The most infectious of all of their Midge Ure singles. I could listen to this over and over again. RIP Chris Cross.

Seem Midge Ure live a few years ago, he opened for the Human League. I'd seen Ultravox live back in the 80s, he was f@#%ing AWESOME this night.

Hey Matt. You were spot on with this one. It indeed is the album version (5.39) which is a bit longer than the single edit ( 4.25) I remember buying the 7 inch vinyl copy and when I took it out of the sleeve it was clear vinyl. Just about every single they released and some 12 inch singles were released in limited quantities on clear vinyl. I still have my collection. The Rage In Eden album is superb and The Thin Wall is a great track. Take it easy Matt. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸

I remembered their fifth album Rage In Eden (1981) was a second album syndrome with Midge Ure and the music had more complex and more introspective tone but compared to previous fourth album Vienna (1980), when the next sixth album Quartet (1982) the band produced with George Martin and him (George Martin) had given the band to crafted a more lighter and more softer tone than two previous album between Vienna (1980) and Rage In Eden (1981) with use a more rapid and more progressive by synthesizer and electronic machine

A lot like Thomas Dolby, Human League, Heaven 17, Simple Minds, Ultravox was another band I'd buy anything I could find. I had the 12" of this, and it may have been the same as the album cut. So good to hear this again!

I really dig this song by Ultravox. I remember the video too.

I think this is the first song by them that I heard, and it made me a fan.

I do love this one but it always felt more of a Visage track than an Ultravox one - considering both Midge and Billy were in Visage too this is not unsurprising and maybe they kept this one as Steve Strange, bless him, wasn't the greatest singer. If you ever hear the Damned Don't Cry or Night train you will see what I mean. The song seems to me to be about the Tory government of the time (but it could be any people in power) - "paper smiles" , "atmospheres of days gone by", "grey men who speak of victory", "power games a game no more and long the chance to use it" - the song describes them almost as actors in roles, "the screenplay calls a message for the nation", "they drive by night and act as if they are moved by unheard music". I'm not entirely sure what the "thin wall" is - it could be that those who are more aware know that their grip on power is tenuous and can be lost or it could mean that those who are aware of the "performance" and see through it could feel a sense of danger. I bought it at the time, the sleeve and the video have some great "Replusion" inspired imagery of hands coming through walls to grab at you.

Ultravox were "my band" at the time - I bought all their singles, this was the first one after the Vienna album. I was a stan so I loved it, but looking back I have to wonder what on James Ure's earth is going on.

The trend at the time was to make 'single edits' of longer album tracks that were released into the feeding frenzy that was the weekly Singles Chart. As one artist pointed out long ago, the albums chart was where you made your money and the singles chart was there for your ego.

Initially I had a lot of trouble deciphering the lyrics until I finally saw them in front of me on the screen in the promo video CC.

One of the better Midge Ure era Ultravox tracks. Love the synths and Ure was fitting into his role as a front man.
The backing throbbing sequencer was later used by 80s singer/composer Nik Kershaw on his hit "Dancing Girls"

At last you are getting to the synthier/sexier Ultravox. It only gets better from here. Mitch Ure, baby.

An epic track on the album. Hopefully you have the b sides Never Wanted to Begin and Paths and Angles. album worthy. Despite the length the Billy currie synth and violin solos could have expanded ala astrodyne...as for meaning, like cocteau twins, the whole made the impression...the lyrics are sufficiently vague poetry to allow for multiple dystopian possibilites...the cinematic references, the inability to make life imitate a utopian art....the conflicts between conformity that leads to oppression and individualism that leads to chaos.. the reality of public facade vs personal truth... appreciate that comment about transformational albums... vienna and rage in eden were mine and though they start slipping into more dance/synth pop production from here I followed catching glimpses and some great songs. Until their final breakup as ure focused on the band aid/live aid productions. As for Depeche...heard the early singles and would get back to them, but construction time again to hooked me in and still going

Extended version definitely not as good as the single version. The extension doesn't add substance.

Hey there. So as far as I know, this is just the "regular" album version, meaning it's not labeled as "extended" or "12""
That said, it certainly functions like an extended mix.
