I have to say I've been truly blessed to be able to do what I do for a living, it's taken many years and an enormous amount of effort to build this into a career and I feel truly fortunate to now be able to give back to everyone here! So many of you have been so extremely supportive of the channel! Thank you for all of your positive, informative and insightful remarks that help everyone here learn from each other! Amazing!!! After years away from production, I'm finally starting to fulfill what was my childhood dream. Having vague recollections of once intuitively knowing how to acheive in the air what I heard in my head, but not quite remembering... I find you here on the TH-cams @Warren. Just the mentor I need! What fun, reverence, and energy you intone! I've now only a little TASCAM digital (24 bit/48k) 24 track, a Cakewalk DAW, and a few cheap small and large condensers, but they are enough for now, to hash out working methodoligies again. I look forward to reacquainting my mind with how it feels to conceive a project and acheive it. Early on I realized that if I mixed to please my taste, it was better than people were asking for. I like giving people that thrill almost as much as satisfying my own ears lol. Thanks for doing these videis man! Cheers!
Warren is really awesome as an interviewer. He keeps is questions short and to the point and gives Craig time to answer, explain, and elaborate. Can't stand interviewers that are obsessed with the sound of their own voice
@@Producelikeapro Oh wow, a reply to a comment on a 5 year old video within 15 minutes? You're definitely a class act! Very sad to hear about Craig's passing, it's like losing an entire library of knowledge. It's great to see how many people loved him and his work. As a novice of production, your videos have helped me learn a lot! From mixing to artist relations and much more, so thank you! Hope you're well and staying safe!
As a part of the Studio One console design team, it was a huge privilege to work on a console that it is still in use. A huge shoutout to Dean Jensen and Don Wolford who headed up the team. It was one of the highlights of my multi-decade carrier.
GREAT VIDEO! I was in L.A. this past March (2015) and stopped at Sunset en route to LAX. I told Craig that I was a producer in Tokyo on my way to New York, and he was very welcoming, and took the time to show me the entire facility. I'm very appreciative of him taking the time out to show an "unknown" one of the most famous and important studios in the world!
Craig seems like very pleasant gentleman... Most studio managers have a stifling air about them that can ultimately hinder the creative process, but Craig seems like someone who is actually genuinely excited for you to be at "his" studio doing your work. Props to Craig, and props to you Warren, these are fantastic, and can make people respect music even more so
Hi Zakk Johnson yes Craig is a great Studio Manager! Glad you enjoyed the video! It was a lot of fun to make! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro Blackbird is blast... Studio D is fantastic... Next time you come to Nashville you should hit up Vance Powell's Sputnik Sound a couple streets over... He has been doing those Dave Cobb records over there and it is pure art
H Zakk Johnson yes I worked in Studio D while I was there. I know Dave, will have to check out Vance's studio next time I'm in Nashville, thanks for the tip! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Insane gear, etc, but I particularly liked the dog at the end. Every studio needs a dog. Relaxes the client (unless it makes them sneeze!) Charming little, if un-introduced (shame!) little fellow. Seriously, the history of that place is awe-inspiring. Thanks, Warren, for putting these studio tours together with such passion, to let us see these legendary meccas of our industry. Well done, mate. Cheers.
Hi GBS Records thanks very much! I have my own studio dog Ozzy! He's a Morkie, half Yorkie and half Maltese! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro Aww, little Ozzy! Well I hope Ozzy makes an appearance in one of your videos. Perhaps when you give us a tour (hint, hint) of your own studio. (speaking of small requests, with your large audience and educational influence, I would love to see a bit on the importance of protecting our most important asset: our hearing! Carrying earplugs everywhere, for things like mowing the lawn, etc. Apparently many artists, like Chris Martin for example, deeply wish they had protected their hearing more.) Thanks, Warren, keep up the inspiring work, cheers.
Hi GBS Records use the Tour is coming up soon! And Ozzy may well be featured! Agreed protecting your hearing is imperative!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Awesome video! Studio 2 hasn't changed much since I watched the Doobies record a rhythm track for their Fault Line album. Donn Landee and Ted Templeman were so gracious. When Jimmy Isaacson, the Head Engineer at the time, offered me a 2nd engineer job I had to turn it down to finish school. Love the mic inventory. Used so many of those in Chicago & Indy studios in the late 70's & early 80's.
I'm just rolling with so much joy right now, i mean the history, that being shared, the introduction to the actual vocal booth, it just popped in his head, an now we work hard to separate vocals,i mean this is amazing just hearing this history...in music...

Hi noisesoundtonevibe Yes it's an amazing studio with a wonderful History! Agreed all their own designed equipment is amazing! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Watching your videos really illustrates why recording was/is so expensive in a proper studio. I can't even begin to guess how much money is invested in gear here. Just imagine the monthly electric bill for this facility. So much history, so much eye candy for gearheads, just a great series you got going here. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

Love these kinds of videos. Very educational. Was familiar with the studio but you covered a lot of stuff I didn't know. Loved that you did a lengthy tour, and their mic locker... wow! Very generous of the studio to allow you to film all that. Thank you and Sunset Studios for putting this together.
Hi andrewssama Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Yes truly blessed to have been able to look around their extensive mic collection!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren, Thanks so much for doing these studio interviews & tours. It is a thrill for a home studio guy like me to get a peek behind the curtain of the biggest and best studio's in the world. Cheers !! Steven
Sunset Sound! Handclaps sound most amazing in Studio 1, in fact, all our best handclaps were done there. Sometimes we actually lay down on our backs directly inside the echo chamber, almost on top of each other, and hummed our bass lines for half of our first album because a) it sounds amazing, and b) to give our a bass player a reference so that he could play in time while tracking (yet, truth be told, we did wind up lowering his tracks so low that all you hear now is us hummers). Studio 3 was special for us. We wore raspberry berets and everyone had to have purple undies or else... yes, we swore we'd cane the offender! Ha. Just joshin'. We did, however, make that person do lay ups on the b ball court in size 5 stacks, a la Le Prince, and baby, then, you knew you were alive. We called them bunion makers. Viva la Sunset Sound!
It`s Just crazy how mutch you know your stuff , I watch your video at work fixing pc and i have to say that I learn something every time . Some of my musician friends have started watching your channel and we talk about some ot your technic at our weekly writhing/composing session our first EP will have a lot of your spirit ... Thanks again
Hi +Michel Doucet Fantastic! That sounds great! I really appreciate it!! So glad to be able to help!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Been going back through all the PLAP videos since discovering Warren's excellent resource last year and this video has been my favorite purely based on being an extremely badass walk through recording history...not too much technique talk, some great nuggets here & there, the real meat of it was the incredible studio tour with full historical information given by two of recordings big brains. Video should carry a XXX label because that mic porn was obscene! lol Just nonchalantly, "here's 4 U47's, 10 U87's, etc..." Unbelievable! Thanks Warren & Sunset Sound for giving us a glimpse into one of the top flight studios ever built.
Great walkaround - thank you ! as a DAW user who hasnt flown a 'real' desk since about 2001 - this really reminds me what I'm missing :) and funnily enough the last desk I had was full of P&G faders - they are sooooo smooth
Hi Jon Steadman, Composer Got to love P&G faders!! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I agree Warren! 'When IS the book coming out?" haha I love your channel… your love for the history of legendary recordings MIXED with the education of the recording process, all I can say is thank you for all you do! :-)
Wow, that is producing and outright music heaven right there hahaha. It must be an absolute dream having the opportunity to create in a studio like that! Thank you so much, Warren! Your videos and knowledge have helped me realize what I want to do and strive for in music and life in general lol! I watch your videos on the daily, and it is an absolute blessing for you to share your expertise, humility, and knowledge- it’s really inspiring!!!
Why didn't they show the echo chambers? Probably the most exciting feature left of the studio. For me it certainly isn't a board from 1984! I'm captivated by the original 1962-1968 tube sound. By the way, does any one know of any solid hits made in stuidio 1? Always wondered this.
Love this channel, even though I don't do any engineering/production. Loads of cool gear and studio knowledge. Thumbs up for the Smiths reference as well that was cool.
Nice to see this kind of studio. You do know your outboard gear. It's a lot, spanning over 50 years. The mic's menu was massive. The best I've used is the modern U87. I tried the modern C12 but it did not work for me. On stage I used a Beyer mic. I can't work out what model it must have been from 60-70's but it was high, bright metallic and cut through lead. I did the Hollies-Beatles harmonies and also sharp raw blues tracks. Shure & Beyer was common and I wish I could figure out that model it must have been? I used a Fender Jazz bass but later switched to playing Hammond and vocals as a job. I have owned a Steinway built while the manufacturing was still in Germany so it was called Grotrian Steinweg. Perfect shape, so light touch with no heavy hammer and lightning fast repetition mechanic. i had it in my flat haha. It took up most of the living room. My guts tell me you have been performing rock on stage. Very interesting video, many thanks.
Hi +rawstarmusic Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! I have to agree the reissue green C12 is not a good representation of the original at all. I love the Beyer M160 that's a great Ribbon Mic. That old Steinweg must have been a beautiful Piano. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Steve Antoniazzi thanks very much! Yes Sunset is such a wonderful studio with an amazing history! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I always smile when I see the Behringer digital 32 band eq , same model i own. When someone disses my EQ for being cheap . I say its good enough for Sunset Sound and many of my friends home studio's.
Hi acdcangusyoungmalcom I imagine they are assignable, however I think they are Aux sends to effects, Craig was saying people love using faders to send to effect as opposed to rotary pots! But I'm sure you could use them to send to headphones as well and create sub mixes. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi RottenCryptStudios thanks very much! Really glad to be able to show everyone such a wonderful Studio! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I applied for an engineering job at Sunset Sound and actually got an interview with one of the assistant engineers. During the interview, I was asked a question, which, in retrospect, I realize was more of a "what's the personality of this guy?" type of question than a technical one. I realized when I was driving home that I had answered that question 100% wrong. Of course, with ten other guys applying for the job, I didn't get it. It's odd how you see those potential giant forks in your life's path in the rearview mirror.
Hi wardcheryldarcie Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Yes what a mic collection!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Anthony Anzalone yes Craig is a great guy and was very gracious to give us a guided tour of the Studio! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
That was a fun look at some history and almost as fun as watching the kid in the candy store, yea that would be you ogling the mics! ;) When you guys walked into the "room where the machines live", I remember those tape machines back when I went to school in the early 80's, brings back some great memory's. Thanks for the fun and can't wait for the next installment!
I've started watching your interviews at different studios with increasing apreciation and interest...but this one is just fantastic. I really think you should have given Cray way more time though.
Wow, you have a super dope setup! I am currently building a pro solar-powered studio into the back of a box truck. Space is EXTREMELY limited, but I still hope to consistently crank out top quality tracks like you're capable of doing 🤘
Nice tour. Thanks, Warren. Small correction though, I think the ELA M 251 was actually AKG made. Telefunken contracted them to make that after they lost their Neumann distro deal. So, no Neumann linage there. Dig your videos and I've learned a lot. Keep 'em coming!
@@Producelikeapro Warren....man I wish I had the $$ to come out with my band and have a guy like you helping us!! BTW I loved the bit you did with Simon Phillips! ..My all time fave! Best to you man!!
I also would love to see you do a video on classic EQ's / EQ points or how to use them. Like popular tricks on Pultec, Classic EQ points on Neve and API etc.
+Produce Like A Pro Part of the charm of SSL is EQing into the compressor. Would love to see you demonstrate that as well. Thanks again for your videos. Love them
I've been waiting for a video like this for years! Thank you for the in-depth run through! Many favorite records of mine have been done in Studio 3. Question: Are those mains in the wall in Studio 3, or those are just bass traps? Thanks again! Huge fan!
Warren, I love your channel, such fantastic content! It’s a TH-cam channel I just don’t get tired of watching. I especially loved this video because when I was 20 years old I did some assisting at Sunset. Always loved the sound of the rooms and the sound of those preamps, but didn’t know all of the history behind the place. Side note, you can REALLY hear the camera mans breathing on my Genelec 8350A’s. Like, loudly. Lol No hate though, thanks for creating such great content for us. 🤘🏻
Your videos are the best thing ever! Thanks for these great insights, Warren! As i saw those mic shelf i shouted so loud. :D And all those tape machines and fine stuffs just sitting around like that unused. They should send just one of those to me. And i'll be the happiest man on earth :D Please don't stop doing what you do, man!
Hi +yonatan pandelaki Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! haha yes I'll take two of everything!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Love this video, Warren. I saw a bunch of smaller mixers in Studio 2's live room at 21:48. I was wondering a few things: 1) what brand are they - they look a bit like a Mackie mixer, and 2) why don't they just patch everything into the main console through patchbays? I can't imagine that those mixers have the same quality as the main console. Thanks again for your time.
Hi Jed Wunderli the smaller Mackie Mixers are all headphone mixers! They allow every member of the band to create his own independent mix. Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Jed Wunderli yes exactly, every member of the band can adjust their mix to suit, it's a great idea and my favourite way to monitor! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi ***** Thanks for the great comments! Yes there some production suites located inside the studio complex that people use as edit rooms etc that have just Pro Tools systems. I just wanted to feature the classic Studios. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Wow, even I see Behringer stuff, the tube parametric EQ at the back stack, plus probably the 8024 DSP Digital, or the multiband 9024? If you had the option AES/EBU installed they were not bad at all, analog wise, they had a high noise floor so hiss was present. I still have a 9024 AES/EBU, last year I revised the thing. But to be honest, it's more rack space fill up. Also, I love those studios, if you see what is recorded/ mixed and mastered there, it's huge. Moreover, all the Disney stuff, mind-blowing. BTW I bought the echo chambers plugin from Sunset Sound, amazing stuff.
Thank you so much for the video! That's some quite different rooms :) Now, I've watched a few of your videos. And.. it's much about gear. Is that just a personal passion for you, or do you think that's so important for the end result?
HI GSunNo thanks for the great comment and question! I do not think recording is all about gear at all, on the contrary it's ALL about creativity and it always has been!! I love being able to show people these rooms and the equipment that was used, the simulations these days are getting so close you can borrow ideas! I hope that helps? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

Hi Warren,
Thanks so much for doing these studio interviews & tours.
Just finished reading Ray Manzarek's book! He mention Sunset Studio sessions a lot!! Nice tour!! Thanks Warren!!
Hi Gustavo Justus do Amarante Yes amazing History!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
That piano in studio 3 sounds outstanding. It actually took me by surprise.
I'm addicted to this channel!
Hi lz2k7 Wow thank you so very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Such an amazing place! The vibe in there looks incredible! 🙌🏽
The sound booth sounds great. The way the audio changed from large open space into the small booth.
Great video. Incredibly informative and fascinating tour of an iconic studio where so many of my favorite albums were produced. Thanks for this.
Hi +BostonBean99 Aw shucks thanks very much!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
That would be so cool to visit there. If those walls could talk!
All the great classic albums recorded there.
Yes, absolutely incredible!
@@Producelikeapro Hi Warren, do they have studio tours for the public? Us average no-talent hacks who love music?
I agree Warren! 'When IS the book coming out?" haha I love your channel… your love for the history of legendary recordings MIXED with the education of the recording process, all I can say is thank you for all you do! :-)
Hi +Jerome Day Haha Thanks!! Well strangely enough I am actually working on one! Haha Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Super cool. I'd love to record at a place like that one day.
Hi louderthangod Yes I hope you do!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
RIP Craig Hubler..........You where THE MAN
Wow, that is producing and outright music heaven right there hahaha.
OMG….how freakin cool….I loooove that place….also go Warren, you play piano too!!!😄
This is cool. I just found out one of my new coworkers used to work for Universal Audio, and now I’m seeing the gear. 7:15, 9:15, 9:27 are examples.
Just yesterday I watched Lee Sklar's vid of a little tour of the studio he did less than a year ago.
Oh, and RIP, Craig Hubler.
I've heard so much good stuff about those shadow hills units as one of those pieces that instantly makes anything put through it sound awesome.
IT'S HISTORY TELLS AN AWESOME STORY 💜💜💜
Wow, "Forever Changes" was done there?! That might be my all-time favorite record!
Hi +tekis0 Agreed! Amazing Album! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Why didn't they show the echo chambers? Probably the most exciting feature left of the studio. For me it certainly isn't a board from 1984! I'm captivated by the original 1962-1968 tube sound. By the way, does any one know of any solid hits made in stuidio 1? Always wondered this.
Thanks for the tour! How special!
Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
really great studio !thanks warren for the great studio tours and tips !
Hi +DONFREAKA TV Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Just to spend a day in there recording or just feeling the vibe would be awesome
nice !! i like how you play the occasional piano, most people just tour the studio and play othing ! well done ! : )
Hi +kingdizzyworld Haha thanks! I can't resist playing the beautiful pianos! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Loved seeing the mics and the studios! Thank you!!
Thanks ever so much Danny!!
RIP Craig Hubler.. We miss you!
Just did a 2 day session in studio 3 ... magical place
Agreed! I love that room!
Awesome Studio!!!! Thanks for the video!

supper cool vid, truly enjoyed the tour and the tour guid. thanks Warren.
Hi mineitellyou Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Warren Huart is awesome! I've learned a so much in two days watched these videos than I have a in along time. Thank you mate! :D
I always smile when I see the Behringer digital 32 band eq , same model i own. When someone disses my EQ for being cheap . I say its good enough for Sunset Sound and many of my friends home studio's.
Love this video warren! I was wondering what the 3 inch faders up top are controlling?
Hi acdcangusyoungmalcom I imagine they are assignable, however I think they are Aux sends to effects, Craig was saying people love using faders to send to effect as opposed to rotary pots! But I'm sure you could use them to send to headphones as well and create sub mixes. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro thanks so much for responding warren!!
Hi acdcangusyoungmalcom You're welcome!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Thank you very much for this video Warren. I quite enjoy watching these types of videos entertaining and informative . Keep up the great work .
Care to share the question?!
great video. wish I had the time to get back into this kind of stuff. always feel at home in a recording studio!
Hi ianoel yes I am truly blessed to be able to record music for a living! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Just plain fascinating, especially the rooms! And those consoles. 😳
Hi +SLAMSTERDAMN Agreed!! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
What a great video. Love seeing all those great mics that i have only read about.
Hi wardcheryldarcie Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Yes what a mic collection!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Keep going on.....thx for all you do to share this passion !!!!!!!
cool video. Thanks for the tour. Craig seems very humble for all his knowledge and experience...
HI Ralph Peebles Yes such an inspiring place!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I've started watching your interviews at different studios with increasing apreciation and interest...but this one is just fantastic.
I really think you should have given Cray way more time though.
So much history! Awesome video
Hi Adam Fudala Thanks! Yes amazing studio! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Blackbird has a great mic selection too!
Yes, it does, we’ve done tours there too
@@Producelikeapro Warren....man I wish I had the $$ to come out with my band and have a guy like you helping us!! BTW I loved the bit you did with Simon Phillips! ..My all time fave! Best to you man!!
wow...this studio looks truly amazing...
Awesome! Thanks Guys! Love the history and all the gear. Great to see and hear you guys talking in all of those great spaces.
Hi +Martin Hughes Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I also would love to see you do a video on classic EQ's / EQ points or how to use them. Like popular tricks on Pultec, Classic EQ points on Neve and API etc.
Hi +andrewssama That's a fantastic idea!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro Part of the charm of SSL is EQing into the compressor. Would love to see you demonstrate that as well. Thanks again for your videos. Love them
Hi +andrewssama Agreed 100%! Check out my hybrid mixing videos and you'll see me do that! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Thanks for this. I just noticed on my U 87 that it too says made in Western Germany. Never noticed that before.
Yes! Crazy! I remember when everything form West Germany said that!
I've been waiting for a video like this for years! Thank you for the in-depth run through! Many favorite records of mine have been done in Studio 3. Question: Are those mains in the wall in Studio 3, or those are just bass traps? Thanks again! Huge fan!
Hi Arturo Lopez Thanks very much for the great comment! Yes those are mains in the walls! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
George A was famous for doing that. I think he was the first actually (tho not sure)
Excellent video. Can't say enough, thank you for making this.
Waren I love you man! Sunset sound is my all time favorite studio and I've always wanted this kind of access! Best video on youtube!
Jordan Nims
Thanks fattkamper1 I really appreciate it! Yes Sunset Sound is a wonderful studio! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
How wonderful! I enjoyed this episode so much...thank you!
Wow! Thanks for the tour!!
Hi +Jason Ferguson Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Lol
No hate though, thanks for creating such great content for us. 🤘🏻
He seems like such a wonderful person.
I went to fantastic a party at this studio, was Warren's wedding reception.
I hope you’re well my friend! You Rock!!
Loved that! Thank you for doing that! I wished there were more people doing this. Very cool of you.
Great Vid, Do they have use free days for the unemployable???
Hi +paparamone1 you'll have to contact Craig about that!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Wow…I remember back in the day when really nice dj mixers came with Penny & Giles faders.
Very nice! Quality!
This is my favorite studio & console and I’ve never been there.
That makes much more sense than doing a sub-mix on them and sending the stereo outs into the console.
Hi +orangesugarcube Haha funny! You're too kind!
Great tour!
Hi dave brideau thanks very much! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Thank you so much for the video! That's some quite different rooms :)
Now, I've watched a few of your videos. And.. it's much about gear.
Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
wow what a console, never seen anything like that
Hi Ehsan, I know! It's an amazing console, purpose built! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
