Quick tip Hornet tip. When you drop the flaps, the FCS automatically drives the aircraft to 4 units of AoA so keep the power off until the jet settles or you will get a big upward pitch of the nose. The trim switch trims at 2 deg/sec with the flaps down, so if you drop the flaps, then hold "2 Mississippi" worth of nose up trim, it will get you "on speed" or close to it in short order. Be careful though. If you are fast, say 180kts or greater, the trim input will pitch the nose up as the system tries to establish 8 units of AoA. I usually try and do all of this in the break turn and let the FCS pull me through the turn as it drives up the AoA. Finally, if you are using the ICLS needles as a reference, remember that the FLOLS is set for a 3.5 deg glide slope, and the ICLS is set for a 3.0 deg glideslope. If you fly the needles all the way to the deck you will have a very low ball. ICLS is a great reference at the 90, but you need to transition to the ball as soon as you roll out in the groove.
Question for Waggs. Can you disable the ball tool?

Cool tip. Thank you. BTW, in an earlier comment, Wags said, ATM, it's automatic, but they are considering making a toggle off/on for it.

A couple tips from someone that has a lot of real traps. Use the auto throttle control function in the airplane. If you have the Thrustmaster throttle, It's the small red button under your left ring finger. Once activated it will show up in the HUD as ATC. This will make it much easier to get aboard. Now use pitch to control your glideslope.
Once you pick up the meatball on final, try not to be reactive to the meatball, waiting for a high or low indication. Assuming it's close to centered when you pick it up and you're around 700 fpm, flatten your approach with a little back pressure on the stick and look for the meatball to move very slightly above centered and then adjust back to a slightly lower pitch and drive the ball back to centered. Then repeat until touchdown. Now you're controlling the ball not the other way around. This technique was called "Crowning the Ball." years ago and helped me get aboard every time.
This technique works also with any airplane flying a glideslope.

Today is Jan 22 2023 and I got the Super Carrier module a week ago and the Hornet a week before that. So it's been a crash course (no pun intended) to get both under my fingers. I figured out the carrier pretty quick. The Hornet was a little tougher but I am getting it. I have done takeoff's and pattern work, no landings up until today. I just did my first landing without exploding. It wasn't a pretty one, but no death or damage. The previous attempts were too short, too long, too fast, too slow...and when you get the perfect one...done. Now I can unpucker my backside and relax. Just fine tunin' from here on out. Then night ops, then night ops in rain/heavy seas...

My first attempt trying to land in VR and I think I killed a lot of deck crew.

    Some critiques.
    1. Final Bearing of the angled deck is NOT BRC -10 deg, it's BRC -8 deg.
    2. On the downwind leg, after the break turn, you wanna be at 600' AGL, and 1.2-1.3 nm offset from TCN, no more. If you are 1.4 or 1.5, you will be VERY FAR WIDE.
    3. Also, on the approach turn, when you can see the 'rounddown' start the turn approx 27 deg.
    4. The arrival point shouldn't be 0.6nm, it should be more 0.8 nm, and about 350-380' AGL.
    5. Look to cross the wake (BRC, as TACAN line comes across the V/V at 45 deg angle) around 380' AGL. This'll set you up for a good start.
Still overall, great video. It's great to see the legacy of us Hornet nerds continue in a great sim like DCS.

It's looking better each time we see it, but there's some bad gouge in the video for those that want to fly the pattern correctly:
    1) In DCS since the Hornet on-speed is about 10 knots slower than the actual airplane, you'll need to tighten up the abeam distance a bit in order to fly a proper 27-30 degree AOB approach turn. IRL they use 1.3-1.4nm, for DCS 1.1-1.2nm is the sweet spot.
    2) You start your approach turn just a bit aft of the LSO platform when you can see the white of the round down. This does have some variation depending on how much natural wind there is.
    3) For Case 1 recoveries you should not be targeting a DME value (like 0.6 miles shown), you should be targeting a groove time of 15-18 seconds. A properly performed approach turn starting at the white of the round down will give you the desired 15-18 seconds.

I still don't understand how to bank properly in the pattern. Everything out there says to pull 1% of your airspeed in g's (e.g. 3.5g for 350 knots). Following this seems to put you way too close to the course line (less than the 1.3 suggested in the video), and needs a very deep bank (45 degrees?) to line up the airplane on final. In this video here though he goes MUCH less than the 1% (around 2.2gs for 350 knots, not 3g). So what's correct?

    • @JAR-STINGERS
      @JAR-STINGERS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Jazzy, the break turn and final turns are things that just get better and better with practice. You will get the hang of it. I found the most important factor is to figure out the final turn - i.e what distance abeam the course line works best so you roll out on center line. You should practice this with an empty jet with around 5-6k fuel as this will be your most common config after a mission.
Once you’re comfortable with your perfect abeam distance and final turn to centerline it makes the break turn easier to figure out as you can see how much you need to pull to end up on your desired abeam distance. Personally I found the recent updates corrected the abeam distance for me and I now aim for about 1.3nm. (I used to aim for 1.1!). Keep in mind you need to keep your onspeed AOA stable, any major deviations in AOA throws everything out during the final turn. Hope this helps - JAR (from the video).

@@Nghilifa I honestly don't think lack of a dynamic campaign is a reason not to buy it.
It's more the abundance of game breaking bugs, the game crippling patches, basic features that don't function or have limited functionality such as AI in air and on ground behavior, ATC, etc.
If it weren't for those even without a dynamic campaign the game would be incredible. It's still a really good game and I'm sure new players will enjoy it.

hey great question so i did air traffic control on the Carl Vinson and to answer your question during case 1 approaches speaking is kept to a minimum except for safety of flight calls. there are required call points that let you know where each aircraft is. also something not mentioned but is important, aircraft are separated by altitude and only 6 aircraft are allowed in the pattern at a time. also he mention talking to approach but the tower is actually the air boss (air officer) or the mini boss (mini) as for talking to aircraft the side number is his identity so you call side number than your control instruction: 305 take angels 1 (305 climb or descend to 1000 feet) hope this helps.

Err, there is something peculiar in the ATC
    @ 9:05 Wags: '3 miles'
    Pilot radio: 'Tower 3 0 5 overhead angels 1 state 5.3'
    Tower: gives BRC
    Pilot: acknowledges tower
Sounds like DCS wants to do more or less official ATC protocol, though this is classified, but then again it appears though thru my research, 'hot mission' FA18 jet recovery procedures are 'Zero lip' which is radio silence, i.c. there will be no radio communication between wing and tower after lead check-in at anywhere from 25~100nm calling in to mother. But perhaps shuttle flights, trainees, newbies and auxiliary flights coming in.
Also, radio procedure that would be Not 'Zero Lip', when a jet/wing arriving at the starboard overhead as per this Wags video, either after the break Charlie or direct in,
the pilot (only lead talks to tower until LSO) would still call 'initial', not @ 9:05' .. overhead angels 1, state xx .. ', which is the call for 'overhead' which is the pattern 1-2-3-4, and the lowest pattern being 2000' (thus 'angels 2') or direct in and according to an old NATOPS be 1500', so that would be 'at 1500 feet', never ' .. angels 1 ..'.
Initial as stated in the video is after Charlie at 3 miles upwind heading for starboard, so the call should be
'(Tower) 305 at the initial (, state xxx)' without anything else,
and the call in sequence after this would be the break past the boat, downwind by the flight lead.
Also the BRC I hear mentioned by DCS Marshall/Tower in the next call would be mentioned way ahead in the recovery, probably already at check-in many miles away and only mentioned again when this would change, and then again this is rather theoretical procedure for as I mentioned, it appears hot mission recovery are done without radio calls, but for at final when calling the ball and the LSO starts guiding in the finals.
All this will be different per ship, per year, per operation, per different wing, and the NATOPS still on the internet later than 2004, and these only mention the ACL automated quasi-instrument landings, not CASE I anymore, though there is a T45C NATOPS that does mention
    " ii. Initial (3 NM astern): “405, initial” " at page 2-18
    so, not 'tower' and no ' .. overhead .. ', no ' .. angels 1 .. ' and no ' .. state 5.3 .. ',
and I would think this T45C still current CASE I procedure, would be the official procedure for radio calls that are not 'Zero Lip' FA18C sorties.
There is a lot more to say, too much, but I know many DCS squadrons just invented radio procedures because there is not really a human Tower (they're not called 'tower', I think by the way) in DCS, and it appears DCS now does the same, but still, one should stick to the logic of the flight procedure and the stages one is in.
Then again perhaps an actual pilot might give some hints about what is really going on, though I think to have noticed, actual Hornet drivers are so accustomed to their actual radio calls - and Zero Lip - , they cannot be bothered with what is mentioned in NATOPS, for that is a past station for which they have no more use whatsoever and they are not allowed disclosure of any actual - current - radio calls.

Hi Wags, great video and to see more content on the supercarrier. With all due respect i have some constructive criticism to the video.
I think the intro misses two crucial informations in the description to make the CASE I Pattern really work:
    1. Carrier setup
Carrier has to have a relative head wind of 25-30 kts above the deck to make the geometry and timing of the pattern work. If the carrier is to slow you will always end up to close, to high and offset to the right of the centerline if you hit all checkpoints. If the carrier is to fast its always to far, to low and offset to the left.
    2. Landing weight
The F/A-18 has to be down to the maximum allowed carrier deck landing weight. I see many people on MP training servers attempt CASE I patterns with Hornets that are well overweight. The result is that the onspeed IAS is higher than what works properly for the CASE I pattern. The baseturn diameter is to wide and the groove will be to short due to the higher IAS at higher weight.
On the other side the intro contains information that IMHO will only confuse people especially those just learning the carrier landings. In the F/A-18 with its nice AoA indicator and E-bracket, i do not need to know my pitch angle in relation to the horizon. If i put the flight director on the carrier, the plane is flying onspeed and if i matched the checks, i should immediatly be able to get an idea of my glide slope by either looking at the ball or just referencing to see if the FD is roughly at the -3° mark. No need to check if the nose it pointed at +5°.
    Keep up the good work.
    Best regards
