  • What's up, people! I'm back with another Ultravox reaction, and this time we return to the Midge-fronted variant of the group (after exploring the Mini LP EP, released in '81 but featuring tunes from the John Foxx era) with the first track of the Rage in Eden album (1981), "The Voice." This is an incredible track with some tasty transitions, and wow, I had forgotten how nice Midge Ure's vocals are. So join me for a great album-opener from early '80s Ultravox. Cheers!
Also I set up a Patreon a little while back, so anyone interested in supporting what we do on this channel through donation (and getting a little bonus/behind-the-scenes content) can go here. / shnootz

Ultravox was so unique, snd Midge Ure is so underrated, especially in the U.S. He's still touring and still sounds amazing. 😍

Agreed. It's a great album. Can't wait to see his reaction to the rest of the album

You can always tell when you're getting into a song when your head starts bopping away. A great opener and a worthy entry on Ultravox - The Collection.

The head bobbing could be JG under the desk.

Native these words seem to me
    All speech directed to me
    I've heard them once before
    I know that feeling
    Stranger emotions in mind
    Changing the contours I find
    I've seen them once before
    Someone cries to me
the look and the sound of the voice
    (Oh-oh-oh-oh) they try, they try
(Oh-oh-oh-oh) the shape and the power of the voice
    (Oh-oh-oh-oh) in strong low tones
    Forceful and twisting again
    Wasting the perfect remains
    I've felt it once before
    Slipping over me
the look and the sound of the voice
    (Oh-oh-oh-oh) they try, they try
(Oh-oh-oh-oh) the shape and the power of the voice
    (Oh-oh-oh-oh) in strong low tones
    sweetly the voices decay
(Draw) draw on the lines that they say
    I'd lost it once before
    Now it cries to me
the look and the sound of the voice
    (Oh-oh-oh-oh) they try, they try
(Oh-oh-oh-oh) the shape and the power of the voice
    (Oh-oh-oh-oh) in strong low tones
the look and the power of the voice
    (Oh-oh-oh-oh) they try
(Oh-oh-oh-oh) the shape and the sound of the voice
    (Oh-oh-oh-oh) in strong low tones
the shape and the power of the voice

This is definitely in my Top5 Ultravox songs and they were the band of my teenage years. Still listen to them today.
The lyrics in this song are so interesting and it was accompanied by a great video.
This whole album is brilliant to be honest.
So glad you're back on this incarnation of the band. I'll be here until the end.

Great track from a great album. Rage in Eden is my favorite Ultravox album with Midge Ure and Systems of Romance my favorite Ultravox album with John Foxx.

Oh yes! Really epic song with a big sound! I just love the Midge Ure era of Ultravox, it definitely resonates more with my synthpop preference.
With that said, I can understand if the Foxx era is more some people's cup of tea, and to get the full picture of Ultravox as band you need to know both sides!

Well said! Keen to hear more of the Midge configuration, but at some point I'll go back and react to the earlier Foxx stuff too.

So glad you’re on to this album. Probably my favorite of both Ultravox periods. We don’t count those couple of albums from the early nineties with that other singer. Such a well constructed album and this song as an opener was a statement of purpose from a determined band

Definitely moving to the more 'familiar' Ultravox as far as the charts go.
Although he is the more popular/well known voice (pun intended) for the band I never really warmed to his vocals, apart from on "Vienna".
Not sure why, he had these odd ways of saying/singing some words. Ure was in a few bands before Ultravox some had hits and he sang in a different voice on their tracks probably the musical genre dictated that but it did me the impression Ure was kind of a hired help/session musician who suddenly had a hit record

They can't be talking about Clay Aiken. That "Voice" is one to lock far, far away.

Maybe have a listen to 'Forever and Ever' by Slik. Personally I feel it's a terrible record, but it's interesting because it shows where Midge Ure got his start. Ultravox were brilliant, the comparison to Slik is night and day.
