It's not always the stepper motor causing the problem. There is an O-ring that is on the oil pickup tube in the oil pan, When the O-ring fails it will have loss of oil pressure. When I got my truck it always ran at 35 psi at idle and 70 mph, Lol and one day while driving it went down to 5 psi and the motor started ticking and after towing it home. when I pulled the drain pan and the pickup tube the O-ring was broke in 3 spots. after replacing the O-ring it now runs 40 psi at idle and 66 psi at 70 mph.
hey 1A Auto I have a 2000 Chevy Tahoe like Jacob Martin I have changed O-ring, and pickup tube also sending unit and oil level sensor. I believe that is my problem also is the motor behind the cluster thank you for the video's honestly without 1A Auto I would at a stand still with this thing.
This was a really good video and I really wish I could if found it much sooner. This video really shows you guys know your stuff. I have bought a few parts already from 1aAuto, this video is probably going to make me a lifetime customer
I have the same problem, I just replaced the oil pressure switch and it still says the same thing. I saw another video that the oil pressure tube has a rubber gasket and that get worn and cracks. So I'll have to check that out next.
It’s also worth a try to do an engine flush. I had a problem where my oil pressure was starting normal, then soon falling to zero(ish), shut down and restart and the pressure again went to normal, then fell soon afterwards. I consulted the oracle that is TH-cam and this exact problem was fixed with a Liquid Molly motor flush. ***provided you aren’t getting bad noises*** it’s worth a try before putting time and money into a repair
I have a 95 chevy k1500 tbi. Recently did oil change nd started doing the same thing once truck was hot. The oil pressure drops when im at a stop and picks up to below 40 when i accelerate. I changed oil pressure switch and that didnt work. Now there is a buzzing sound coming from the cluster. I went the expensive route and changed the oil pump (fresh full synthetic 10-30 oil as well) but still having the same issue. Note: the engine was rebuilt about 40k miles ago. Next I'm replacing the oil pressure switch pig tail. Im almost thinking it's gonna be a bad cluster. My truck runs great btw. Anyone with opinions or ideas would be appreciated.
So I have a 2012 Chevy Silverado. My oil pressure goes from a little under 40 to close to 20 oil pressure after a few minutes running. I’ve changed the oil pressure sensor, changed the filter to the sensor, and replaced the o-ring on the pickup tube. Still doing the same thing goes from around 40 to 20 oil pressure. Engines making no sounds and no sludge or anything in the pan. I am lost lol
*UPDATE* Replaced the oil sending unit sensor and it's holding steady at 45-50 psi, before it would fluctuate up & down a lot during throttle, now it dose it a little bit. Fixed the problem Thanks
On my 06 avalanche 5.3 the oil pressure gauge is doing the same thing. I replace oil pressure sensor and oil pick up oring and that didn’t fix it. I check oil pressure with manual gauge connect to the engine and it reads 20 psi at idle and it doesn’t have no engine noise. Could it a bad oil pump or bad camshaft bearings
my is doing the same thing I replaced the o ring on the pick up tube and the oil presure sensor and stil doing same thing the Tahoe runs great and it doesnt miss or knock it just freaks me out when it dips to zero . has any one had any similar problems with this I'm hoping it's not the oil pump .
Did you use a mechanical gauge to see what it really was doing? Yeah, these gauges have issues. I replaced pump because of the ticking issue (no other issues). Will likely get my instrument cluster rebuilt due to other issues.
Well I just got done riding in a 1987 1500 5.7. The engine was making all kinds of sounds coming off the highway. I told the guy driving which I do maintenance on his apartments and was his 87 year old dads truck he was driving that somthing was very wrong. Pulled into the service station and pulled the dipstick, There was nothing. I told him to go into the store get 2 bottles of oil. Dumped them in pulled the dipstick still nothing. Told him to go back in get 2 more bottles. Dumped a 3rd bottle in. Pulled the dipstick and was barley nothing. Put the 4th bottle in and was full. Started the engine and it was quiet and running good. How the hell that damn thing did not seize up is beyond me. Even starting it up only a small puff of oil smokes comes out. There was damage done but very little. I practically did a full oil change minus the filter in a gas station parking lot.
Yea I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 2wd and I've noticed this on the oil gauge. One min it's reading 40 or below and I'll turn it off and come back and it's at 60. I couldn't make since of it.
2008 Tahoe idles at 12-14 and runs on the highway at 20psi. Just changed the oil pressure switch and the check engine light came back on 25 minutes later.

The Oil Pressure guage Stepper motor on our 04 GMC Sierra is failing, see what this looks like and note that it can happen to any of the gauges. If you have the right tools you can replace them but it is a difficult repair.
I have a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3 L my oil pressure when the car truck starts is at 40 when it’s warmed up it’ll go down to about 2530 when I give it a lot of gas or wrap it up or take off pretty fast it’ll go up to 40 but going down the highway it’s below 40 pounds or 40 on the oil pressure gauge. I’ve already changed the sensor and the screen is it bad to run my truck this way?
I was going to out in a mechanical on my 2000 Oldsmobile Bravada .was told it wouldn't run right with the computer ..to run a T off the motor and have both ..
okay mine does that exact thing on my 94 chevy with a 350 small block it’s a 1500 but i know my gage isn’t messed up cause my oil gage will hit the red lines and then bam truck dies but i can start it back up but it goes to noarmal on a high rev or throttle when driving but it dies when its trying to idle so i find it difficult to drive my only truck in west salem when there’s tons of traffic and can’t go no where five minuets away with out it takin a half hour so what do you think is my issue on to why i’m losing oil pressure when it’s warming up?
I have a 04 gmc yukon xl the gauge at cold start goes to 40 then when warm drops to 20 and idle below 20 but when running down the highway it will go almost to 40lbs is that a bad pump or what could cause that because my engine runs great no knock or lack of horsepower but i would like to know before i blow it up on accident lol
When I start my Silverado oil pressure gauge is that zero the alarm comes on and I also get a reading as soon as I step on the gas pedal the Gage resume to normal, this happens every time I start my truck. From what I can tell by reading the comments and watching the videos there's a motor behind the dash gauge that needs replaced correct me if I'm wrong thank you good advice well appreciated
Stepper motors for the entire gauge cluster can be had today, send it out to be rebuilt by numerous companies doing it. Also if the Guage is going bonkers then that fix could be 1 of 3 issues 1. Cam bearing 2. Clogged pickup 3. Pressure sensor on the back of the block

My 2003 GMC (Same exact car) show normal, then with the first engine, rave goes to zero. Randomly up and again zero. Check engine light, annoying error chime are popping up too but no problem with engine performance, what so ever. I believe its the Oil Pressure Sensor and Filter that needs to be changed but don't know how to reach and perform the task. Do you have any video clip on that?
There are videos for it. You need the special socket that fits over the unit (spark plug socket won't work) after you undo the electrical connector. Universal joint and variety of extensions are helpful. You likely don't have a screen under the sending unit (2007 and newer with AFM have those). I've changed mine twice.
My oil pressure starts around 20 when I start it... Then when I begin to drive it, it bounces between 0-20 depending on if I’m driving or sitting with it being near zero when I’m idling....Checked the oil , and replaced the oil pressure gauge sensor and it’s still the same... Any chance it’s the stepper motor?

Mine is doing the same thing but first made my engine go into limp mode thought it was transmission replaced it and same thing I can’t take it to the shop because I live far from the city when the speed goes up it gets stuck in 30 jerks and changes and increase speed. Replace knock sensors because the light was on other than that it was fine is a 02 GMC Sierra 5.3 basically same engine as Chevy. Can anyone help please

My 06 Escalade 6.0 lq9 running M1 5w30 never goes to 60 PSI, its always between 35-45. Maybe 50 if i stomp on it. No oil burning, no ticking. No known issues. I thought that was normal. Now you have me wondering. Is there something wrong?
O ring in oil pickup tube. Mine is failing and I only have 132k on an 04 2500hd. Idles around 35 and I can see if flutter. Step on it and psi jumps to 60. Also got a knock. 4$ o ring and a 50$ oil pan gasket and time to fix. It is a common problem.
Oil pump pickup tube o-ring needs to be replaced! They get smashed during installation on the assembly line. Once they get some miles on them they look pressure by. A dead giveaway of this problem is when you start the truck and it stays below 40 and you hit the gas and oil psi doesn't move very much. Hope this helps?
Hi there, have you fixed this problem? i have the same problem with my 2005 chevy tahoe. when im driving more than 300 km the oil pressure get lost when im restarting the engine, everithing is fine again. Have you solved the problem ? Kind regards and thanks for the video.
+Friedolin Herter If you have an erratic gauge it might be a bad oil pressure sending unit. Here is a link to them. Hope this helps you out. goo.gl/AuZJLs
1A Auto Parts thank you for the fast answer and the link. I have already changed the oil pressure unit, since that time I can drive 300km till the pressure goes down. Before changing it was maximum 200 km. After a restart everything is fine and I can drive more than 200 km more.
I have a 2013 avalanche replaced oil pump in pickup tube replaced oil sensor and screen have good oil pressure running down the road and slowly the oil pressure gradually goes down I put it in neutral turn off engine and restart oil pressure is back again don't make no sense to me.

It is 80 at idle (aka always 80?) Could be a bad oil pressure sender unit (if you have 2007 or newer, could be a dirty screen below the oil pressure sender unit), could be bad stepper motor, especially if the gauge goes to the 6 o'clock position. It just depends.
I wonder if anyone can help me. Ive been having thesame issues with my 310,454 mileage 2012 gmc Sierra sle 5.3L. I've changed the oil pressure sensor, new wires, new plugs, new alternator, new battery, new head gaskets. The timing tensioner was broken so i replaced the timing chain and tensioner. I also replaced the o ring on the pick up tube inside the oil pan. I also had a collapsed lifter that i had replaced. My voltage meter starts up and goes to 14 volts like it should. While I'm driving it goes down to 10 volts and pretty much remains there until i shut it off. Now after all the work that was done to it, i start it up and put it into drive and it stalls. I'm still having low oil pressure troubles as well. Can anyone tell me what i can do to fix this truck?
I have the same problem! I already replaced the oil pump and pickup tube along with the time chain on my 02 Chevy Avalanche 5.3l! I still have lift noise and my gauge fluctuates. It starts at 40 and then ends up at 20! I need a solution!!!!!
Having same issue on my 08 6.0 cutaway van. Replaced my oil pump, oil pickup unit with o-ring, and the oil sending unit, no pre filter under my sending unit from factory why I don’t know but I’m running same pressures. Still problem exists. Help me

I have an 04 GMC Envoy that had to have the entire instrument cluster replaced because of the bad stepper motors.
Mines a 2014 but that's exactly what mine does what do you think it might be? I'm hoping not the pump or bearings. But It doesn't run rough at all
Got the exact same problem i hope its nothing bad truck runs good it only has the lifter noises once in a while
Is there a follow up to this video?

probably the best and cheapest way is get a oil gauge and install it under the dash and get a new oil sending unit !

Send rhe dash for a rebuild.. Or. Mount a AFTER market. Oil. Guage. And pull the beeoer
I go to start my 97 k 1500 Silverado and the oil pressure gauge does not move
so 40 to 60 psi is good
Thanks helpful
Check grounds. Engine bay grounds also. As far as oil pressure. O ring for inlet tube.
Ram it into a brick wall

I have the same problem! I already replaced the oil pump and pickup tube along with the time chain on my 02 Chevy Avalanche 5.3l! I still have lift noise and my gauge fluctuates. It starts at 40 and then ends up at 20! I need a solution!!!!!
Change the oil Pressure switch?

Still problem exists. Help me
