      Unpopular view: hundreds of billions for Ukraine actually fall into western companies, especially US defense companies. How could the defense companies in my country (a poor one) compete with America's when America's literallly swim on money? When having much money, they put more on R&D, more on salary to attract talents, more risk-taking in tech frontiers.

      I live in China and best selling cars are PHEVs. Or actually EREVs which are long range PHEVs. Most producers offers EV and PHEV in SAME PRICE!!! So stop brainwashing people that only choice is petrol or EV. The problem is car market in europe is 10 years behind china, zero innovation and zero competition. EREV category not even exist in Europe. Poor chinese people are driving better cars than middle class in Europe. Example Volkswagen ID4 cost 18k EUR in China and is considered poor people car;)

      @@steinarnielsen8954 the Chinese car market is bigger than US and Japan. In 2022 VW sold 3.18million cars in China. China is a huge chunk of the EU car makers profit. US car sales in China are plummeting at the moment, because the Chinese don’t want to buy from a US brand because why would you buy from a country that appears to hate you and wants to do you down.

      Chinese companies paired with US and EU companies to develop EVs for the Chinese market, and stole as much information as possible in the process. This is why we end up banning their crap. They build copies with terrible manufacturing practices, and we have to keep that crap out of our countries to save lives.

      Perhaps you should consider the origins and evolution of trade relations between "the West" and the nation of Japan. It needs to be pointed out that Japan was not a hostile enemy government, but rather a political/military ally.
      I would block China in every internationally legal way possible from access to free democratic markets (Australia and NZ included). Until China changes it's attitudes of international relations and domestic human rights, they should stay outside in the Cold.

They will steal any technological innovation possible, they counterfeit everything from electronics to clothing, 70% of all counterfeit goods come from China costing. US companies alone lose close to 200 Billion/yr to China counterfeits, the EU is slightly less

      @@NVRAMboi Full trade decoupling with China, even if it's not "legal" ban Chinese tech, steal, and other illegally subsidized to the point of selling them at a loss goods. China did this back in the 90's with steal and they hijacked the global production market base; if we let them do this with batteries in the coming era it'll give them a dangerous amount of influence on so many aspects of our culture. Considering China doesn't allow foreign entity's to even own corporations (not the majority anyway) we need to get our corporations out; they're just stealing technology and other knowledge.

It’s because that is the only major market in the world where the car manufacturers are actually making money on the cars. In Europe and US , they make money on the financing of the car through loans , not the actual car itself. Why do you think they push the financing so much

      As a person in the Global South, I have an impression that the whole Green Transformation stuff could be a way for developed countries (mostly western countries) to reap poor countries from affordable energies. Without energy, say goodbye to development, let alone catching up with western countries. Worse, the West may even leverage this trend by selling their expensive Green Tech such Solar Panel. The fact that China is leading in such tech was not anticipated. 😅

    I am American to be honest it's shameful for us USA 🇺🇲 and European 🇪🇺Union that they are putting 100% tariff on Affordable Chinese Hybrids and EV. They are putt7ng 100% tariff on us not China. Our automotive industry is so Overpriced that starting price is 40000$. It should be free market.

      The average transactional price of new cars sold in the US is $47K, I doubt many working class can afford that given the rampant inflation. If Americans are allowed to buy BYD EVs, it will save American people huge amount of money, especially for low income populations.

      China regulation on products/companies is half political in nature and half driven by strategic goals. They let Toyota/Honda in years ago to absorb ICE technology but they no longer care because they are the ones driving the front on EV.
      Anyone who has basic understanding of ICE vs EV knows it's drastically different. It's an obvious conclusion by looking at how Tesla is driving legacy makers out of business because legacy makers can't easily convert from ICE to EV. It's almost a totally different ball game. Amateur uneducated commenters are always acting like legacy makers can easily bridge the gap between ICE and EV. It's not that easy.
      The reality is, Chinese government wanted their own industry to be competitive so they let Tesla in. Tesla basically bankrupted some of the EV startups in China and it was designed that way to weed out the weaker players. Now the ones that survived like BYD are making very competitive vehicles. Again, here is where amateur uneducated commenters keep flowing in and trying to bash the Chinese EV the same way they bashed Toyota in 70's and Hyundai in 90's. They can't keep up with changes and just adopt a boomer mentality.

    As a European, I have no problem to buy a Chinese car if the ration price:quality is satisfying. In my opinion the tariffs are not fair. Why don’t we increase the tariffs for Tesla too?

      There are several problems considering batteries: How to get affordable parts for repairs? How to insurance EV in the future? Where to park EV?
      EV:s are subsidied, but new batteries aren't. It would be more affordable to buy a new car than change batteries. Therefore used EV:s are worthless.
      The quality of Chinese batteries insulation is poor. Batteries will burn in crashes or even when you are charging them. Unlike petrol fire, battery fire is impossible to put off and will burn everything and even wounded people inside the car. Insurance costs will be very expensive and there will be restrictions where EV:s are even allowed to drive.
      Chinese EV:s are cheap, because making them poisons environment. Using western petrol cars would be better for environment than using Chinese batteries. This is the big white elephant everyone is pretending not to see.

      Of course you always have to consider your own interests. There are a lot of tariffs between EU and USA as well. Nothing new.
      Also China is way more protective of it's own industry. Maybe we should force chinese companies to cooperate with european componies if they want to sell their goods here, like they do.

      Byd is already going ahead to build their factories in Hungary, Turkey, Morroco, Mexico and Brazil. They have already started production in their Uzbekistan and Thailand factories. Chinese battery maker CATL is already operating their plant in Germany while BYD is building theirs in Hungary.

      I find it hysterical that people think China plays fair. BYD is completely funded by the government to try a ev takeover. Glad you think that is fair. 240 Billion dollars given to BYD to start them and R&D which isn't it interesting Tesla was the only company China let in their door without a partnership. They wanted them there to steal the technology. It isn't excuses but facts.

    So hypocritical. Subsidizing VW is good, subsidizing BYD is haram. And it's funny to see these BMWs and Mercedes saying they want to sell more expensive cars to make more profit, but as soon as there are competitors, they go and complain to the government.

    Ok Chinese government subsidizes their EV manufacturers. Does USA not subsidize their EV cars? USA even subsidize Japanese cars like Toyota Prius! Back in 2021, My Prius was $24,000 and USA fed gave me $2,000 and state $500 rebate!

      those are two different things, but yes it's both called a subsidy.
      the thing how you got a discount is when a government (or another entity) wants to encourage something and offers the people money back when they do what is encouraged.
      the thing that is against trade rules and what china does is having companies sell their products on the international market for prices below the costs of making it, and then the chinese state pays those companies so those companies still make a profit. in the long term this isn't sustainable, but the idea behind it is to destroy competitors abroad and take over their market share, and once you have a monopoly you can raise the prices and you don't need those state subsidies anymore

      the only ford vehicles i see around me are ford focus type of cars, and those cost maybe 30k. so it's impossible to lose that much money on them.
      and beside i said that it's against trade rules if the state gives companies money to sell products at a loss. if a company sells stuff at a loss and the state doesn't make up the difference that's not against trade rules, that's just stupid business practice.

      @@tooltalk Export subsidies are identified when a product is sold cheaper outside the country of origin, the problem is that chinese cars are cheaper in China then anywhere else. Thats why is extremely hard to point that the reason of chinese export success is because of incentives to export
      other than that, chinese are building factories in multiple countries, so if that is the reason, EU shouldnt be worried since those advantages would disapear

      I live in China and best selling cars are PHEVs. Or actually EREVs which are long range PHEVs. Most producers offers EV and PHEV in SAME PRICE!!!       You can't do that as the competition conditions are not the same. What do you think a Chinese factory worker earns, it is of course 1 tenth of a European!! Just as there are large subsidies from China. How is it then whether wages are determined in China it is an agreement between the employees and the management. Does the factory employee have something to say here??
      Stricter requirements should have been made by the WTO in due course.
      The eropedic factories may well close and then what will they do for a living.

      Teslas are the safest cars in the world, according to crash tests in the US and Europe. They also have the best tech by far. Even the cars themselves are torn down by Chinese companies and meticulously copied. Every new innovation that Tesla does (no other company innovates much) is copied as quickly as possible by the Chinese. The only reason not to buy a Tesla is because you have some emotional, irrational feelings. Which won’t do you much good if you get into an accident and your kids die when they would have been safe in a Tesla.

    Tariffs are just excuses for protectionism. In the long run, it will erode the competitiveness of the US and EU. At the same time, the people suffer as they are the ones paying for the increased cost. A country that boasted a free market but, in actual fact, has always been doing the opposite.

      No point in pretending that China's NEV policies are anything, but protectinoism. In particular, China's practice of banning foreign EV battery competitors, forcing all EV OEMs to switch to local battery suppliers, subsidizing local overcapacity, or flooding markets abroad with export subsidies isn't particularly market-friendly either, much less free-market.

      Exactly. And sorry I work in the automotive industry for years and it's not what you say: European big automotive conglomerate overcharge their cars so much it is ridiculous. They'll blame charges and labor cost but they can still sell cheaper than the actual price. Corporate greed is huge in the automotive world. So i'm happy that China is challenging their standardized cars (since most of european brands are part of huge conglomerate and are now all similar, while chinese cars are incredibly creative in term of design and visual identity). I'm so on board with the chinese take over in the automotive world.

    I can guarantee that China is not the only country using subsidies to boost targeted industries. The Chinese just do it a lot better. Beyond that, even if everything were completely equal, China just has economies of scale and supply chain efficiencies that no country can match.

      I am from China, actually the subsidies ended in 2023, now the gov only subsidize the local customers who buy EV, not the enterprise.
      For new energy passenger vehicles with a purchase price below 150000 yuan, the subsidy amount is 10% of the purchase price.

In addition, the subsidy policy for new energy vehicles in 2024 also clarifies the subsidy targets, time frame, and application process, injecting new impetus into the new energy vehicle market. The subsidy is limited to consumers who purchase new energy passenger cars (excluding second-hand cars) during 2024. At the same time, the policy also stipulates that car buyers must obtain a unified invoice for motor vehicle sales and a motor vehicle driving license within the prescribed time, and promptly handle procedures such as obtaining a motor vehicle registration certificate and vehicle registration to ensure the standardization of the car purchase process and the rights and interests of car buyers.

    If a country can subsidize so much to an industry, and they don't have a $ printer in the basement, you want to ask, where they got the subsidizing money from ? If what ever industry they get in and they dominated it, why ? Nobody in the video talked about Chinese intelligence and hard-working culture. No one can vote them away anyways, and the only route to career is to follow orders without own thinking so in one way it's efficient...
      That means they can make long term plans too where no time is wasted on endless debating, whereas western decision-makers are much more shortsighted in their efforts to please the masses with populist policies etc.

    I’m tired of living in a country but is selling expensive crossover cars, no longer making lower and cheaper sedans, creating an artificial shortage to increase price, and delivering a lower quality product.
    Some of these Chinese evs have better mileage and tech then a Tesla but instead we protect a brand which yes is American but also isn’t innovating, actively fights against Unions, and most it’s money comes from tax payers paid subsidies. Bring in cheaper cars that are better and increase competition. Yes China killed the steel industry and that was a shame but we keep protecting Tesla, Ford, GM who consistently produce less cars, higher prices, less reliability and lower quality.

    I find it extremely funny how the video starts off by telling you that the Chinese are "changing the rules of trade" only to then tell us that they're following WTO policy when it comes to subsidies. Maybe companies like Tesla, BMW, Stellantis and Ford should have been investing their money in vertical integration and productivity instead of doing share buybacks and divends for investors.     As far as I can tell, these tariffs only have a negative impact on the consumer. It seems like a big barrier to lower income households going electric, EV's are still out of the price range for most middle class families. If the cars can pass the local safety laws and are affordable, I think you should just let capitalism take effect. European automakers will have to be more competitive and make an EV that people both want and can afford.

Most European auto makers has their own factories in China and other parts of Asia, they can definitely match the prices of other Chinese brands if their products are up to par.       EU and US manufacturers have been pushed for EVs for over a decade. They manufacturers did nothing and bet on the future of the automitve industry is ICE engines. So they were hit with an ICE ban hammer. That made them wake up, too late, but they have finally woken up. Now, if we are lucky, after the inevitable bloodbath is over, there will be a handful of EU automakers left that are capable of competing. What's really funny about all of this is that the US car makers still seem to be chugging along in near complete oblivion of what is happening in China.

      The average shouldn't want tariffs. tariffs mean the importer has to pay double (with 100% tariff) and passes this cost along to the customer which will mean the customer ends up the loser. Tariffs are taxes for the consumer, not the supplier.

    Every country in the world subsidizes or incentivizes their companies, one way or another. China didn't 'change the rules' of trade as this Filipe Munoz said alleged at 0:50, China simply started exporting cars, and the so-called 'rules' is actually this: "Hey you are not supposed to be exporting the things that we Europeans export".

    So its never about Climate but always about company profits. Europe does not provide affordable alternatives to its consumers as more than 60% of these consumers can't afford the expensive EVs being produced in the EU. No affordable Chinese EVs mean you are excluding 60 to 70% of EU consumer needs to please a few greedy manufacturers who see more profits in the expensive segment.

    Tarrif for Chinese made solar panels started when China was still importing silicone and machinery to make the panels 15 years ago. Now, the Chinese has over 80% of the market share for solar panels and also has the complete supply chain, and the lead in solar technologies. The ev industry is further along than their solar industry when Tarrif started.
