Shnootz - Reaction Video (Ultravox - Vienna)

  • What's up, people! I'm back with another reaction, and this time we begin going through a Greatest Hits compilation of the group Ultravox, who I understand are most famous for their '80s material (though they formed in the mid '70s, I think). And the first tune on the tracklist is "Vienna," and oh wow, is this an incredible start to the Ultravox deep-dive! Honestly, this is a remarkable tune, so let's listen and then remark upon it. Cheers!

One of the best Synth pop songs made. From Midge Ure’s piercing vocals, the multiple transitions, atmospheric sound and video to accompany it.

Iconic video by iconic director Russell Mulchahy. But it was also an incredible song.
For anyone watching this at the time it was jaw dropping and like nothing we had seen or heard before.

That was at the time of that seldom post punk 'Blitz' era that kind of matched/progressed to New romantics that progressed to mainstream Synth pop and story goes on.Quite nostalgic.I remember Simon refering to it, in a documentary explaining the story on the couple they used featured in their 'Planet earth' video doing some specific dance moves of 'Blitz dancing' and their dressing code, while revisiting early DD years.

@@NoCanDu I was glad hearing him quoting that the 'Blitz' age was of a very small period because it confirmed my memory.Cause i did remember it was very seldom of a year or so(1981) until it faded.Groups in the likes of Visage and (early) Spandau Ballet were part of it.Fortunately many of those progressed and got into the following music 'waves' and survived , avoiding to get the stigma of just being part of a passed by trend.

It’s interesting that the when first pitched to Russell Mulcahy the Australian director of ‘Vienna’, he got all caught up on the Italianate romanticism of the Adriatic Venice; when he’s mistake was pointed out the video morphed into a stylistic ‘homage’ to the film “The Third Man”! Also approximately half of the promo was shot on locations in Central and North London, mainly at Covent Garden and in the old Kilburn Gaumont theatre, while the ‘embassy’ party scene which was filmed in a house the band had rented in town; as for the actual Vienna locations, these we’re done on the cheap, shot in a day utilising a single cameraman! When ‘stitched’ together the video is tour-dé-force and (in my opinion) stands a piece of art in it’s own right

Songs to check out (on extended mixes if available): The Thin Wall, We Came to Dance, Reap the Wild Wind, One Small Day, Dancing With Tears in My Eyes and Midge Ure's solo If I Was. Great pickup. Other deep dive suggestion? Thomas Dolby; his collaboration with George Clinton, May the Cube Be With You is p-funk perfection!

Hey Matt. One of the first albums I ever bought was Vienna by Ultravox. Your reaction to this track was priceless and hysterical at the same time. Just as well you were sitting down otherwise you might have fallen over. You can imagine how I felt as a 16 year old spotty teenager listening to this for the first time. It totally blew my mind! Lead singer Midge Ure can still pull off that vocal performance more than 40 years after that recording. Incredible! Billy Currie on keyboards & violin is classically trained. He performs the violin part near the end of the title track. I mentioned before on another track Matt that if you have time have a look at the gig Ultravox did at The Roundhouse in London. You can watch it on TH-cam. It’s phenomenal! Your reaction man! Loved it! Keep up the good work. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸

Loving your recation because so much of it mirrors mine from 40 years ago when I heard it first. It still gives me goosebumps.
This incarnation of Ultravox were the first group that I really followed as a young teenager and their music has stayed with me since then. There's just so much in this track and the way it weaves through so many tonal shifts. For me the sequence where the instrumental reaches it top point and then descends down through the piano notes before slowing to blend back trimuphantly into the final vocal line is nothing short of stupendous writing. It also goes without saying that Midge Ure was one of the best vocalists around at the time (and still has an amazing voice - you should check out some of his solo stuff if you have time).
I know you're probably snowed under with music to review but I notice you really haven't progressed too far with Ultravox. Provided you are contuning then I'm a little glad of that because it gives me a chance to react to some of the later stuff in real time with you. Their next few albums are just incredible work from one of the best of the New Romantic bands.

Ultravox being the off the wall band they were when Midge joined in 1979 were going to call the album Torque Point and there are some rare early pressings of the album with that name but their management and record company after seeing the reaction to Vienna played live forced the band to see sense and call the album Vienna quite rightly in my opinion. Great rection video to a song that never made it to number one here in the UK.

one of the best songs ever!!! period! the video was so powerful it over took the interpretation of the lyrics. but in the lyrics we have no vienna the city, a murder on the stairs....none of that. it is about looking back at a toxic relationship (probably looking at pictures) and saying "i am over you!!!!"
the move from "The feeling has gone" to "The image has gone"....and the shout "it means nothing to me"....tell the whole story.

You should check out Robert Palmer's cover of Gary Numan's "I Dream Of Wires". It is from Robert Palmer's album "Clues"(1980). Robert called his friend Gary to get his permission to cover the track- and ask him to do all the synth work. The result is a mind blowing example of early electronic funk. I always think of this track when I hear "Vienna" by Ultravox. Not because they are similar in tone, but because they came out around the same time and completely changed my musical vocabulary. Robert Palmer is not a name generally associated with electronic/synth music, but it should be. His early 80's (especially Clues) is rife with it.
