesting to understand why he didn’t want to take the same path as his brothers.

Casey says Van is more talented than him. Technically, that may be true.
However, Casey has a level of charisma Van will never achieve. That's why Casey will always be more popular. He's just so lovable.
