Elon was UNBELIEVABLY gracious on that call. He had every right to belittle Mary and GM and rub their noses in the fact that they desperately need Tesla to even survive into the next decade, but his welcoming tone shows he's truly looking at the bigger picture and deeply cares about the long term strategy of weening the globe off fossil fuels.
He knows GM is pretty much f###ed no matter what. At best they will be significantly smaller in 5 years, and with the UAW lots of human robots and the dealerships, and management mired in the past, maybe they won't be around at all by the end of the decade. It's excellent that we will now have one charging standard for (nearly) everyone . That will accelerate the adoption of EV's and alleviate charging anxiety for many. However , until an EV owner can reliably take a road trip outside of areas of heavy concentrations of chargers, drivers will still be wary of getting an EV.

GM and Ford did this for one thing, all the other fast charger stations across the land are hit and miss, sometimes they work, sometimes its a 15-20 minutes fumbling cos of bugs or simply bad software, or out of order ect.. so they are not consistently reliable. on the other hand Tesla chargers work, only very few issues reported. so bad charging infrastructure and reliability holds electric car sales back, cos some people look at the experience and they say, well i stay with a gasoline powered car for another 5-10 years... thus going with Tesla chargers is fu.. smart. a no brainer, which many talked about for a long time, but now it looks like Ford and GM got the memo, and done the only logical move.
I love my Tesla I have no problem with the use of other companies on the Tesla supercharger as I mostly charge it home. But I was listening to this woman talk about autonomous driving. She couldn’t be more wrong! The vast majority of people who drive love to drive they don’t want a taxi without a driver in the seat. It is nice to have my Tesla drive over a long distance in auto pilot. There is no future in autonomous taxi or truck driving or anything where the loss per accident is higher than the cost possible recoup from capital. The other big thing is job loss no politician would approve autonomous trucking autonomous cars where they hear it’s gonna cost 3 to 5,000,000 jobs.

And the 50 mile range wasn’t an issue because it would shift over to gas on a longer trip. We moved to a condo so no place to charge anymore so got rid of it. And I wasn’t about to go wait in line for an hour (or longer) somewhere to charge it just to get 50 more miles. 12,000 chargers for 315,000,000 people? OMG do the math honey 😅😅😅

The public charging standard is bulky, it's prone to break, it looks ugly, hard to carry, takes up space, they can and will take up tesla charging standard.
