So cool to see this interview with Chris and just how well he has done. Chris and I were Berklee buds in the late 80s, early 90s til we both left. He'd come to the house I was renting and we'd jam in the basement, playing John Patitucci tunes and CCEB among other things, or we'd jam in the sheds or in rehearsal rooms at Berklee. He was a force to be reckoned with back then and I love how successful he has been. Well deserved and still such a nice guy like he was back then
I am only exaggerating a little. I feel both fortunate and excited to witness such a wonderful interview. I felt like I was in the Bass Mint hanging with you. Every time I think you can't top your studio tours, they keep getting better. This was one of my favorite. I learn so much. Not in a step-by-step way, but they get me excited to research the gear, players, riffs, etc. Yes!

As a bass player one of the methods that I used when practicing is to play every note on the neck so I could hear what it sounds like. The scale was not important. I would do slow runs up and down the neck and increase the speed as my fingers warmed up. I also would practice a lot by not looking at the neck but concentrating, in my mind, where my fingers were in relation to the neck. If I did not have to worry about where my fingers were I could watch the other players and move when they did. I worked with people who were very good at improvising and would take off in a different direction in a song than it started at. For me the big thing is seeing it in my mind rather than physically looking at it. Great video as usual.

Same here! I never had to think about left hand placement when the cue or click started!
23:43 - The late, great, Dr. Oliver Sachs actually talked about this phenomenon in his book "Musicophillia" and discussed a neurological basis for being able to practice -- and *improve*! -- by simply imagining your body playing the instrument. It's a great book~

Hello Warren, I found this video to be very uplifting and encouraging. I'm currently working on my bachelor's for music theory, and to be candid, I get a little bogged with learning things like secondary dominants, mode mixture and the Neapolitan chord. So it is wonderful to see that super successful class acts like yourself and Chris enjoy theory for the fun of it. And so, I'll keep on keeping on with my studies.

my basschain ; P-bass to 50's Bassman amp to loadbox to line out in Neve style preamp.
dial in the sound on Bassman tone and volume controls (according to genre of music and desired distortion level). Works on everything.....
I was watching You Oughta Know from Woodstock '99 and heard Chris's bass playing for the first time completely fell in love with his tone. That specific tone is exactly what I have been trying to find in a bass and rig, but have yet been successful. Would love to know what he used for that tour.

Yet another winner!!! I personally have a Rickenbacker 4003 midnight blue bass that I run through an Amplitube SVT virtual rig that sounds amazingly cool. If I could afford it I'd get a real SVT 300 watt head and 8 10 cab to mic, but alas, I just have the virtual one. I'm a big Squire fan as well as Jaco and Collin Moulding from XTC. I love his use of melody within the song structure. He compliments the songs harmonies and melodies without taking away anything from the song. Check him out he's very cool indeed. Has is always seen as a rhythm instrument which I disagree with. The bass, in my humble opinion, is the glue that allows the guitars to showcase their particular brand of crunch and aggro force. I've always written my bass parts as a melody that, hopefully, compliments what the other instruments are lacking. At least that's my take on it, right or wrong. But I've been told my bass lines are worth listening to!🤓Stay Marvelous Warren!!

The index and ring fingers are close to the same length and sound much closer to each other than index and middle. It eliminates having to angle your hand in the upright technique. Just a thought.

I always love it when you are talking with other musicians about music. No offense sir about the tech stuff, but I'm still a player first and an engineer (NOT) 2nd. And it struck me when you mentioned mentors how so many of us seem to have the similar experiences. (Got to love the classic rock & roll as it pointed all of us to the really great musicians.) We started out with the Great Ones (Who, Jeff Beck, Jimi and so on.)...who pointed us to the great blues players (Jimi mentored with Buddy Guy for years off and on, and is who he got his chops from) and then on to the great Jazz players like Jaco and so on. Like you and Chris I was fortunate that way from where I grew up. Finding Danny Gatton from just gigging around the bars and clubs in Georgetown. (Check him out on TH-cam...their are tutorials he made, concert footage and lots of other great tracks of his music) The Nighthawks, then later on in Miami meeting up with great Jazz musicians like Steve Bailey (jazz bass player...if you haven't heard this guy you've got to hunt him down on the web and listen.), Sandy Patton, Ira Sullivan and on and on. Even though I can't play like them my mind soaked it up and their influence comes through as I will always look for a "Different" way to play the same thing.
The other "Light Bulb Going off In My Head" was the quote you made about Jaco and his rehearsing/practicing in his head more than hands I've scared myself a few times recently from that.
See I don't really "Play" the piano, but I use my midi controller to play, bass, and other instruments that I either don't have or don't play. Last week I was looking for the right sounding counter point to the acoustic guitar track on a project I've been working on now for over two months. I realized that piano was the best choice. So I just played. Didn't think about scales or anything like that as the key is a pain in the butt to begin with on the piano. Just did little fills throughout the song tracks to add some brightness and air to the mix. When I played it back I had somehow managed to get the piano notes to flow nearly perfectly around the guitar picking notes of the other tracks. They complimented each other almost perfectly and only required a few minor adjustments in the midi editor. Again... I DON'T PLAY THE PIANO, but I knew what I wanted in my mind and by "Not Over Thinking" all the music theory stuff it worked totally.
And your comments about the great engineers who came up as players. That's so absolutely spot on point. For them it's like the studio was a new musical instrument to play, not just transformers and tubes.

The Steve Bailey Video has some great live playing but the tutorials are the real value. You will see Steve doing "One Finger" picking as well as great hand movements for the left hand to make it much easier to move through the scales. Steve was exactly like the way he is in the videos. He was always a blast to talk to and hang out with, and of course an amazing honor when he'd let me sit in and play blues with his bands. Yikes I was fortunate!! :-)

A non instrument exercise that works for me is drumming with my right hand fingers. I once found that I can do double speed drum-rolls with 2 fingers and thought, hey what's going on. So I had to translate that to playing on strings. A good right hand ability is often what makes things possible and fluent. Nice friendly guy too.

I was talking to Rob Zombie shortly after he disbanded White Zombie, about writing and recording and he was talking about quality players like Chris Chaney who can knock shit out in one take- effortlessly and effectively. Such a great player. Inspiring. I'll never forget that.
