I miss hearing Casey talk about the process of his film making and what inspires him. This was a fantastic interview that captured his creative side so well.
Casey’s commitment to the pursuit of interestingness is by far the best education I received as an aspired video creator. Him being so down to earth is what I appreciate the most when I listen to his story. Great to see him back in NYC.
I ran into Casey in NYC. He was extremely nice. After meeting him, I was inspired to start my own TH-cam channel which now has thousands of subscribers. Thanks for the creative inspiration Casey.
me too! He is so humble and it made me realize how as a successful person, you can still be nice and respect others. I also asked him to capture this moment as it meant a lot to me, and he was really chill about it. To this day, I look at the photo at inspire myself to create.
I’ve watched all of the Rich/Casey convos. Something about this one helped me more. Maybe because I’m exactly like him in the way that I have to work alone and my environment matters so much. It was motivating to hear him talk about “I just need my computer and my camera, and I’ll sit there and edit it alone, and I’ll hit upload, then I’ll close my laptop and go for a run, and maybe I’ll look at the numbers later or tomorrow, and I don’t need praise for my work or validation.” Good reminders. Thank you both.
Convo at around 18:00 reminds me of my employer, a "3PL" - third party logistics provider - that gives customers the freedom to focus on CORE COMPETENCY - the things they do best. Our customer at my location outsources multiple services, from cleaning to security to logistics, because they trust us to do what we do well... so they can devote energy and resources to their products. Tremendous amount of trust extended to us... and we all thrive through robust and honest communication.
I can't say how much both of you have inspired me to be a better version of myself in this crazy world. It is great to see both of you on this podcase. Keep up the good work.
Funny how those who’ve visited the peak of a mountain (both proverbial or real) always reflect on the importance of patience - amazing conversation. Worth a rewatch!
I’ve been watching Casey’s interviews over the past week so it feels very serendipitous that this one dropped now. I was so excited to see it was with Rich, I’m not sure why but Casey has done a lot of interviews with people that are really not great interviewers I’m really happy to have seen this one where thoughtful questions were asked of a person who has a lot of thoughtful answers to give 🙏🏼
I absolutely love Casey. His love for creativity and the art of being genuine. These 2 things are the reason people are so glued to his content. Nothing to do with quality or story arch’s. Being a creative and genuine person is the rare feat that these people like Casey and Joe Rogan have in common and no one ever talks about it.
Great podcast! To sum up it’s the line between not shitting on people and have something to talk without having the World up in your face. The ability to blend in with everyone at the end of the day. Thank you again guys for the video.
I think this entire podcast encapsulates everything Casey had worked hard for and the way he explains his process just brings everything together and is just so inspiring to listen to. Fantastic job Rich.
Listening to Casey on podcasts is like when you get to see the teachers/ mentors you held on high regard from up close, as humen you travel together on the same road.
The only thing better than watching a video from one of my favorite people on TH-cam is watching a video from two of my favorite people on TH-cam! Thank you for this. As an aspiring creator this gave me the food for thought I needed.
Casey is so smart about not releasing the movie on TH-cam to create distance from his TH-cam Chanel. I think if he released it on TH-cam it would overtake his identity on yt.
This was such a great conversation! Really opened my mind to different perspectives and approaches to creativity as a whole in this new age!! thanks for this! ❤🙏
These two - Rich and Casey, both self made, imperfect icons, role models and mentors who for me, keep things grounded in todays hypermedia 🙏 thankful for this chat
Just got the end of the 'Creator Economy' section, and Casey speaks so much sense. I'm thoroughly bored of titles like "This is why you need this..." or "Your Videos Will Get More Views By Doing this...". And there's channels dedicated to maximising this kind of work. It feels like where currently stuck at looking at metrics instead of making sure we're making something good. The actual advice I'm seeing at the moment is: Come Up With A Catchy Title and then Make The Thumbnail, before you even make the video. I get packaging is important, and I'm definitely guilty for falling for this advice. My new mantra is: What Would Casey Do?
Feel like there are so many things I wanna say after learning from and getting know about Casey, but when time comes to typing my words down, all I want is to say: Thank You , Casey. Sincerely ❤.
If you are looking for the REAL pen story extract, it's here 3:51 . And you'll see the story makes much more sense that the Short that is reedited to make him look like a *. This gift is a symbol for Casey who is a perfectionist. It might seem basic, but he puts hidden effort in it. Like the framing of the vlog, that seem "on the go" when in reality it's perfectly framed. He trusts his intern to do the job without double checking, so delegating his need for perfection. Then he discovers that seemingly on purpose the intern did skip some tasks. So he fires him. I mean in any company it would happen the same way, if the boss discovers that one product made by his company ended up looking half made, in a friend's house. It comes from "here is a silly pen, but perfectly crafted with a story because I love you" to "here is a pen". So when I read comments on the short saying that he has lost it because he has money, I think it's unfair.
I've seen a lot of Podcasts with Casey that seem to be pretty redundant in questioning, but this is very unique compared to all his other interviews. Thank's for asking all the right questions!
You’re the best Rich, saw you for the first time a few months ago.. you’re a wonderful human with such profound insights, incredible to see what you have done with these interviews
Thanks a ton Rich and Casey... He is probably the single biggest influence on my TH-cam career. I love when he talks about time and patience not being sexy...
I love Casey Neistat. He's always reminded me a little of Willy Wonka... that obsessive, genius, mastermind, artistic, creative individual that defies all odds placed against him. Great interview!
There will always be people who go to the extreme to get known.. Having said that, we will always seek quality after we have grown tired of the monotony of quantity..
WHAAAAAATTTT??!! MY Idol as a guest on my favourite podcast??!!!! I can't wait for this evening to come and watch 2 of my favourite human beings in conversation together.. Thank you guys!!!

47:13 not to be that guy, but the year was 1997, and the highest-grossing movie of all time, Titanic, won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Other years/films were: 2003/The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King 1994/Forrest Gump 2000/Gladiator, and as Rich so astutely said, 1939/Gone With the Wind. But I also completely understand Casey's point, and I would not say that the films I listed above are considered the pinnacle of the artform of cinema. Those sorts of films are always a more personal decision.
everyone wants to be big on yt! Casey is a true artist. he makes what he wants and moves on to the next. this is why he is so generous. he does not look back. he is too occupied w his life and what he does each day. i find this refreshing and liberating. Go Casey! when i saw him snow board thru NYC i thought this guy is best. he is having F U N Casey is a B I G artist. a granny here. Rich you aint so bad ! * been subscribed for years * but if it werent for Casey i would not have wondered inta YTLAND. also i just cannot be a healthy human w/out red meat. it saved my life literally. Thank YOU for all the conversations xxoo
Interesting in how the relationship between David and Casey is after the docu and how it’s fractured as it feels like Casey seen him for how he really was.
I was never interested in or watched any of Casey's videos for a long time. One day I decided to give his channel a try and became instantly addicted and binge-watched his channel. Now I will watch any video by or about him. If my channel would only be a small sliver of what he has achieved I would be able to die happy one day. Ya, I am getting old. :(
To this very moment, I don't know that I can count on more than one hand the number of TH-camrs I've seen who have elevated "vlogging" to an art form the way Casey has. This interview is wonderful because he himself has come to realize the act of solo shooting, editing, and uploading a video *is* the art. That's it. You can't deconstruct it or outsource it without it loosing its essence. And that essence is what I aspire to as well. No, I'm not trying to copy Casey when I work on vlogs, that would be absurd! But in my own little way, I too can see it as art and care *deeply* about it, the way Casey cares about his art. And maybe-some day long into the future-actually get a tiny bit good at it. ;P
People seem to struggle so much with work life balance but choose one is my motto. You either want to work or you don’t. Go to the extremes in both. Don’t get married or have kids if it’s a distraction.
Casey is being very honest about only wanting to work alone. In the culinary world, this is the common difference between a great cook and a chef. You have to be passionate about leading a team to be a chef. Casey is a very talented TH-camr but he's not a director. He's always struggled at leading a team.
Thank you so much Rich and Casey, both of you are inspiring men doing a beautiful work full-filling your purpose. Only with that you give to us all, All the best.
@casey I have probably 100+ videos of unlisted videos shared with specific people. I don't know about you but my mind thinks in pictures and movies and I create these memories so I can bring what I see to life to share those moments with others. This, more than anything is what drives my love of photography and video. There is also the peace in knowing it will be an archive of your life for your children, grandchildren, etc
This is so great. I’ll now go back and watch the other interviews with Casey but I really enjoy the pod. Glad to hear the bit about the SXSW interview. I had thought that when I was watching so glad to hear that’s why it’s so weird. Hoping I can see it someday, I’m really interested in how judgement plays into it 😄

I love the humility in Casey saying how it is a luxury to be able to move the family across the country, then back a few years later.
seems like such a cool guy
Didn't he fire his assistant because they didn't burn the rope on some cheap dollar store pens?
I’ve watched all of the Rich/Casey convos. Something about this one helped me more. Maybe because I’m exactly like him in the way that I have to work alone and my environment matters so much. Interesting seeing Casey with no filters or edits... the true raw talk, a side we dont usually see, loved it!
A lot of people delegate aspects of their videos to others, but Casey does everything. Casey is the GOAT of TH-cam.
