In other words, don't do it just to do it.
This still holds true today. Frustrates me to no end when I am watching a great travel blog and then they announce 'I am now going to show you some drone footage' and then there's 5-8 minutes of drone footage with some mid music played over the top. That footage would've been best used as b-roll while they were talking about the landscape, or to establish where they were before showing the 'boots on ground' footage.
3 years after the release of this video, I'd like to say I'm overwelmed by your skill, talent and hardwork that made you so successful.. It seems impossible to be successful like you.
But when you said 'You have to find your own thing..' That's what I needed to hear. I hope we all find our own stlyes that make each of us shine the best we can.

Honestly as a screenwriter it's fascinating seeing Casey apply all these filmmaking/writing techniques & theories (particularly the three act structure) to a new platform and type of filmmaking. It's really what sets Casey's vlogs apart.

some people are missing the point he made about drone and time lapse shots. He's not saying they are bad. He's saying to use them only in certain transitional spots. Other than that, it's fodder no one cares about.
Transitional or to add context. Not just because you have a drone so you're going to shoot 15 minutes of off-topic drone footage that adds nothing to the video.
Only just now realizing that act three had three acts in it and it was a necessary resolution to the two acts that came before it. So blown away by your talent sometimes.

WAIT!!!! "no one gives a shit about your stupid timelapse.." !!!! Those shots are probably my favorite parts of the vlog because first they are eyepleasing, second you do a great job editing them (like one of your videos at the airport you did some crazy shit) third you sync them up witht the music.
Yep, I love timelapses also, and especially Casey's. I dont even thing you can go wrong with any timelapses.
His point was that timelapses, like drone shots, are nothing on their own, but if they have a purpose within the narrative then they work great.

What makes a vlog great is that all this technicality is invisible to the person who is watching
He didn't even go into real descriptive stuff about what he really does. The amount of camera setups and the time to edit just makes me sick thinking about it.
true, like the first shot where he enters his hotel room, where did he keep the camera? does he always have a big tripod stand with him, if i did that i would look stupid xD but i will still do it haha
He has a sense of story telling... Most times when I vlog, I don't take the time to get out my uber, tell him to wait, set up the camera on a tri pod, re enter the uber, film myself coming out, take the camera, re shoot myself coming out, just this is 5mn...
And I would feel akward talking to a camera in a car with a driver, all these things.
But Casey is numb to that, the story telling comes first

I used to vlog from 2007-2009(sadly rarely because of video editor crashing and small cam memory..)...But i quit because my family was watching and telling me to stop...brother was laughing at me. I quit...now i'm 26 and i regret, because i really enjoyed it.
It's not to late to start again :)
You can still VLOG at the age of 26. Go for it, don't let anyone stop you from what you enjoy. The second you do this you will start doing this with more and more in your life. To hell with the haters/doubters. Do what you want!

This is brilliant Casey. One of the greatest things I remember when editing, and I learnt this from another tuber, is that “just cause you filmed it, doesn’t mean you have to use it.” It’s helped me a lot to be okay with cutting things out. I’m the only one who knows it’s been filmed. Ha!

Just started watching my very first Casey video. To absorb my thinking to what Casey speaking of vlogging that can work for me. This was done insanely well with the technicality and spontaneity.

I have no ambition or expectation to VLOG, but I still found this video really interesting. It helps with all creative outlets to hear how other creators do what they do. Hey Casey, loved the simplicity in your 3 act scene blueprint. It's really funny how giving structure to a simple and obvious method is so puzzling to most. I also enjoy the cleverly placed mirrors, videos screens, open bladed knives and other "stuff" is in the shot.
Ok here's the thing... I have just discovered you a few weeks ago while doing some research on starting my own vlog that takes me and my wife into retirement. As a 50+ year old agency video producer who go stuck in the edit suites producing 30 second retail television spots (Car Commercials) the world of production past me by. I am having to play catch up on everything I forgot from my early days of story telling. In this 14 min video who have reminded me how to tell a compelling story. I can't thank you enough.

Definitely with you on that. next week we'll have a different outlook once that humidity creeps in. Summer has it's place and it is almost that time : 3 months of consistant heat and either no rain or freak storms. We've had a tepid spring and very comfortable the way it should be......The heat and still air make it uncomfortable and can make us miserable and hot boiled. When it reaches 90 I guarantee most (including Casey ) will be seeking cool air conditioning.
