  • UPDATE: I recently purchased their 2024 wool packer coat and wanted to mention, the wool used is not from the same manufacturer as the wool shown in this video. It’s softer and feels thinner, it still kept me plenty warm in -35’F. After reaching out for more details on their fabric weight per sq/yd and they were unable to provide it or disclose any additional information. The coat is still beautiful, but it’s not wool from Pendleton.
    Is old Filson better?
I made this video because I didn't see anyone taking a deep dive on Filson's ownership history and how their unchanged relationship with suppliers has or has not impacted products.
It's poorly edited and could be better, but it's the idea of Imperfect Action.
I'd rather put a video out into the world so you can ask questions and see first hand Filson Products from different eras.
I wasn't paid by Filson, I'm not sponsored. It's to just hopefully add some value to fans of the brand.
    Cheers!

I’ve had a hodge podge of Filson from the late 80’s til now. I can’t tell the difference. Maybe there is one, but if there is I doubt it’ll show without some kind of scientific test. Plus, there have always been slight differences in Filson products continuously regardless of year. Sometimes the mackinaw wool will have a different weight per yard based on color or pattern. Sometimes two identical sized shirts will fit different based on whether it’s red or blue. I rather like the funky small-batch manufacturing qwerks. It’s fun.

This bag is new old stock from 9 years ago. I think if you got a 2018 or later bag, they are built much differently.

Hi! Thanks for watching, you’re right the 257 is 9 years old, the medium field bag is 6 years old, and my tin cloth duffle is from 2018. I’d say the medium field bag is the same quality, but if I come across a newer bag from the last 2 years I’ll certainly take a look.

They are different. Density of wool is different! Thats major.

To be fair, filson has always had a 2oz difference between their plaid fabrics and solids. So the grey and black plaid vs the solid brown would’ve always been different, even if the brown vest was twenty years old. However, I recently got the new green and gold plaid packer coat and the wool is entirely different in softness and feel. It feels thinner, but I have no way of confirming. I asked Filson for their sq /yd fabric weight instead of linear yard and they said they were unable to provide it. It certainly isn’t a Pendleton wool, BUT, I did wear the coat in 17 degree Fahrenheit in a t-shirt and the wool did fine. Then layered up a bit more on a day with a wind chill down to -36 degrees Fahrenheit and was almost too hot. So take that for what you will. I hope that helps some.
