  • This is our third introduction video to the Hornet, based on a Work-in-Progress build. In this video, we take a look at the preflight, startup, taxi and takeoff procedures in the F/A-18C Hornet. While most of the startup functions are now complete, there are still a few more to go.

      Audible tones even sound the same. I was a crew chief on Ospreys but they use the same mission computer and avionics. Never been in an F18 but since it has similar avionics it took me about 3 times going from cold to flight ready to commit it to memory. Very in-depth, brought back all sorts of fun memories lol

    I have about 1500 hours in this aircraft. I'm absolutely amazed at the realism of this simulator. Spot on, even to the point of cycling the battery to quickly getting the aural tones on startup. Very impressive. I love this airplane......

    • @Bender2497
      @Bender2497 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My only comment is that you can wait for 15% to start the engine, not 20%.

    • @Bender2497
      @Bender2497 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My additional comment is that the aircraft actually will almost rotate for you. It gets very light at the nosewheel takeoff speed. The Super Hornet, however, doesn't like to get airborne, you have to force her to go flying.

    As a former F14 aviator this F18 check list and preflight was much shorter then mine. Someday I hope to have a computer strong enough to run DCS with the Tomcat add-on. I miss every day my home in the sky and the people I served with. Bravo Zulu on a great simulator.

    As a Former Marine Parachute Rigger who spent a lot of time in the cockpit of a F/A18C, I never understood a fraction of what the controls meant or did. This was an insightful look at what my pilots did every day and explains why I stood below them on the tarmac so long during pre flight. I never knew there was so much involved.
    I just wish I could run this game on my PC.

      I used to play that game a lot - until somehow my opponents where able to get missile lock on me so far before I could see them on radar etc that I figured they must have been using some sort of hack and then it wasn't fun anymore. When I first got X-Plane, I missed the carrier landing so many times until I found a copy of the POH and realized that starting the SIM on approach with the SIM's default loadout, mainly fuel, made me too heavy to slow down enough to safely land without dropping like a stone. Once I had the SIM configured in a way that was more consistent with real life it was far easier to - unless the simulated carrier decide to do a hard over turn as I reached the burble. I am not a pilot - but rank the F/A-18 as one of my favorite aircraft, along with the SR-71 and the Space Shuttle Orbiter.

    Back in the late 90s and early aughties Jane's was the go to for military realism. I still have fond memories of flying my Apache NOE while popping up over a ridge to rain hellfires on the unsuspecting tank convoy, dropping back down so they can't pick me up on radar, and hi tailing it back to base :). Best game of the century. Up until DCS World came out. I tried the first DCS:Blackshark back in the day and was impressed with the realism. It wasn't quite Jane's level at that time. Then DCS:World comes out and shattered expectations. Each new DLC they release is better than the last. I bought the KA-50 first (of course), then the Harrier, then the A-10C, a couple of other randos (F5e and Huey), and finally wound up with the F18 and couldn't be happier. I'm looking at picking up the F-14 from Heatblur Simulations on the next Steam sale :P I'm more familiar with the AWG-9 than the F18 suite. I was an AT in the Navy during the 80s when the Tomcat was still the big kid on the block and there were very few '18 squadrons around at the time, so I have a special place in my heart for the Tomcat.

    Wags, @13:58, the rudder check showed 15 degrees deflection, not 30. That is because your flaps switch was in Auto. If you move the flaps switch to half (or Full), you should get 30 degrees. You can see the deflection is 30 on the left DDI after the start of the first engine with the flaps switch in the full position. Also the flight manual says to move the throttle to idle at 15% for engine start - Page III-7-16 of A1-F18AC-NFM-000 . Otherwise a good basic run down for what is shaping up to be the most awesome module ever.

    This was super cool to see. I used to be able to run these up for high-power turns in VMFA-314. Only correction on your startup is the air turbine starter is run off the APU to turn the motors over for starting and not the driveshaft. The driveshaft on the motor then turns the AMAD for the all the accessories. Super fun to watch.

    I got taught in the raaf to set 15 degrees nose up on take off is that a normal procedure or was that just a one off type thing?? I’m still in training and would like to know. Thanks

    Amazing. What did you mean about needing to rewind the tape? Are the warning sounds on a tape?

    • @StrongHarm
      @StrongHarm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Data for the test is on the tape. The reason this is not hard coded on a chip is to allow for updates to the system. Part of the test is checking the voltage to explosive squibs that detonate the fire bottle frangible disks to allow the extinguishing agent to quickly flood the engine nacelle, so it's not simply a warning light test. The reason the data's on "tape" instead of transmitted or solid state device is for security and portability purposes. The tape also holds information specific to the pilot and mission. A physical medium is better suited to reliability and security.

      How did you get all this information? I would think even F/A-18 pilots don't know the systems that well.

    • @StrongHarm
      @StrongHarm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Are you asking me, or Matt Wagner? I know because I was an engineer in the USNavy. Matt knows because he develops simulators for the US Military. You can know too. Go to digitalcombatsimulator.com and get some aircraft modules. They come with detailed manuals to teach you everything you ever wanted to know about each bird. This is what they call a 'study sim' and it's better than pie.

    I am not a huge fan of the "Bitchin' Betty" voice in the hornet... I understand they needed a voice irritating in order to make the pilot react, but it is kinda too anyoning haha (the module looks fantastic and i cant wait to fly in the new version of DCS, aweseom job).
